Thank you James for doing this. I just self built my house. And will be self installing the solar equipment that I have purchased from signature solar. So that I can possibly retire in 3 or 4 years. Without worrying about any utility bills.

I have a question on the GridBoss. Our meter can is next to two 200-amp manual disconnects (one for house and the other for 40x60 shop). The 200-amp house critical loads panel is approx. 125 feet from the meter can and the 200-amp shop panel is approx. 95 feet from the meter can. Ideally, we would like to back up the critical loads in the house (perhaps lights in the shop as well). The part we are not sure about is how to utilize the smart ports to shed loads if the Gridboss is that far away from the Critical loads panel without incurring a large expense for wiring. It is our understanding that the GB should be near the meter to also limit wiring expense. This would allow the FB21 and batteries to be placed almost anywhere (within cable limits) using one 70-amp wire and communication cabling. Your thoughts on where to place the GB for smart port usage?
@RockyBroadSolarLLC6 күн бұрын
@TheComingGlory Tough one. Do you have a 400A service? The Grid Boss could backup up to a 200A service, so if you have a split 400A service, you would hypothetically need 2 FB21s and 2 Gridbosses. In that case you could locate each Gridboss and inverter at the structure it serves and just intercept the feeder that feeds each panel. If it is a 200A service that just happens to feed 2 separate sub panels then that is a different story. The main issue is if you are getting this permitted and inspected. NEC code requires any detached structures be fed by one single feeder to a sub panel that then feeds the loads to that structure. It would not pass inspection if you removed some loads from the sub panels and trenched them back to the one single Gridboss at the service.

@@RockyBroadSolarLLC It is a 400A service, 200A for house and 200A for shop with separate manual disconnects for both next to the meter can (mentioned earlier). I already considered the option of having two but it is just not in the budget. In addition, I still do not have the space for both GB and FB21 in the house and also prefer that the batteries are not in the house (batteries must be in a heated environment). I guess I may need to reach out to SignatureSolar to get some ideas as I am at an impasse.

Will Enphase inverters be compatible and is there a benefit to having A/C coupled or should they be converted to DC coupled.
@RockyBroadSolarLLC4 күн бұрын
@cobom1628 yes that is the beauty of AC coupling, is that it allows you to connect pretty much any existing grid tied system to the battery backup system. Both AC and DC coupled have their own pros and cons. If you already have an Enphase system installed I would leave it as is and AC couple. Thanks for watching.

If I’m building a modern house off grid, would I need the Grid Boss to go with the Flex Boss? It sounds like there is still a benefit
@RockyBroadSolarLLC19 күн бұрын
If it is completely off grid, then no, it would not provide as much value, but you could still use it for the smart ports or if you were planning on paralleling multiple inverters. Thanks for watching!

For those of us that live above 2000m, are there any options? I understand that the cooling capacity of the thin air is less but it's also consistently cool up here and I would be installing in a cool basement.

I'm going to add 2 18ks and 6 eg4 indoor wall batteries. That I recently purchased from signature solar. On to an existing 10,080 watt pv only grid tied system. Would the grid boss simplify this installation.?
@RockyBroadSolarLLCАй бұрын
Yes the GridBoss would simplify the installation. Each inverter could land inside the GridBoss with a breaker connection and you would not need separate combiner panels and bypass switches. This would also give you that smart load functionality. Thanks for watching the channel.

The generator I have is an older 6500watt onan. That I took out of my old motorhome that I lived in next to my house as I built it. Before I gave it away. How would I know if it's a dirty generator.
@RockyBroadSolarLLCАй бұрын
Unless it is an "inverter type" generator then it is almost definitely dirty power. If you can find a datasheet on it, you should be able to find the Total Harmonic Distortion. The GridBoss manual states to keep THD under 3%, but in general, anything over 5% is considered dirty. Thanks for watching!

@Jamesshowalter... Can the grid boss be parallel?
@RockyBroadSolarLLC24 күн бұрын
To my knowledge you cannot parallel Gridbosses. They are meant to backup up to a 200A service and you can parallel multiple inverters in the Gridboss
@danmccoy6164Ай бұрын
As far as the generator goes why don't you just use it to charge the batteries. And have the house power from the batteries only? Or batteries and solar when it's available.?
@RockyBroadSolarLLCАй бұрын
That would be the setup if you connected the generator directly to the batteries using the EG4 Chargeverter.

I actually think a new trend is beginning. Instead of hybrid, people are starting to go with off-grid inverters like the 12000xp, but grid connected for battery charging and bypass only. No selling back, I'll keep all my produced energy in my eg4 batteries. It's been the dream of many for many years. It's what the late Jack Rickard callled the 'selfish solar system'. You really don't want to get involved in an agreement with your electric company. They may buy your electricity for a cent or two today, but that won't last much longer. They are already ending agreements narionwide due to surplus. They are beginning to see. the writing on the wall, and they don't like what they see. They are in the business of selling energy, and the thought of customers making their own scares the hell out of them. They will come for our panels and batteries one day, so I'll try to stay off their radar until then.

@TheMalbroughs I hear you loud and clear. The energy independence revolution is coming quick and they are going everything in their power to stop it. Thanks for watching the channel!
