Duck's Samus is amazing, but I feel like Leffen shouldn't have given up that last stock. He was only down by a little bit, and a comeback was absolutely possible there. It's nice to see a Samus player that's this good though. I've been trying to get my fix now that Plup is playing Sheik more often.

+Huy Nguyen Leffen is really good at knowing when and how to get those up smash kills with Fox. This is why he's so good against Puff and Peach. Unlike those characters, Samus dies somewhere around 100% with up smash.. Also Duck is just really good at neutral. He beat Westballz in this tourny and was winning lots of games vs Mango at the summit during friendlies from what I heard.

So many approaches from almost directly above. Leffen, Samus is the last character you want to try that against, all she wants to do is WD out of the way (or cc). Block her tilts and punish or dash dance more or something, lol. Leffen also reacted very poorly do Samus using a bomb to stall in the air onstage, chased her completely wrong. Good on Duck escaping drills, and just reacting to Leffen doing unsafe things well in general. Bad on Leffen for running into so many hitboxes.

Leffen missed a lot of opportunities to punish Samus at low percent, but he cc rolled instead of cc up smash, as well as a lot of waveshine up smashes. It looks like he respected Duck too much.

I don't think Leffen still has a Samus problem. After practicing with Plup after Dreamhack and playing in friendlies against Duck, it's hard to believe Leffen wouldn't learn the match up right now. It looked to me he was tilted from still losing against Axe and had a mental block about losing to Samus. You could see how he kept fishing for those up smashes even though he wasn't getting them. I think it was more of his mind set going into this match than his ability to actually play the match up.

+Nicolas Frasson Except you rarely actually see fox v. Fox dittos in grand finals. Mango traditionally plays falco. Only Armada v. Leffen is a guaranteed fox ditto. But other than that, M2k plays sheik/Marth, plup is samus/sheik, PPMD (if he comes back) math/falco, Ballz is Falco, etc etc. S2J and Wizzy consistently place top 8. The Foxiness is a bigger problem outside the top 10 methinks, you see a decent variety. And do NOT tell me that all foxes are the same, most are entertaining to watch for their own reasons (at the top level of play, again. I agree with you when it comes to lower-level players). I respect Hbox, and appreciate his contributions, but I do not want to see him in Grand Finals anymore. I say this as a Sheik main. Melee is mostly about personalities, characters, and the beauty of the game is that characteristics translate to the game. The Fox-problem is over-exagerrated.

Samus is a really tricky character, due to her amazing recovery, great hitboxes, and great projectiles. In my opinion, you want an airborne Samus because (1) her up air is near useless and her fair and bair are situational & (2) she has a very slow falling speed. Because of this, this makes her in-air game limited and unsafe. Nair is really good at calling out late followups, but she is very vulnerable from the top of her head to her back. Just wait/bait out the falling nair, then get her. In general, an aerial-spamming Samus is easy money. Also, try noticing if the Samus is grab-happy or dash-attack based in the neutral. Her dash attack is a bad approach, similar to Falcon and Ganon's Dash Attack

AllBassPromoter Samus's upair isn't useless. It can combo into nair or fair mid jump, and can be used to drag people down landing, or to poke through a platform. Poking side platforms with bair is a lot easier and less situational than you may think, and it can be combo'd into. With that said, she does suck in the air when not comboing, and you do want her in the air if she's your opponent. Dash attack is less bad if done such that it connects on the opposite side of the opponent it started on, since it launches her further away. More importantly, none of her tilts are actually safe on shield, her Smash attacks don't even come close to safe, and her jab needs to be spaced well for jab pressure to not suck. Getting in close and dropping bombs (the remaining safe pro-active approach thing she can do) is actually really hard if not backed up by a missile, and missile spam is trivial when the opponent learns to aerial them, or hit them with a long ranged tilt. Moreover, Samus can just bomb when there isn't a true followup on her to gain drift to try to escape while also covering herself. Much better than nair for escape unless they see you jumping into them. Duck actually did that in this set, but Leffen also responded completely incorrectly to the direction Duck went to escape. Samus's real flaws are that her offense isn't legitimately safe (and doesn't even come close without superb spacing), and she loses out to shield as well as camping. Meanwhile, her defensive options are all extremely high commitment (everything out of shield except wavedash) or otherwise extremely punishable. She's forced to win neutral over and over and has a hard time starting a combo without the opponent making a huge error. The only Samus player I've ever seen successfully create their own openings to get damage and not rely on the opponent making mad decisions to start punishes was Plup, really.

1000g2g3g4g800999 thanks for giving a more detailed analysis of Samus. My knowledge of Samus is fairly limited, so I can't really give that in-depth or experienced perspective. Looking back to when I saw Samus's frame data, I do remember that she does not really have safe-on-shield options. Up air isn't that useless, but I find it hard to land all the hits (not like that makes it bad). Bair isn't that situational, but in the air, it is not a safe move to come down with imo. Then again, I only really know her well from a technical, so my ideas lack some information. I do think that she's one of the most deep, yet somewhat undeveloped characters in the game. She's pretty underrated and unique.

I have a hard time respecting Leffen as a player. I understand his villain/vegeta complex is "good for the community" but I hate how he gives up and throws away matches when he assumes that he's going to lose. He doesn't just do that because he's tired or knows he going to lose, he wants to take away the satisfaction of victory from his opponent and cushion the blow of his loss. It totally sucks the hype from the match and leaves both his opponent and the audience unsatisfied.

+Jordan Cornwell A lot of players run off the stage or quit out when they know it's over. Mew2king does it a lot and so does Mang0. Sometimes people just aren't feeling it or get on tilt or demoralized, and can't continue. It's all a part of the mental aspect of Melee. Leffen couldn't handle Duck's momentum, and he gave up. It's not his "villainy" or "to take away the satisfaction of victory", it's because Leffen is human and he lost confidence.

Look at the times he's lost to samus: Evo vs plup: he'd lost to druggedfox beforehand This tournament set: he'd lost to axe beforehand Dreamhack vs duck: he'd lost to westballz beforehand Leffen either places like 7th or he gets top 3/2 or even first. His mental state in Melee is almost as bad as mew2king's. He gets 4 stocked almost as much he does, has just about as short losers runs as he does, gets messed up by things he doesn't understand like he does, etc.
