+Thomas Speranza Not entirely sure but at a guess, Pikachu UpB clanked with Fox Uptilt in the middle of its jump, causing the moves to cancel each other. Pikachu retains his momentum from the move because it canceled before the frames where he stops at the end. Then he decelerates to his Air speed as he flies across the stage.

+An Average Pichu 2 Frames actually :P Its really just muscle memory at some point if you do it over and over. Just look at any highly technical Fox/Falco: They also do a lot of (near) frame perfect inputs in quick succession, which obviously is notably harder than simply shorthopping. Practise it and it shouldnt be a problem anymore :-)

Two frames of jumpsquat=one frame to input it and remove your finger/thumb before it becomes a fullhop, at least assuming it works the same way as Smash 4. I much prefer Marth and Young Link to Pikachu, anyway. Aside from preferring sword characters, their jumpsquat is more manageable.

They do it for the ledge invincibility while they wait for the other guy's respawn invincibility to go away. It's the safest place to be for a lot of characters, unless you mess up.
