I got 1 critique for DOOM 2016 and 1 more for ETERNAL: DOOM 2016 relied WAAAAY too much on 'move to arena, monsters spawn, arena locks, kill monsters, arena unlocks, proceed 5 steps, repeat'. ETERNAL does look overall slower mobility wise, like a good 10-20%, to make sure Dashing doesn't completely break the game. However, eternal looks to have alot less locked-down arenas, which is a massive plus for me.

Thanos changing plans in Endgame seemed to be due to him witnessing the effects of the snap on Earth through Nebula. Seeing Earth fall into despair over the loss of half the population made him realize it wouldn't achieve his goal proper, so he took the next logical step in his mind, recreating the universe, so no one would know what was lost. He explains this just before the fight with Cap, Thor and Iron Man
@19Ledor5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but it’s less interesting than Thanos in Infinity War. In Infinity War Thanos believes that what he is doing is the only way to save everyone from his planets fate. They won’t understand, they won’t like it, they will hate him for it and eventually kill him because of it but in his mind he was right and with time what he did will have saved the future. Now many people have explained why killing half of all life wouldn’t actually save everyone best one I have seen was from AlternateHistoryChannel who explained the post snap world would look far worse than what we see in Endgame. But the way Thanos believes in what he is doing and acts on that conviction gives his character an almost irresistible charisma, that has made him one of most beloved villains in a very short time. Thanos in Endgame is your typical evil Tyrant that wants to destroy the world so he can create a better one. Now this would actually work but it is far less interesting than what we had in Infinity War. We went from a great narrative antagonist to a purely mechanical one. It’s like if you had a five star meal and for desert you get a 99 cent pudding from the supermarket. Now normally I don’t mind that little pudding but when just had a masterfully cooked dinner I was kind of in for something better. So, yeah. It is in the film why Thanos switched up his plan. It makes sense why he would switch up his plan. And it is kinda disappointing that he switched up his plan.
@lampad45494 жыл бұрын
@@19Ledor thanos endgame i think has the same charm while showing that how much of tyrant he is, one cool part about him is when he saw himself die he didn't flinch, him changing his goal i wouldn't say its disappointing as it is a form of character development. He was ruthless tyrant in the first film itself you kinda have to be to have that kind of goal and plus it builds upon the theme of how his arrival and destruction is inevitable. And his plan in endgame works much better than the one is infinite war.
@thesenate40704 жыл бұрын
I’m pretty sure he saw people suffer when he did this on a planetary scale. He knows people won’t be happy about this at first. That’s why he’s the only one who has the WILL to do it. If people agreed “yeah it’s a good idea” he would’ve faced less resistance. His character is that he believes he’s the only one who understands what MUST be done. That doesn’t get erased because “some people said I was mean though”

Lemme tell you a little story about a man named The Critical Drinker He was a hard drinking son of a preacher, always at the bar Lager from the tap or shots of Paddy from the shelf He could open his throttle and throw back a bottle as quick as the devil himself Word got around that The Drinker was no pretender, From Clare to here they'd lock up the beer when Drinker went on a bender Down at Dickey Mack's, the Rising Sun, or at the Swan If he was drinking at seven by ten to eleven well all the booze would be gone! Even if you saw it yourself, you wouldn't believe, And I wouldn't trust a person like me, if I were you I wasn't there, I swear I have an alibi I heard it from a man who knows a fella who says it's true! It was nine in the morning on a cold rainy night, Drinker rolled into the Castle Bar, looking to get tight He had money in his pocket, he had whiskey in his eye, He said: Get up off your asses and set up the glasses, I'm drinking this place dry! Now all the serious boozers, they were soon broken hearted When Drinker finished off six and he was only getting started Guzzling down the pints, knockin' em back like candy, He was lookin' alright to be drinkin' all night, then Nora brought out the Brandy Even if you saw it yourself, you wouldn't believe, And I wouldn't trust a person like me, if I were you I wasn't there, I swear I have an alibi I heard it from a man who knows a fella who says it's true! Drinker drank the whole damn bottle, had another pint or two, When it made no impression he started his session with Murphy's Millenium Brew He was waiting for a pint when his face turned green Jesus, Drinker fell down after only fifteen! You could have heard a pin drop, then the crowd let out a roar It took five Cork women to lift Drinker off the floor! The doctor looked him over and said you better call the hearse: but it's not what you're thinkin' it wasn't the drinkin' this man died of thirst Even if you saw it yourself, you wouldn't believe, And I wouldn't trust a person like me, if I were you I wasn't there, I swear I have an alibi I heard it from a man who knows a fella who says it's true!

In regards to Critical Drinker's assertion (around the 5:15:00 mark or so), Yeah, you can totally have a mentor character that also goes through a lite version of the hero's journey. I can think of two possible premises (in a generalized sense) right off the top of my head. 1. The mentor's knowledge base is incomplete. He may have gone through a journey of his own in the past, but by the end of it he doesn't attain true mastery. He doesn't fully reconcile the lessons he learned, or his journey itself was flawed in some way that in turn leaves his knowledge base flawed. His second journey alongside the protagonist allows him to truly complete his knowledge base, whether from the protagonist himself or the unique journey he follows along in. Example: An assassin whose journey was one of revenge serves as a mentor to the protagonist later in his life. He can act as a flawed mentor to the protagonist, joining his cause and passing on his skills while at the same time this new journey alongside the protagonist teaches him valuable life lessons that he either didn't learn or didn't grasp when he was younger. 2. The mentor's point of view is disconnected from reality in some way. He may have become jaded sometime after his journey, or he may not have had a journey in the first place and instead developed his mastery purely on an academic level. This type of mentor would be able to pass on his flawed perspective, but through his experiences with the protagonist he learns to reconnect himself with the world or reconcile his studies with the world around him. Example 1: A trainee in the mystic arts achieves incredible mastery in a short time, typically a full hero's journey. However, as he he grows older, the responsibilities of adulthood weigh on him and one or more serious mistakes cause him to break down until the protagonist arrives. Though initially lukewarm towards the protagonist, he gradually regains his vigor and learns to reconcile his mistakes to return to his former self. Example 2: An extremely well studied professor joins the protagonist on his journey. Through his role in the protagonist's story, he works to reconcile his academic knowledge with the real world, learning what it really means to be a hero in the process. All of these are, as far as I can tell, sound methods to creating a character who is both a mentor and goes through a hero's journey at the same time. They seem to be a very rare breed of character due to how difficult they are to write and how niche that they are as a concept. In theory, the easiest way to write a mentor's hero journey is to have some sort of prequel story that is itself a hero's journey for the later mentor figure and explores how they came to be a flawed mentor as they are now. However, this is at odds with the standard hero's journey formula. Typically the story is about the protagonist's hero journey and the mentor serves as a wise sage character, with the protagonist experiencing a complete journey and becoming a similarly capable mentor in the process who would presumably act as the mentor figure for a new hero in the future. The easiest way to write a hero's journey arc for a mentor would be to bring in a flawed hero from a previous story, and have them act as the mentor for a new protagonist in a sequel. Ironically, this is what Luke's "arc" in The Last Jedi was supposed to be, though it was undercut by incomplete or outright contradictory world-building in Rian's execution. If the world-building for Luke's mistakes and Ben's fall to the dark side were established (read: present for more than 10 seconds of flashbacks) within the movie, this concept could have worked. Instead, Rian's hack writing ended up destroying this concept in its execution.

Overall, a great episode. I wish Drinker was a little clearer about his points though. The stuff around 5:20:00 seems like he's talking about one thing, while the rest of the crew are on about something else. Edit: Jay is in Lemington Spa? Bruh, that's pretty close to me.

The only thing I don't like about Doom Eternal is the gawd awful, neon green HUD. Change that to a subtle transparent blue and it'll be perfect.
@ABonafideSkeleton5 жыл бұрын
I'm honestly okay with the HUD colour in Doom Eternal, I don't think it's nearly as bad as everyone says it is. I'm just glad that we're getting environments that aren't blindingly red.

Eddie T yeah the first HUD they showed at Quakecon was so slick and basic. Very appealing design. This new one just looks overwhelming and distracting. They still have time to change it.

Regarding the mentor part, I'm surprised Mauler didn't mention One Punch Man. Saitama plays the role of a mentor to Genos, even though he is himself a main character. Granted, this is more of a character having "becoming a mentor" as part of his hero's journey, but that's still a good example of a character in a mentor role who still don't have their shit completely figured out yet and plays the mentor to someone else. Don't forget, Saitama actually teaches Genos stuff (even outside of the comedic stuff), and more importantly, so did Genos.
@DiZtheJedi4 жыл бұрын
What's crazy about the Thor V Luke portion of this is that the MCU actually did the "parental figure stops child figure by extreme measure" thing first, and they did it better: Odin put Hela in a hell-dimension because she *did* go dark side. So yeah... take that, TLJ.

The doom response was needlessly contrarian. XD Doom guy is more buffed up, and they did add neon yellow poles for advanced movement that they decided DOOM needed for..... reasons. Also, they probably thought the players were too stupid to realize that a pole was jutting out of a pillar, so they had to make it that bright yellow.

I hope you three and anyone who happens to read this has a fantastic week! Glory to the Toxic Brood!!
@alexhayden2195 жыл бұрын
Part of why Luke's arc doesn't work isn't because he's supposed to be mentor learning something. It's because he's an absolutely terrible mentor that doesn't teach anything worth learning and any lessons he may possibly have learned in the end are lessons that he already learned. One of the guys said that it's almost like he is portrayed like he was in A New Hope and that's also true of what it is that he's learning. I hate this argument that the lack of world building is TFA's fault. Yes, TFA was bad at it, but it just left it possible for TLJ to do almost anything and it instead did even less. TLJ had to be a sensible follow up to TFA and could do anything after that and also did not at all need to take place entirely in the next two days after TFA. The entire movie was a failure on all counts because it didn't do anything itself, and also didn't do anything to build on the little bit that TFA did set up. There's so much wrong with the two movies and after TLJ, Rey is just an awful character (as is everyone else), but I want to like her so much. I really do. She looks cool, has some cool initial setup, I don't personally think Daisy is awful (though could probably be directed better), and I just want to love the main character in (current) Star Wars. TFA did an awful job setting things up, but it was vague enough that I think there was potential for TLJ could build and fix things and just make things fun and relatable, but she and the rest of the story are now pretty near irredeemable. Especially because they have one more try to get it right and it's being made by the same people. It's not like it's just the second episode in a tv series that could have 20 episodes to just ignore and fix things. People seem onboard to move away from the Skywalkers and that could have been okay. Either respect the OT cast and bring them back to have scenes together and have cinematic magic again, or just have it unrelated to them. This may sound dumb to some people, but I loved her intro scenes, her setup as a lonely scavenger, her speeder is cool, and I think it would have been cool to have, like... I'm not saying copy the story 1-for-1, but basically make One Crazy Summer, but not as a comedy, in space starring Rey as a lonely loser scavenger mechanic that makes some friends along the way helping someone out and entering a big race with her speeder to save someone's moisture farm or whatever. Or, just any John Cusack 80s movie remade as a mostly serious Star Wars GFFA set movie with Rey and her speeder in the lead role. Or just give us the JJ/RJ garbage.

Fun fact, there is not a single MCU film that takes place in the year of 2017 cause Guardians 2 is two months after the first, Black Panther is a week at least after Civil War, Homecoming is a few months after Civil War, and Ragnarok is days before Infinity War AKA Spring 2018
@eidolon14265 жыл бұрын
I'm going to plant my feet in the ground and disagree here more than I ever have with you guys before. And I know that all four of you weren't unanimous on this but hear me out. Thanos in Infinity War and Thanos in Endgame are literally two *different,* and *separate,* characters. Not just by a "oh, one is stronger than the other." or "oh, they act a bit differently." margin, but by a distinct, scientific margin. Endgame Thanos is a "time clone." He is from a different timeline reacting to events being altered FROM his original timeline. He is experiencing entirely *different* scenarios from what Infinity War Thanos did. By actual science and logic, they are no more similar than identical twins. If one of them murdered your dog, then you would NOT feel the same satisfaction getting revenge on the twin who didn't do it. By definition they are out-right two different characters, and THIS is one of the strongest reasons why many people (myself included) heavily disliked Endgame Thanos. On top of that, we also have Endgame Thanos having exactly *NONE* of the sympathetic attributes of Infinity War Thanos. Endgame Thanos is just a copy-pasted Saturday cartoon villain, after Infinity War Thanos was the BEST, or at least second best, villain in the entire MCU... it's basically comparing the OG Star Wars Battlefront 2 and the EA Battlefront 2... They may share like five things in common, but it's kind of distasteful to even suggest that they are similar to each other...

I don't really mind the wall-climbing and pole-swinging. All games have to crank up the possibilities, you see that especially well in the Tomb Raider Games, they even redid the first one and named it "Tomb Raider Anniversary" and the options were way updated since the first one didn't even let you crouch. When its done right in Doom Eternal, it can amount to way cooler kills and a more creative fighting style.

The first "Kung fu panda" had master Shifu teaching his young apprentice Po how to be a good warrior, while taking the mantle of Oogway as the leader of The Jade Palace and reaching inner peace during his lessons with Po, and becoming more like his younger self before Tai Lung attacked their town (becoming more casual, having good time with his students and not just training them). It's hard to do because there was another another master in this formula, but it's possible. Sorry that I'm about 2 years too late

A really simple way of getting Luke to be more reclusive and not join the battle against The First Order is to combine Critical Drinker's (Shad's?) idea of Luke recognizing Snoke using the Dark Side to influence his mind with him voicing a stance similar to Yoda's in Empire. Luke could recognise that Snoke has a different power/approach than Palpatine and rushing headlong into danger, even if his loved ones are at risk, would be incredibly foolish and thus he's resigned himself having to let people he loves die in order to be able to gain the knowledge necessary to be able to stand against this new powerful threat. It would make for an interesting clash against Rey's youthful, and more than a little naive, gungho attitude.
@papershadow5 жыл бұрын
It also would have been a way to invert Luke's failure last time he was confronted with this scenario in Empire and specifically call out that failure and what he learned from it, as is the supposed "theme" of the story. The issue here is that requires Luke to still be the same character at his core despite the dour/cynical perspective, and I guess that wasn't subversive enough for Johnson.

Now I finally understand the pole memes, thanks.
@LieutenantSilver5 жыл бұрын
I figure the reason why Rian Johnson needed to show _Jake_ hunting and milking was part of his subversion nonsense. Fans didn't wonder how _Luke_ lived but what he was doing on the island, speculating about its connection to the Force or relevance for the Jedi. Therefore Roundhead psych'd it: _nope, Jake's routine is entirely mundane, detached from the galaxy and pointless to the primary conflict. Because Your Star Wars Theory Sucks._

The only way to turn off invasions in dark souls was not to be human/embered which meant you had less health or play offline which meant you couldnt co-op levels/bosses. Invasions were the biggest selling point of dark souls so having a way to turn that off specifically would have been silly but the punishment of losing summons or health to balance that is fine. Way of blue from dark souls 2 and 3 didnt turn off invasions it just summoned a friendly blue invader to help you fight the red invader(s).
@Leotheleprachaun5 жыл бұрын
If you are in The Way of Blue you should play offline. Unless it's your first time, then you get a pass. Blues from both covenants that help WoB members are hated more than bad internet connections. Hell, I'd rather deal with a Finger and a Mad Spirit at the same time than a single tryhard blue.

Well, if we're looking for a mentor character who is competent yet still learn from their students there are several ways to do this. One example, and I know this is silly, is Shifu from Kung-fu Panda. It's crazy that Kung-Fu Panda is a better film that an star wars movie.
