Karl, next time you get to talk to him, ask him to tell you the story when he played and won the Red's Open 9-ball tournament here, in Houston, TX. I graduated high school in '85 and got to see him play, unaware that he would become the world's greatest pool player. Back then he was using the name Cesar Morales, according to the story, because word was going around of a Filipino guy named Efren being so good that no one would play him. So he used his friend's name to play (and destroy everyone) in the tournament, lol.

To add: Efren got the name Cesar Morales from his friend who was the original owner of the $10 pool cue. Since Efren didn't have a pool cue going to America his friend Cesar Morales gave him that $10 pool cue which Efren used in tournaments.

Efren said in another interview that he played the best pool of his life before he quit pool for 6 years early in his career in the Philippines because nobody would play him. Then he became a carom billiards champion as he refers to here. When nobody would play him carom billiards anymore he went back to pool then came to the USA for the first time.

This is true, I think he said from 1976 to 1982 he stopped playing pool and was barred from playing in tournaments. Nobody would play money games against him even if he gave them ridiculous spot. so he decided to stop and played Carom. He got so good at it too and no one would play him there too. So he came back to pool after 3 years i think 🤣

Greetings from Bakersfield, California. I can't say I'm his biggest fan because he's revered by so many around the world. He inspires me to be a better player. I respect the game and only like to play against people that have that same sense of honor when playing. In my humble opinion, he's the GOAT. Not only because of his other worldly skill, but for his lovely demeanor. He's known to be a kind person. He certainly is humble which cannot be easy in those circles when you're that good. Just for anyone unsure what he means by Carom, @4:10 he is talking abut 3-cushion billiards where you must contact one ball and any three rails and then contact the other ball. A point is scored for each successful attempt and they play to like 40. The tables are large - usually 10 feet - and have no pockets.

OMG hahahahaha i remeber that COLOR OF MONEY GAME he had with Strickland, hahahaha Earl almost gone crazy at the finish when he lost to Efren very closely by comming from behind win by Efren 120-117. HAHAHAHA I saw the Reaction of Earl's face after the game, you couldnt even paint his face after leading 17rack 104-87, then Efren had a Rally to beat Earl. Hahahaha but that was too horible for Earl, because that was a WINNER TAKES ALL 100k USD. So since Earl loses, he went home literally empty handed. Unless the organizers or Efren himself at least gave him some few bucks for his plane fare. But thats something i dont know for sure. But fpr me that Game is the Best 9ball game of alltime!

@@306Marvin ahh okay cool, I think I have heard of it. I believe Jayson Shaw did a run of +300 odd relatively recently (maybe a year ago) unless I am thinking of a different discipline. I remember being a kid and knocking around balls on a 7 ft pool table with yellows and reds and trying to do something similar and re-racking after the black being potted to continue on, this had to be some 25 odd years ago hahaha. Glad I was already learning after the GOAT before even knowing what the hell I was doing 😂🤣
