I got a 2023 RWD and have been pleasantly surprised by how good the real world range is. I recently went on a 234 mile day trip, and it used only 72% of the battery, which corresponds to a range of 325 miles, which is 50 miles over the EPA range of 275 miles.

Leased a 23 pro s AWD last weekend. Love it so far. Rides like a luxury car, feels impeccably put together. It was a pain until the home charger was installed-which was made worse by it being around 20 F the first week which killed range and slowed fast charging. It’s been a dream since the 220 outlet was installed

I got my Pro S back in June of 2021. Perhaps 3 or 4 times there were burps in the software that were easily corrected by a restart of the Infotainment setup. After the new 3.1 update it's been even better. Faster charging, greater range and faster B mode recoup of power. Love the backup of the seat upon leaving and return to the proper setting once you're seated. Hope it stays reliable like this. Better by far than an ICE car.

I have a 2021 iD4 and recently updated software. For a week after the update the car would not connect to my iphone app. VW fixed this over the air and now the car needs to know who is the driver (me, my wife, or a guest). It involves touching the screen to confirm I am the driver. After that the new software is faster. I like some of the new features, including the automatic hold when I stop. Other than that the car has worked will for us.

This is an swesome review! I got my ID4 in Dec (2022 Pro RWD). I have been surprised by the range loss in the cold weather! I had to chuckle at the software review. Every thing you said, has happened! I was locked in the car at one point and had to use the keyfob to unlock the door so I could exit! None of the buttons inside worked. The screen has turned off while driving, the rear view camera stayed on and yelled as I was driving forward, and just like you said a simple reset is all it took. I was a little spooked by the locking doors while I was still inside though, can't deny that.

Thank you very much for an honest review of your ID-4. You are the FIRST one that didn't reference Tesla, or flat out performance compared to ( enter the brand here). This was real world. I am a HUGE VW fan, have owned 5 and one Porsche. They build a great car, but not the best in electronics. That was the main thing I am currently researching. I plan on getting one, the Pro S like yours, but a new 2022. I live in Mississippi which currently as the worse charge infrastructure of any state, odd since Nissan builds the Leaf here. I bought the BMW i-3 and installed a charger in my garage. Loved it, no issues, but was driving just beyond the charge range daily and had to use the REX a lot. Not to mention there was, at the time, only one place you could get replacement tires for it...and they were pricey. The VW place near here had several first editions and I was able to drive one when they first arrived. As is the case, they would not sell one on the ground and you had to order on line..and as I suspected...as time when on, they have a surplus and you can now get a new one off the lot. Again thank you for a GREAT review.

Lol, mainly because is was our main car. My wife has medical issues that resulted in a 350 mile round trip 1x per month for treatments. Family lives 190 miles away, that was another 380 miles 1x per month. I only drove my truck back n forth to work, took the id.4 everywhere else, we only spent about $50/month is gas for my truck (less than 600 miles per month) We also live in the Midwest, wide open area, we drive 30 miles just to go to the store. Glad it was helpful! Of course, try to avoid the potholes, but otherwise is does a good job absorbing impacts. Ride quality is good. @@offtheshelfrides maybe the new mk2 ID cars coming at the end of the year will make the move over. I will say ok the id3 it was fitted with 215/55/r18 tyres EV specific so they were terrible for grip and handling but were low rolling resistance - my change to 225/50/r18 increased tyre life but also lost me about 20 miles of range. I still love our First Edition. That said, we have been put on notice that the battery has a major issue. The car could come to a sudden stop and maybe cause an accident. The car is under recall and VW doesn’t yet have a fix. This after at least two or three battery updates that never happened. All of this at the same time as the rebates and Tesla’s lowering it’s prices. Now we are trading it in for a Model Y. It turns out the AWD id4 is the same price as the Y. The current issue means we are not inclined to take this car on the road. Thanks for your videos. Let me know what you think, Patti Mackin Chicago

They can update to I think 3.2. The best would be to get one that is already updated. The easy way to figure out if it has been updated is on the Drivers display. If it shows state-of-charge percentage (above 10%) then it has been updated. The old version only showed the percentage under 10%.

I normally just tip the brake a little bit to turn down the travel assist. Turn it on by your steering wheel and off with your brake. After a few times that was a convenient workaround for me. If you change your tiers be aware that the original tiers are special designed for ev’s (low resistance). So if you change them with standard tiers, you will lose some range.

My wife and I just got the 2023 ID4 PRO and blue color (which is a pretty dark turquoise blue that changes color depending on the light; my wife likes the brown seat accents but I'm not a fan, but the blue exterior only gives you this option). It does have it's cons, but I wouldn't call the acceleration soulless as some say, just very mid, but the turning is really accurate and makes remarkably tight turns when need be. Like a lot of car companies making electric cars, Volkswagen chose to bury way too much into the touch screen (look how minimal and futuristic!!!--said no one ever), but the light haptics are nice at the bottom. With two cars over a decade old, I did over a year of research in buying my family's first electric car as our world faces climate change chaos, and while there is trade-offs with almost any car you purchase this is the best all-electric SUV you can buy in 2023. My wife bought this for her commute in July of 2023, and it has been a wonderful purchase. Ranked #4 in Car in Driver for Electric SUVS, this is actually #1 when you realize that the cars ranked above it are definitely not SUVs, but rather just small luggage, low-riding sedans on an SUV frame: Ioniq 5 (#1); EV6 (#2); Mach-E (#3). The only other car this far up on the list is the Nissan Ariya (#5) that comes with a stellar design and actually looks like an SUV with a high center of gravity, but its definitely more expensive and doesn't come with federal tax credit (the batteries aren't made in the US). As I am in California, we will get $2,000 tax rebate + the federal tax credit of $7,500. And when you take this into consideration, the Volkswagen ID4 is a bargain as the tax credits kick in making it slightly cheaper than almost any hybrid SUV on the market. Electric cars are about 1/3 to 1/4 of the energy cost to fossil fuel cars, and have 50% less expense for maintenance. So if you are looking for a sensible (instead sporty and sexy) car, especially for SUVs with ample luggage space for families, this is the best on the market.

I've owned several VW Passats that have had similar software glitchs as described in your video where the rear camera does not function or infotainment system doesn't activate until after driving 10 min or longer. I think what is happening is that prior to shutting down the car the infotainment system received an OTA (over-the-air) software download and the next time the car is started the install process delays the infotainment system from starting until the software is fully installed. Not sure this is what is causing the problem only a theory.

These early 2021 ID.4's aren't even updatedable without going to the dealership and having new hardware swapped because they didn't put the right ones in it from the start. They were doing that but it started causing problems so they stopped until they could fix the issue. I believe they just rushed it and software people just weren't up to par with what an EV actually needed.

The ID.4 became available in quantity in the USA when the Chattanooga plant came on line. When I purchased mine last year it was made here in the USA. Depending on various US regulation, there were (at one time) around 140 structural changes to be able to import a Non-USA made vehicle for sale. So there are distinct structural differences. There has been a typical "fake news" approach to reviews of the ID. 4 in this country (USA). They all seem to be written by the same person. And that person complained about the piano black as being cheap plastic (the opposite of truth). I came close to buying '21 model because I like the White steering wheel with blue accents. The fake news people, with no experience to justify it, claimed it would be hard to keep clean. My only complaint is that I could not justify the extra charges for it. Out of 60 cars available only one had the white interior, likely because it's the top package. The '23 ID.4 that I purchased is listed as having a 275 mile range on a 100% charge (of course you can't get too low or it may stop on you). The first week I reach 300 on a 100% charge. Winter driving range dropped by about 40 miles. My dealer let me drive an ID. 4 for a weekend, which is the ONLY time I paid for charging. NONE of the DC fast chargers (other than Tesla) are within 25 miles and I seldom use them. I drove a lot at first. Now I'm down to about 150 miles a week. It's still cold here (37 F last night ) last night. I have two destinations I go to regularly that are about 100 miles away. I can drive that 200 miles and have 40 to 60 miles left, even in the cold. The EA chargers often won't support their rated transfer rate. I found on (about 40 miles away) that could take my from 10 to 80% is about 20 miles (150 KWH). Most of the EA chargers are considerably slower. I have an Emporia 48 amp charger ($.08 cents per KW) It charges at 37-38 miles per hour. Using the pre-heat function from the ID.4 to heat the cabin causes the battery to be heated and added considerable range. A 60 amp breaker could not run the Emporia longer than maybe 20 minutes before tripping. I changed that to the 70 amp breaker, hard wired. I had heard that Canadian ID.4s came with the heat pump. It was also claimed to dramatically increase mileage (but proved to be far less that what was claimed). The Canadian ID.4 can be purchased with heat pump for something like $1500 (I have heard). Lane keeping assist, is dangerous for me. I've have had it move halfway into the opposite lane for no reason. It's better on Interstates, but I seldom use it. I don't drive in center lane. I drive some to the right. this is largely because many approaching drivers are one or over the center line. They cannot be trusted. I can turn off just the lane center by it's self. I can easily turn centering on or off, or turn it on in the setup section. The lag in accelerating when some one turns off may be due to VWs Junior when it achieved 1st place but was down rated for passing a stopped vehicle during the Darpa Urban challenge. The VW Stanley won the Darpa Grand challenge outright (and was the 1st to actually finish that trial). These are autonomous vehicle trials. My only issue with the software was that it requires I log in once in a while. Replacement tires must be EV rated. Goodyear has announced that they are working on tires that can last 70,000 while most EV tires typically achieve 20,000. I enjoyed the driving coach on my '18 Tiguan. I now use an Iphone app that rates my driving. This has, I believe, dramatically increased my tire life, range, and pays me back a little bit. Several insurance companies provide these and there are some that are not related to insurance. The Television Program "Motor Week" originates in Maryland. They have chosen the ID.4 as the BEST EV on the market. I have over 8000 miles with more than 12 32nds of tread. Several EV makes are switching to the Tesla NACM charger plug. VW has announced that they will be in future changed to NACM. They said they'll provide and adapter no charge to owners with CCS sockets. Would I buy another ID.4? Probably not. The reasons I wanted that body and style no longer exist. I'd probably go for a Jetta next time. If it was in my price range, I'd consider the ID.7 or maybe an ID.4 GTX but I'm sure they won't be.

@@offtheshelfridesThere is a distinct bias against VW, some of which is government and some from Fake Media. Unlike most newcomers to the dishonesty media, I've been complaining about it since the 80'. There used to be (I don't know if it still exists) a bias against foreign made pickup trucks. I know that the Japanese typically have their beds made in the USA. But, I'd like to see the Amarok made here. I've been telling VW for about 24 years that they cannot be considered as seriously as they should without a Pickup truck. Some sites rank the Honda Ridgeline as the finest pickup made at this time. I've also asked that VW be a leader, not a follower in technology integration and availability. At one time I was a Honda salesman, more recently I sold Hyundai. When Honda came out with the first Accord they included most of the features standard. That caused quit a stir. I hate the model differentiation that exist in the industry. I had to pay $thousands more to get features that make my life more comfortable. These fall into areas of safety, and of usability. I have back and other nerve problems. I prefer to have my grocers pick my items and load my vehicle. With the '21 Tiguan there was no interior release. The foot swipe is a good feature to have also. Three areas I had of major concern were: A. No interior hatch release (on my '21 Tiguan AWD) B. Insufficient turn lighting C. Adaptive Cruise Control These were resolved in my ID.4 and were the reason I was willing to pay so much more than my '21 Tiguan. A major complaint I have with German cars is there affection for all black interiors.

I just wanted to post what my experience has been with my 2021 ID.4 Pro S RWD. I have owned it since July 2021, and currently at 31,000 miles. I have had no maintenance issues, and replaced my rear tires at 25,000 miles and currently have 31,000 on my front tires and I think I can get 35,000 to 40,000 miles on them, time will tell. Have I had the occasional glitch with a screen, a sensor or a screen blank for a minute? Of course, but they all went away after turning the car off and back on just like a computer reboot. I have had no hard fails. There’s been a lot of chatter lately about the EA chargers and I wanted to give you my take on it. I travel to work one day a week and its about 170 miles round trip, and I always hit the EA charger on the way back home. So I have probably used the EA charging system at least 75 - 100 times since buying my car. I have also taken what I call 5 long trips from just south of Atlanta to Melbourne, FL, Orlando, FL, Pensacola Beach, Fl. I have a Wallbox charger on a 50amp breaker which has so far worked flawlessly as a level 2 charger. My experience with EA chargers has been really excellent. Have I had a charger not work or charge slow? Of course, but I immediately called EA to either report it or get it rebooted, which 9 times out of 10 fixes the issue. Only one time did I have a charger that could not be revived and it was in Orlando, Florida at a mall where the chargers get heavy use. I charge now standard to 90%, and I have seen no degradation and with a 100,000 mile, 8yr warranty I am not worried. Today I was at 245 mile range on the Guess-O-Meter at 90%. At 100% I have gotten as high as 275 miles. I have never opened the EA App to charge, I simply plug the charger into my car, once it establishes communication, I double click my iPhone for Apple Pay point it at the flat back box on the charger and when I hear a ping I know its going to charge. Again I have no idea how an Android phone works with EA chargers. I drive most of the time in Comfort Mode, unless on a long trip then I stay in ECO mode. I go in Sport Mode just for fun but I have never worried that I didn’t have enough power to keep up with the rest of the pack on the highway. I have found that playing with the modes you lose about 2 miles of range for each increase in mode from Eco to Comfort to Sport. When I use a charger the last thing I really care about is the Kw speed. I know thats what a lot of you complain about but what matters to me is “Time” and especially my personal time. So if I am at 20%, I expect to be at 80% in about 30 minutes (in a perfect world you should be charging at about 7 miles a minute) and 100% in about 50 minutes. I can live with that and again if it says its going to be way longer then I either change to a different charger or if no others are available I am calling EA to have that charger looked at and rebooted. 9 times out of 10 that fixes the issue. If you want to bash EA that’s fine, but at least post what your initial charge was, were you at 20% or less or were you at 40 to 50%? That makes a huge difference on where you are on the charging curve and how many Kw’s you going to get or how long it will take. For those of you who think EA is monitoring the charging speed of thousands of chargers across the USA you will be sadly mistaken, they are not. That is why I stress to people to call in malfunctioning chargers or they will not get an engineering ticket against them and they won’t get fixed which screws it for the next person who wants to use that charger. So that’s been my experience with my ID.4.
@offtheshelfrides
@offtheshelfrides Жыл бұрын
Thank you! I wasn't bashing EA, I was stating the charging speeds due to cold weather because the battery in the ID.4 is cold due to the temperatures and there isn't battery preconditioning to get the max speeds. I see that you live in a warmer climate, so this doesn't affect you as much. 90% of the time, I have not had issues with EA.

@@offtheshelfrides Tesla automatically preconditions the battery if you have a Supercharger as a destination, or a waypoint. I don't know if VW takes customer suggestions like Tesla does, but I would lobby for a preconditioning button if they did. I have only had my car a week and was expecting to see something closer to the 170kW max than the 60-70kW I have been getting. Both days I tried the CCS charge it was 45-48 degrees and I had driven about 12 miles to one station and about 2 miles to the other, so I guess that is the answer. Hopefully it will be better for the summer road trips.

First off, best review I've found on this vehicle - thanks! Was just curious about a couple things... I've learned that the front and rear tires are different sizes. Was wondering how, or if you had the tires rotated (i.e. left to right and vice versa)? The ID.4 has the two pedal action with the ability to coast. Have you had a chance to experience the single pedal action and compared the two? BTW, I'm actually looking at the ID.4 and the Cadillac Lyriq as my two EV car choices. Not really sure all the extra bells and whistles are worth the extra $15K on the Cadillac, but it sure is nice.
@offtheshelfrides
@offtheshelfrides Жыл бұрын
Thank you and glad I could help. Yes the wheels are a staggered setup. I never rotated them, I just replaced the rears at around 25K miles. "D" mode is your ICE equivalent, when you let off the gas you will coast and have to apply the brake to slow down - note that you still get regenerative Braking when pressing the brake pedal. "B" Mode is VW's 1-pedal driving, but it does not bring you to a stop. It takes you down to 2-3 mph then you have to use the brakes to stop. The ID.4 is a great choice, especially the Pro S. I would just say don't buy a 2021. 2022 or 2023 come with the newest software and a little increase in range. Very balanced review. I have an ID.4 2021 version and I had a very similar impression, I had only one instance on a very hot day (110+) in West Texas after charging the car in an EA station the car went completely crazy, driver assistance was no working and all kind of lights came on, but we could drive the car. In the evening after the temperature fell below 100 everything starting working again. A few days later I took it to the dealer and they could not find anything wrong but they reset some of the internal controllers just in case. Would I buy it again? Not sure, now that the Tesla gets the 7.5K tax credit it is a much tougher call, particularly because of the SuperCharger network, which is incredibly much better than EA. It also does not help the VW can not get their act together in updating the SW and that the car, at least for now, does not have an effective OTA update.

Yes, they are. Mine was actually built at their German plant and shipped over. The U.S. models are built in VW's plant in Tennessee

Thanks to our marvelous, genius and wise politicians here in Germany, I pay up to $ 65,- per charge for my ID.4 on a hypercharger. And no, I have no choice, because the card is from my company. EV sucks! 🤢

That is not the EV's fault. I thought id.4 had free charging or discounted through we connect? I watch @batterylife out of Germany and he talks about these discount charging companys. Might check into that.

You don’t have to drive that car because it is free .It’s a bit stupid just to drive because it is free .Of course there is nothing free in USA !

If you are talking about not buying gas as free then yes, DC Fast Charging is free for 3 years. Charging at home costs about $50/month, so 6x less money spent on electric than gas.

VW has not been proven with electric cars. And especially the ID.4 and ID.6. The fact that others cars have had parts replaced and had software issues only shows that you and your wife got lucky. Lets talk about the ID4 after the warranty period.

Yes, we were lucky, but that it the way it seems to go with all cars now. Even the ICE cars have issues that plague them, when others with the same setup, don't have problems...so we'll see if they can all get it straightened out.

Like all EVs, it's so expensive that it does not save you money at all. It's purely for entertainment, really.
@offtheshelfrides

It actually did save us money, but you have to be in the right position. We were truly saving. We only financed 1/4 of the price and we put 30K miles on it in a year of ownership. Only about $60 electricity increase, which we pay $0.10/kw. Free EA charging...also..we save $100's each month. Gas would have been ridiculous, considering it was over $4/gallon then

@@offtheshelfrides Using Canadian numbers with metric numbers ($CAD, km, liters), comparing an ID.4 with a CR-V. Driving 15k per year. Using prices including taxes and freight etc. $1.50/liter. $0.15/kWh. CR-V considering winter = 8.5l/100km. ID.4 28 kWh/100km. I'm skewing a slight favor for the ID.4 here. CR-V in 10 years = $40k + $2k/yr in fuel = $60k. ID.4 = $52 1/2 k (including government incentive discount) + $650/yr in hydro = $59k. So the cost of driving, not considering maintenance, is about the same over 10 years. This comparison would change a lot when you drive, like what, 30k miles, 48k km? That's an awful lot of driving. From my standpoint, a car for regular around town use, not for commercial use, but to do groceries, pick up the kids and take them to sports, regular summer vacation, weekend trips not too too far away, the ID.4 or any other EV, won't save one money. I compared it to a CR-V, but there are other choices that cost less. Like the Rogue, or major breakthrough, cost wise anyway, the new Trax. The ID.4 drives way nicer, granted. I did similar comparisons with the Outlander PHEV vs Rogue vs RAV4 vs CR-V. Most families won't save money picking the much more expensive PHEV. It's disappointing, because you'd figure that all this EV and PHEV stuff should let one save money, but it falls short. And then there is the probably of availability and dealers jacking up the price. The ID.4 price here, that's not the price you'd pay at the dealer. Dealer with have bullshit stories how the base model isn't a thing, and they toss in extras like mandatory rim protection and other fluff to jack up the price. They do this because they can. It's absolutely *THE* very worst time in history to buy a car it seems. It's so depressing, I tell people to not bother for now, let all the crap settle, and hang on to what you have....

@Antiorganizer appreciate the work you did, but I found the best comparison for anyone considering getting an EV, is to compare it to what they are driving. Average Miles THEY drive etc....that is the only way for it to make sense or not for each individual. We drive the ID.4 more than we normally would because it was cheaper than driving my f-150 so we drove it everywhere. My truck only went to work and home. We got our ID.4 from a dealership as a demo, 2300 miles, we bought it for $1800 under MSRP and got the $7500 tax credit, plus we had $34k in equity with our trade in.....we easily save money but not every situation is the same. Like, you calculations were fine, but I would not buy a CH-R so that comparison doesn't work for me. But I understand your point.

My 1986 Porsche 928S has a 23 gallon fuel tank and gets 24 mpg a range over 500 miles on the highway and takes 5 minutes to fill up does 0-60 in 5.7 sec and a top speed around 160 mph. The rear hatch has enough room for my folding ebike . I know how to fix it so no EVs for now unless the prices come down and charging time is reduced.
