The Red Wedding v Snoke/Luke’s deaths: Rob Starks death is not a valid comparison to Snoke or Luke’s death as an argument that ‘people can handle subversions’. Why? Rob starks death didn’t just come out of left field. In the books AND in the show, there are several chapters/scenes where Rob Starks allies are ending their alliance with him, questioning his leadership or brooding over his decisions Setup: The Freys It begins season 1 when Rob stark agrees to marry Lord Walders daughter and robs mother specifically warns him not to cross Walder Frey (also Walder Frey is never perceived as a loyal ally or friend, he’s a vile and brunt man so his betrayal was within reach as a plot development without being made obvious) Examples: Walder Frey is first introduced in the show and the books by agreeing to speak to Catelyn stark, who offers to go in place of Rob because they don’t trust Walder, so there is already a seed of doubt about his loyalty straight away. it adds to this by making him a dishonourable man too, he sleeps with his daughters and more or less says he has no interest in fighting the Lannister’s or honouring the starks because they never bother with him and he knows they don’t respect him. He only agrees to an allegiance because Rob promises to marry one of Walders daughters. This is in the book and the show. When Rob marries another woman and breaks his promise, they agree to a new allegiance BUT it doesn’t follow the typical ‘good guys’ story where the hero makes a mistake and then they are forgiven for it even though they broke their promise...the subversion doesn’t come from rob dying, it comes from the fact that Walder Frey’s character was consistent to the writing and kills rob like catelyn warned. The writer followed through with what was established and didn’t give in to the audiences wish to see the good guy win. That was the subversion, and the reason it works is because the audience didn’t feel cheated, they were warned (like rob) that this might happen. Same for The Bolton’s: In the books, rob also speaks of lord Bolton and how he is afraid of him, he’s consistently portrayed as a dark, cold, smart and sinister man and thus his betrayal is within reach in regards to character. (It’s also heavily suggested he will betray rob when Jamie Lannister has dinner with him) The show also (like Walder Frey’s character) establishes that Roose Bolton may not be trust worthy throughout the books and the show examples: Lord Bolton is constantly giving Rob advice and Rob is constantly rejecting it, he specifically states this after the red wedding as one of the reasons for his betrayal. There is also another scene where lord Bolton is conversing with another lord about the war and how Rob Stark is losing respect of his men, further establishing a potential betrayal. Again, like Walder Freys betrayal it was established and had reason. Luke and Snokes deaths had no setup, and whilst you could argue that they don’t need any, there was no real purpose to them either. Snoke dying should either setup a sith and a Jedi alliance (which would be a genuine subversion because the whole of the last Jedi was building up Rey and Kylo Ren and the audience expected kylo to betray her) or give leeway for Kylo to become the lead villian...but Kylo has not been consistently portrayed as threatening (I mean Rey has beaten him once, he was nearly killed by one of snokes guards and Luke out smarted him) so snokes death ended up being meaningless and instead severed a plot development for episode 9 and came across as a subversion that was done for the sake of subversion. Saying that snokes death was justified because he’s a surface level character is a weak argument, why?...Because Thanos. Thanos and Snoke: No one cared about Thanos during his appearances in movies like ‘Guardians of the galaxy’. He’s just a ‘big purple man’ sitting on a throne in space who’s not too dissimilar from any of the other villains in the marvel cinematic universe...but put him in the hands of good writers for infinity war, and he becomes one of the most epic and well developed villains of any blockbuster. If Thanos was killed off midway through infinity war and replaced with someone like Ronan that would not be satisfying because the story has been building up Thanos’s presence and Subverting that by ending his character early would invalidate all the work of building up his character over the several movies he’s been a part of. The audience wanted to know who he is and what he’s going to do, and they got exactly what they wanted. As for Luke Skywalkers death, his death too seemed underwhelming, because of the way it was written. Sacrificing himself to save others is a fitting end, but having him project himself on the other side of the galaxy to then disappear alone on another planet seems odd and Unfulfilling. The reason the subversions didn’t work in The Last Jedi is because they were not planned and thus left no interesting developments going into Episode 9.

I have been a Star Trek fan my whole life, I have no problem with political issues in Trek but the whole point was that the Federation showed humanity had moved beyond the issues of today. The crew of the Enterprise showed how humanity had moved beyond things like racism and sexism and created a better future. I don’t want a dystopian Federation, we have enough dystopian sci fi. I want to see a hopeful, optimistic vision of the future, not a reaction to the creators’ vision of modern day problems.

Nick Poeschek I think that is naive. A utopia once attained still needs work from its population to be maintained. Jean-Luc Picard retains the memories and principles of the Federation when it was a better society, so hopefully, the new series will start with the rot having set in and a retired Picard noticing that society has shifted towards the negative without him being aware of it and that, for a change in _Trek,_ the enemies are within, rather than without. It isn't completely unprecedented either. We had episodes with Section 31 such as when they infected Odo so he would make the Changelings very ill: memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Morphogenic_virus We had the high command taken over by parasites: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conspiracy_(Star_Trek:_The_Next_Generation) However, I completely agree with you that if your concern is that _Picard_ will be a ham fisted metaphor for repressive anti-immigration policies in a US Election year because cast and crew hate Trump then that will date the series to contemporary politics and frustrate their escapist qualities. Provided these themes are deep buried and not messages that are voiced in monologues by the cast, like in the recent _Doctor Who_ series, that won't be so bad, and other positive qualities of the series could be enough to redeem it. My personal concern is that they have brought out the original Enterprise cast, and Jeri Ryan, just for the first few episodes and only intended to have them in it so they would be seen in the trailers. I've seen a new ship with a new crew that Picard is going onto without sign of the original cast, who have seemingly just been used for a bait-and-switch to sell subscriptions. Unless, the story is really compelling this won't work and will be _The Force Awakens_ all over again, although I doubt they will kill Riker, Troi and Seven in the first three episodes.

Uncompetative I think that’s fair, I just hope that it’s not too heavy handed. One of the things I liked about how they handled things DS9 was that they weren’t fighting cartoon villains. Sisko and Garek forging information and then blowing up the Romulan politician’s ship was clearly unethical, but also potentially saved the lives of billions. I think you could make good arguments that Sisko and Garek were right or wrong to do what they did. I could see the Federation having to compromise their principles in the face of existential threat. I just hope it’s not lazily done and the compromise of ethics makes sense.

Nick Poeschek Forget what I said. I didn't realise it was set in the Kelvin Timeline subsequent to the events of J.J.Abrams' _Star Trek_ (2009). As I feel J.J.Abrams ruined _Star Wars_ with _The Force Awakens_ and _The Rise of Skywalker_ (e.g. showing Leia to be an incompetent General for not evacuating D'Qar, having Han be a neglectful father and bad husband that reverts all character progression gained in the Original Trilogy to go back to being a double-dealing smuggler and foolishly get himself killed by allowing Leia to nag him into reasoning with his clearly irredeemable mass murdering son, having C-3PO disrespect the Original Trilogy cast by saying that he wants to take one last look at my friends before they kill him by wiping his memory to unlock information he only has in his memory as they lost the dagger holding the inscription when Chewie was captured by the Knights of Ren without a sound of protest or a fight - then his tendency to not have new characters either follow the Hero's Journey by being trained before they are shown to have mastered their abilities, or to fit the _Jason Bourne_ arc where they effectively have amnesia but can do amazingly skilled stuff because they never forgot how to fight, operate vehicles in hectic chase circumstances, etc. and they eventually recall and we the audience see flashbacks of their former training which explains their extraordinary capabilities completely by the end of their trilogy, where it could have been revealed that Rey was a Skywalker unbeknownst to her father Luke as he had sent her mother Mara Jade away from an impending battle for her own protection without her telling him she was pregnant with their child, then not have him sense that Rey was his daughter when he met her on Ahch-To through his familial Force Bond as he had cut himself off from the Force; or by rendering Anakin's redemptive character arc that had developed across six episodes utterly meaningless by changing it so that he failed to kill Emperor Palpatine which directly contributed to him cloning Snoke, creating the First and Final Order and the victory of the Battle of Endor which had been so celebrated at the end of _Return of the Jedi_ being so short lived that all the Original Trilogy cast found themselves fighting a star wars they had already comprehensively won once as Disney weren't prepared to use the mystical epilogue that they had purchased from George Lucas that provided original story treatments for his envisioned Sequel Trilogy) and made life difficult for Rian Johnson (by having it so that Luke was stranded on the island keen to be picked up by the Millennium Falcon so he could return to comfort his sister who he would have sensed was grieving the death of Han, but was instead making his rare visitor - who he must have heard fly in - climb the 600 or so steps carved into the island to speak with him, all so it could end in a wordless scene and an "epic" helicopter shot, rather than say... leave the destruction of Starkiller Base and the introduction of Chewie and Han until _Episode IX_ so that _Episode VII_ could be used to show us how the New Republic was a thing, and Ben became Kylo without Luke acting completely out of character and attempt nepotism, and when Starkiller Base made its surprise annihilation of the Hosnian system, then have it be that Leia formed the Resistance in response to the new threat to the galaxy that was revealed to be the First Order), and ruined _Star Trek_ and _Spider-Man_ and is set to now ruin _Superman_ I've had to construct my own head canon and pretend everything he was involved with never happened, with the exception of _Mission: Impossible III_ even though its premise is that the baddies can put bombs in people's noses. So, it won't be that I won't watch _Picard_ for its ham fisted attempts to resonate and run commentary on contemporary America politics, but because J.J.Abrams is a hack and this recognises the events of his _Star Trek_ (2009) movie which imploded Romulus AND Vulcan by having them pulled into singularities, whilst allowing his antagonist to emerge from a singularity and change history, consequently disrespecting and decanonising much of established _Star Trek_ from the original Prime Timeline. Consequently, I disregard this new _Star Trek_ alternate history as it is incompatible with the stories I like, just as I disregard his new characters and undermining of the achievement of the Rebellion in his _Star Wars_ Sequel Trilogy, and will boycott his upcoming _Superman_ movie.

With regards to the misdirection thing. The misdirection is that literally everyone assumed Kylo would get redeemed and a part of why that is is he has someone to rebel against, Snoke. Just like Vader could defy the Emperor, and Hux defied Kylo, so long as there was someone over Kylo, there was someone where the buck stops and someone Kylo could use to redeem himself. But Snoke dies in part 2. So where does that leave Kylo? Hes going into part 3 the top dog, completely in charge, about as redeemable as Palatine. So Kylo being redeemed seemed to be out the window. The future became unknown and exciting.

Also, the girl in the video with the vapid voice was just pulling stuff about the Red Wedding out of her ass. There was no trope that Robb Stark was invincible. Throughout the book series, his doom was foreshadowed. In the book before the Red Wedding, two different people had dreams or visions of the event. In the chapters in the same book leading up to the Wedding, the PoV character is constantly depressed and worried and it's raining in every chapter. If there are tropes, we get him coming up with a brilliant plan to defeat their enemies and save their homeland, which they are going to carry out right after the Wedding, and everyone knows that successful plans are only explained while they are being carried out, or after the fact. Great ideas revealed ahead of time are never pulled off. So we knew he'd never get to carry out this brilliant strategy. Hell, the venue of the Wedding was two identical castles at either end of a bridge and the whole complex was formally know as The Crossing. A DOUBLE CROSSING! The guy who carried out the Red Wedding is Lord of the Double Cross. WTF Jenny?

Hahaha! Just out of curiousity while they were talking I looked up how many crewed the Death Star... a space station the size of a small moon... the total was set to 265,675. (See Edit Below) The Supremacy has over 8x as many people on board than the Supremacy while being only a marginal fraction of the size... TLJ is sooo stupid. EDIT: Whoops! I'm the stupid one! It had a crew of 265,675, but apparently that doesn't count gunners, pilots, support crew, etc. So the real number is 1,148,309 total people (with 400,000 droids or so). So the supremacy as slightly under 2x as many people on board while being only a marginal fraction of the size. Still stupid, but less so than initially estimated.

Snoke should have been Plageuis. It's a bit on the nose, but it would have easily worked and made it easy to wrap the story around that and bring everything together. I know people said they shouldn't do that because it's too obvious. HOWEVER it's impossible that would have been worse than bringing Palpatine back from the dead, rendering Snoke a non-entity, destroying episode 7 and 8 in the process because it was never indicated at all that Snoke was a puppet (and it was obviously not planned). The Knights of Ren went ENTIRELY unaddressed, and even Jenny says in her reaction video "they may as well not have existed in the first place" and it's like yeah, apply that to Snoke. He's meaningless. The First Order is meaningless. The entire sequel trilogy is meaningless. I do like the prequels a lot. I think they're much better than people give them credit for and even you guys miss some stuff in your discussion on it (but thank you for at least acknowledging that the sequels are objectively worse). The prequels have a world that makes sense and the characters belong in the world even if the acting is stiff as hell most of the time and some elements are painfully under or overutilized. The sequels do not make sense and every piece of confusion I had after episode 7 carried through to the end of the trilogy. I felt nothing after episode 9, JJ. I was empty. Thank you Kathleen and Rian and JJ. You massacred my favorite franchise.

What if we had this as a Sequel trilogy idea. Let's get rid of Snoke completely, maybe even get rid of the part where Kylo is Han and Leia's son and just have him be a detached character from any known lineage. The first movie could have had scenes of General Hux organizing First Order fleets (competently) after a single teaser-like scene of him discussing the ultimate goals and obstacles of the First Order with Kylo Ren. The main villain of this movie would be Captain Phasma, as she would be organizing and leading the troop movements on planet-side operations. A lot of characterization would be given to Phasma and Finn, with Phasma being the center of attention if we were to keep that village scene from the beginning of TFA instead of Kylo. The final battle (and ultimate emphasis of the series) is our group of main characters taking her on in a fight where she gets to mostly dominate (inspired by that edit at the beginning of this stream). Finn would be the one to deal the killing blow, but we don't need any attention drawn to it such as a one-liner, I think it would be better as a detail for the audience to notice between the films that characters kill the villains associated with them. The second movie would be focused on Hux, with several battles of Poe having a back-and-forth with his leadership about how to deal with Hux and his fleet, especially because of his perfected strategies that seem to almost come from foresight. Either have Poe's fighter attack or suggested strategy deal the killing blow against Hux's flagship, killing him. Long story short, the third film would involve Rey fighting Kylo, obviously if we were to really dig into and explore the potential directions for this hypothetical trilogy they would have a lot more development to these confrontations, but these are the envisioned endpoints.

Yes, it was a hologram, but it still showed enough of his features for us to have an idea. In TLJ, he is shown way closer to a human figure. In fact, he seems just like a deformed "old white man." I think what J.J. and Rian did was they took the crew compliment of a modern warship like an aircraft carrier, then figured out how much bigger their super warships are, and increased the crew compliment by that percentage, perhaps fudging the numbers up a little in their favor, just to seem that much more impressive.

Standard Imperial Star Destroyers have a crew of around 30,000. The Resurgence class battlecruiser has a crew of 50,000 and a Executor class Dreadnaught around 200,000. It is possible those ships have far more automation and can operate with less, but considering the amount of droids and computers that exist in the universe it's surprising they need so many personnel. Maybe the Emperor is opposed to trusting a lot of droids after the clone wars.

i mean to be fair. 2 billion clones for the entire galactic conflict is not even that much, those are numbers that scale across A LOT of star sistems. But thats combining fleet+land troops+shock troops+spec etc all divisions combined. first order + palpatine's fleet ridiculous numbers come from their fleet numbers. to put in normal numbers. the ENTIRE US army is made from totally roughly 2 million people, but only aprox 450 ships(which is a fucking lot btw). Palpatine's fleet was WAY WAY WAY TOO BIG, they would have to abduct entire star systems to fully operate that many ships holy shit.

The Xyston Class Star Destroyer (the ones with the Death Star Cannons) has a crew of only 29,500 men despite being a much more massive 2,400 meters in length. The Final Order's fleet of Star Destroyers doesn't have any official numbers associated with it beyond a vague "hundreds" comment when refering to the number of capital ships so the lower end of the estimate for crew compliment numbers around 5,900,000 men. But since this fleet would increase the First Order's strength by a thousand fold, we can probably assume the number is much higher than that when it comes to fleet size. Note, this doesn't include the compliment of Storm Troopers or pilots the Star Destroyers would obviously carry with them who could easily number well past 9,000 for the troopers and in the hundreds for the pilots per individual ship.

Imperial Star Destroyers have a normal crew of 37 Thousand. "minimum" crew is 5 thousand. those are crew, not stromtroopers. i mean, Rise of Skywalker could have solved the problem by having them all be Droid controled ships (thus the blow up the master ship and they all derp, and explaining where palpy got the crews). but it's easy to "fix" (make better) Disney Star wars films, all it takes is giving a little shit and not being the people who are running lucasfilm.
