In today's video, we go through a series of effective home exercises to prevent falls. Balance exercises for seniors are incredibly important for fall prevention. Falls are the leading cause of injuries in people over the age of 65. We start to lose muscle already at the age of 30 so continuing to challenge our muscles as we age is crucial to preventing falls. In today's class, I put my dad through a series of exercises to work on strengthening the leg muscles and give him balance exercises to challenge and work on his balance. Please have a chair beside or in front of you for safety as you do the exercises.
Exercises in today's video:
1. One leg stand/leg curl
2. Weight shift
3. Flamingo
4. Walk the line
5. Single leg stance
6. Side leg raises
7. Back leg raises
8. Knee raises
9. Squats/sit to stands
10. Calf raises
11. Step over

Wishing you improved health!

These are the best balance videos on You Tube.. Also, I have a stenosis and my balance has got worse quite quickly. Can these exercises make your balance worse at first and then does it gradually improve. Thanks.

Hi Helen, thank you for your comment. Depending on the individual's current balance, the exercises could be quite challenging but as I always say, everyone needs to work at their own pace and do what they can. It might mean doing 3 or 4 repetitions instead of the full 10 reps, etc. Your balance can only improve over time. Some days your balance may be 'off' due to being tired, blood pressure, how you're feeling, etc., but overall, it will improve if you continue to do these exercises.

Your dad’s physical therapy really paid off! His balance is great! I’m 72 and have sone work to do. I have never had good balance, but it is getting better as I get stronger. I appreciate that you listed the individual exercises in this video’s description. That is very helpful!

My dad only really started to work out around 72...he's gotten so much stronger the past few years since doing strength training and walking regularly.

Your Dad was great. You need a novice like me in there…I would use the chair. Great balance examples. Your routines work well for me. Thank you from Charlie in Syracuse NY. I’m a big fan of your sessions.

Saved this from the other day when I ran out of time. It was today's workout "dessert", knowing your dad was joining. The ending balance exercise (lift one leg and pretend you're going over an object) was one I've not done before yet seriously appreciated. We've always had big dogs (think visible!) while our kids have a small one who we aren't accustomed to having underfoot. Voila!

@@ImprovedHealthI’ve done that “step over” exercise in either a hip arthritis or osteoporosis class. It’s a really good move. I enjoy your classes with your dad!

Thank you very much for the great exercise demonstration and all the advice and guidance, Jules. Your dad doesn't have a balance problem at all. He is very advanced. I can see him "walking the tightrope" like a circus performer :) 💛

He turns 75 soon and puts in over 10,000 steps a day. He just started working out about 3 years ago and is dedicated to exercise now. He also started strength training at the same time and does it every second day. I'm very proud of him for taking care of himself for the future.

Thank you so much for all your videos. I have had to stop for a few days because of an attack of TMJ, couldn't jump about because of the pain but the inflammation has subsided so will be back on course soon. Your dad is brill too.

If you are 60+, I highly recommend working on balance exercises 1-2 times a week. The strength training workouts will also help you to get stronger to prevent falls.
