Tesla in trying to grow as rapidly as possible is of course going to have teething pains, it’s just an inevitable byproduct of ultra high growth rate. Historically they always seem to address their problems eventually. Tesla has always been the leader and will most likely continue to do so. Say and think what you want about Elon, but Tesla isn’t JUST Elon, their tech is STILL at least 4-5 years ahead of everyone else,,,, and now with the very recent HUGE price drops , it’s only going to accelerate their growth and further cement their #1 spot. Numbers don’t lie. In my small nor cal rural town I’ve seen a huge uptick in #s of teslas in last 8-12 months. I do feel bad for the people who paid the higher prices just recently though, I’m sure they’re not happy.

I just canceled my order for an ID.4. The reservation system was a mess. Orders from the Chattanooga plant were getting filled with no apparent logic or with explanation. Worse, VW sat on my $500 deposit for 8 months and then raised the price $1500 for all ID.4s built after January 4, with the price increase retroactive to all orders in the pipeline. Finally, all the problems with the ID.4 software. I thought this might be tolerable if I had knowledgeable support from a local dealership. But based on several unhappy interactions during the prolonged waiting period for my order to be filled, I had no confidence in the VW dealers in my area. So now I am looking at all of the new EVs coming on the market this year to find another choice.

Looks like the ID4 will be added to the growing list of EVs that I won't buy.

I recently traded in my FE @ about 61k miles. While I loved the car, the software glitches and sensor glitches were becoming concerning. With only a couple of exceptions (that required exiting and walking around the car backwards 3 times ) I didn’t really have any disabling errors. But the car would throw random sensor failures and the proximity sensors sometimes had trouble detecting the fob. Don’t even get me started on the software itself which initially I forgave because of promised OTAs…and then there’s CarNet/MyVW - no words. I really began to feel like VW couldn’t be depended on, the silence was deafening. I really loved the car, it made me VERY happy. It was my first EV and I’m thankful that after driving the hell out of it for 18 months the only shop time was tire replacement and having to replace the charge door - twice (don’t get me started on THAT design). I don’t regret my decision to by the ID4, I stand by my statement that it was the best car choice I had ever made, at the time. Now I have a Hyundai Ioniq 5, which while it lacks a few of ID4s quirks (turning radius, rear cubbies/ski hatch) it makes up for in software, charge speed and overall EV experience.

I had sent myself all the diagnostics to show them the error codes it was throwing at me and they had the gumption to say they did not find any error codes. After leaving the dealer, i reinstalled my dongle and found they erased all the error codes in the system. I now have accumulated 30 pages or so of error codes and sent them into VW. They have not returned a letter or any acknowledgement. I don’t expect I’ll every buy another VW product based on their performance thus far. Especially the software issues. This happened 2 years ago. In the first six months I saw the Volkswagen dealership 6 times with car downtimes of up to 2 weeks for software updates. Currently it hasn't let me down but the small software problems continue, indeed new ones are added. Windows that lower rather than rise, air conditioning to the maximum with the impossibility of turning off ... I have not taken it in to get software update since buying my ID 4 in Dec 2021. I have had no issues with my car except maybe 4 times the autopilots control would not work for a trip but was fine when I went to drive it again. I have put 55,000 miles on it in 15 months. I have used fast charging for over 95% of those miles at Electrify American charging station which is close to where I live and work. The battery has depreciated by about 5% which is most certainly due to fast charging it so much which is my fault. My monthly mileage went up to 5250 miles for month of March due to working 6 days a week. When I am finished with 3 years of free charging I will have put 150,000 miles of free charging on my ID4. The VW Tiguan gets about 24 miles per gallon so at $3,00 per gallon then this amount to approx $18750 in gas savings and remember I do not charge at home.

I received an AWD Id4 pro s in December of 2021 and have had no software issues. Probably, the first editions were more of a problem than later manufactured cars. This is the best car I've ever owned. Sorry about all the problems you've had.

You could have saved yourself a lot of time learning about Volkswagen's corporate culture if you had paid attention during Dieselgate.

What changed in the company culture since Ferry Porsche sold its design of the KdF aka VW Beetle to Adolf Hitler in 1933? VW got nationalized and belongs to Germany. Thats all...

Alex, I have been told by friends VW has resolved these problems on units currently being sold. It seems your mistake was leaving CA before taking advantage of the state's lemon law. This law limits the of attempts a dealer has to repair a car before refunding the purchase.

Damn, sorry to hear all this Alex. Thanks for the heads up though, were it not for you, I'd have ordered one too.

Hi Alex. I feel your pain brother. I had to get a lemon law lawyer for all of the problems I’ve had with my 2022 Pro S. I hope to have my case resolved within the next few months. I feel like the biggest fool for selling my Tesla Model Y for this piece of sh!t. As soon as I get VW to take back their joke of a car I’m running back to Tesla and never looking back.

Here in the UK we have both the ID3 and ID4, so here's my story of my ID3 [sshhh, I'll say it quietly - I think the ID3 is the better vehicle]. I finally responded to the great 12V battery recall that VW have ongoing, along with a major software upgrade so that [once again] I can resume OTA updates. Also, the car is about 20 months old so they said they'd do an inspection as well. I booked my appointment and the nearest date was 2 months ahead [yep, they can all do the long wait times]. The appointment was 19th December [can you see where this is going?] They needed the car for a day, but better make it 2 days just in case they get issues. So I take it in and go to work. By lunch time I get a call. The very polite service manager said, "It might be a good idea to come and get your car this evening, if you can. I've just done the work on 2 ID3s and 1 ID4 and they're all non-responsive. They won't wake up. Perhaps it might be better for you to have the car over Xmas and New Year?" I was in there asap. The re-appointment is Jan 23rd, next week, in fact. I'm hoping VW have got this stuff sorted. The dealer wants the car for a week. They're prepared to let me have a car, but the don't have any BEVs in their courtesy car fleet, so I'll go to work on my e0bike or get a lift on wet days. Why did I get a VW? The lease rates were excellent at the time and I couldn't afford a Tesla. The car itself is a good one, but boy, oh boy, does VW need to sort out the software that comes with it, because it's awful. So Alex, you already have my sympathy, and I haven't watched this video yet. Here goes...

Feeling the same about my ID.4 - I have not had the problems you add, but the software is pretty crappy - with Car Play. I got the email saying that updates are coming which require a visit to the dealer, but that was 3 months ago and nothing since. Plus, some of the issues with screen lock ups and ignoring buttons presses are in their ICE cars too, someone was driving a new Volkswagen and asked me about the ID.4 and I mentioned the software problems and he had them too. Also, the new ID.Buzz has the same display center, complete with lack of lights behind the temperature and such, which is just lazy. Plus I have hit the heat button and had the temperature go down, so the button alignment is off too. Plus there is the problems with the app and charging at Electrify America Locations you mentioned. Between all of that, and the newer models coming out not adding anything and barely a range change, when my lease is up I think I will go elsewhere for an EV - I don't like Tesla's interiors, or prices, or lack of car play (love the chargers and lots of locations though). So I guess I will visit other EVs on the market next year.

I read too many reports on the software issues. Just canceled my iD4 order. It’s too bad VW hasn’t been able to turnaround those issues in a big way.

The fact that my 2015 VW Jetta has 4 wheel disc brakes, and the VW and Audi versions of the ID.4 still have disc and drum brakes just boggles my mind. And then there's the software....

I reserved an ID4. Knowing that it may have software problem, but hope that the 'new' 2023 Americanized software will fix everything. After seeing your video, I probably will back off. On the other hand, my wife got a Tesla model 3 last week, she never feels happier for a car. There is reason why Tesla is everywhere in Califonia.

I feel sorry for you, really. When buying my ioniq5 back on March 22, I already knew the id4 software issues, and this pushed the decision to dismiss the ID4 right away. VW is shooting itself in the foot by not fixing these issues.
@JasonAndras Жыл бұрын
Can anyone comment on whether these software/app issues are relevant to the new 2023 model of the ID.4? On one hand, I might expect VW to have made improvements on subsequent year models; on the other hand perhaps they're all running the same software?

Tesla's Model 3 was buggy when it came out...in 2017, but a year later it was fine. It seems like you are having too many problems after 2 years, and why don't OTA updates work yet? I thought that was supposed to be enabled in the first update.

Good video. Unfortunately confirms all the scepticism I have towards VW being able to write software. But the 12V battery is actually very important. When working on the vehicle or being in an accident, I don't want to unintentionally touch 400V.

Alex, loved your video. Sorry about the journey! I seriously considered the ID4, but fortunately bought a Mach-E and have had some weird infotainment messages, which have now all been fixed by over air updates. My account got turned off on my very first charge session resulting in me charging with each vendor separately - took 6mo to fix! Other than that, the EV has been awesome over 8K miles - I too got the 12V battery messages, but just ignored and they went away (eventually).

I was on the fence when the ID.4 came out but seriously considered it. By the time I was ready to buy, the Polestar2 was available. I got a Polestar2 instead of the ID.4 and glad I did. Do I wish the Polestar2 was as roomy as the ID.4? Sure, but I like everything else about the Polestar2 over the ID.4.
