Are the options in /etc/fstab specifically for the btrfs-filesystem or would "noatime,space_cache,ssd,discard=async" also work with ext4?

What I miss in LMDE 5 compared to Mint 20.3, is the Driver Manager app (in Settings: Administration) to install network and NVidia drivers. For first time users this will be a hurdle.

Very good point.
@Jay422072 жыл бұрын
how would you do that? I'm a newbie and I can't figure it out or where to look
@jktolford82722 жыл бұрын
@@Jay42207 I'm still looking at linux, not even a newbie. It *seems* that upon installation regular ubuntu-based Linux Mint has a gui process ( the Driver Manager app in Settings: Administration) that guides you thru the installation of needed drivers. LMDE does *not* so you you have to have more knowledge of which drivers you need & what commands in the terminal will get them. I won't even attempt LMDE w/o trying Mint first. If LMDE *is* to replace ubuntu Mint it really needs this feature.

Ermanno, Thank-you for the video. Your presentation and style are inviting. My attempt to manually install LMDE 5 did not go well on my side. After installation finished and upon restart, a grub rescue prompt appeared. Lord save us! Decided to reinstall Elsie again, instead of rescuing grub (out of league). The second time around a few changes were made, such as; assignment and then the last summary page appeared. Along with the target drive for Elsie, other drives appeared on this page. Which Included; a raid array and Gentoo disk (my daily drives) and another drive with Linux loaded. The summary indicated that changes would be made to their partitions. Not wanting to mess with partitions on my core disks, the install process was aborted. Is it normal for other drives in the machine to be listed and their partitions modified? if not, does it make sense to pull all (other) drives in the machine before installing Elsie? Or the reverse; leave all drives in the machine and let the installation process manage grub files between them? Thank-you for considering my query, john

I have been a fan since lmde 3 I see more distributions jumping off Ubuntu to Debian again. I hope lmde 5 is the distribution that make mint stop all Ubuntu bases and focus on lmde as it's only base. Having said that it's alot more work to get it polished but the base is more stable.

Now I also followed this guide and installed this Linux Mint Debian Edition. First time using btrfs and zram-tools as swap, ever. Does the ssd flag also improve SSD M2 harddrives?
@tiomkinnyborg22892 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your guide. I followed it and it works. I currently run LM20 and after months of tinkering I managed to make it see other devices on my network. Using the same editing of smb.conf this new version of mint will not see anything on the net work. Why is it that any 'upgrade' of Linux breaks things that the old versions did out of the box? LM18 saw network drives. 19 never worked. 20 managed after months of tinkering and now it's back to square one with this new version. Is networking too hard for linux to master? Why are rounded corners more important than getting work done? I've gone back to my old version.

So I walked through the entire process twice, was super careful and did everything you did exactly. Got all the way through Mint installation, but when I click the restart prompt and press enter to remove the media just like you, I get a black screen with a blinking cursor in the corner after VB reboots. Is this not something you can do in a Virtual Box environment? Or am I missing something else perhaps?

can i install lmde5 on a win10 multiboot system with btrfs and legacy boot somehow or will the new grub mess something up in windows side? maybe i can just do everything like i did with ext4, and now just change root and home partition to btrfs, but boot partition still ext4?
@akhilmarar65462 жыл бұрын
For multiboot with windows, the boot partition must be in FAT and not in ext4 from what I know. Windows Installer creates a FAT boot partition by default and upon Linux installation, GRUB gets installed on that partition. The other partions are: windows side - NTFS and on the Linux side (root and home) can be as per your choice.

Interesting. But I prefer Debian; the Linux Pachamama (Linux Mother). And it's easy ton change desktop for another than Gnome. But Mint has a really efficient support (specially in France). So it's why it could be a very good choice. In my case, I allready use a stable distribution (Debian) and I test new features / versions on Manjaro with the rolling update.
