The funny thing is years later Arin starts playing Majoras mask and tries to follow the formula that ocarina of time gave even though the game was mainly sidequest heavy and doesn't want you to play it like you would ocarina of time.

Arin is so busy trying to prove a point that every 3D Zelda is bad or the same thing as OoT (excluding BoTW) that he tries to brute force his way from point A to point B only stopping t talk about how bad and linear it is when a game is open or in the case of SS get lost on a path that is on 1 side a straight line to you goal and on the other a shortcut to an earlier location for if you come back to the begining instead of using a later on bird statue then he runs around for 3+ episodes complaining that the game holds your hand to much while struggling over 45-60 minutes to find something that will take most people about 10 minutes to find bc he's so busy complaining that the game doesn't let you figure things out and when it does it's in an "unintuitive way" Arin thinks that being told that there is a switch hidden in a room isn't a puzzle even though it's what all Zelda's do In 3D Zelda's they hide them out of sight and make you look around for them in ALttP they are usually under pots or skulls or something else that hides it from the players vision so you have to look around
@Devilfish66662 жыл бұрын
@@alexskocy9948 Its like with Castlevania, he played part 1 and Zelda 1 and since then thinks every Zelda/Castlevania has to be like that but the games switched their main genre pretty much after part 1. LotP and Castlevania 2 and later are no longer adventures/linear jump n runs. Zelda went more towards adventure-RPG and Castlevania went towards Metroidvania but that is not inherently bad, its just a taste thing. The things he says about Z-targeting for example are all true, clunky and sloppy but when he starts talking about the story its just a taste thing...dialogue in a game isnt inherently a bad thing but for him it is since its "not what Zelda 1 was like". @@sloppyphart7879 That’s my point though, I don’t think he understood how anyone could enjoy them. Nowadays he’s mellowed out on a lot of these things, probably because he’s older and has less of a belief that everyone plays the same way he does. You can see that he generally makes less criticisms like this in GG episodes, and when he does, they’re more presented as obligatory gestures to be funny that always end in (essentially) “but whatever though-if you can enjoy it, good for you.” He’s more willing today to view his opinions on game design as opinions rather than fact-which, if you liked his habit of ruffling feathers, makes him a little more boring, but it does definitely make him more palatable to people who think differently about games.

Maybe a controversial take, but Zelda isn't really about exploring and hasn't been since the NES games. It's become about exploring again with BOTW and TOTK, but for most of its run, the main gameplay of the series has not revolved around exploring. It's mainly about going to specific locations and solving puzzles there, and completing some levels. I don't even think OoT pretends to be about exploration, it's pretty blatantly guiding you from one dungeon to the next. The fact that people love the game in spite of that tells me that you probably shouldn't judge it as an exploration type game. It should be reviewed on its own merits.
@Null88992 ай бұрын
Thats.... kind of the point of the video?

I'd say much of what he says still stands when looking at Ocarina in isolation. Definitely not a perfect game, and its wrinkles in how it tries to translate Zelda into 3D get ironed out (more or less) in its sequels. Even taken on its own, I still think the game is a bit bloated and, at times, lacking in good pacing in its second half. I think the massive asterisk to Ocarina's name is that it was really the first of its kind in 3D, and the fact that it got a lot right on its first try is incredible... ... But that said, this video is entirely about removing Ocarina from the context of its time, seeing how well it stacks up today when _compared_ to its brethren. I think it would be a little narrow-minded to try and encircle Ocarina and other 3D entries in their own bubble of "different," when they bare the name of the series and still attempt at loosely following the exploration/combat template set by Ocarina. Especially after Breath of the Wild, I think Arin was on the right track when he essentially questions just how "Zelda" is Ocarina of Time? Considering they trended the series back to the roots of the series with the last couple of entries (though I think TOTK was far less successful at that), Ocarina's shadow over the series needed some productive rethinking.

I mean when Arin says stupid stuff without justifying it or giving a good example and Dan just takes his word for it, like with sonic Arin is very rarely fair with Sonic, and I know that most of his games aren't great but he never gives a good reason why he clumps all the games together when he doesn't even give the original trilogy a chance. Dan just agrees with him when he knows nothing about Sonic. An example of someone being fair with sonic even when they don't really like him would be Vinny from Vinesauce. Vinny said that he disliked sonic as a kid because the commercials for genesis told him how to hate and he could never really get into Sonic because of those experiences. Despite that he still gave Sonic a chance by playing through Sonic 3 and Knuckles with Imakuni, and by the end he said that he really enjoyed it.

Back here after TOTK. Gotta say, they did what Arin wanted in BOTW and only expanded on them now. Cave exploration, it’s own take on the dark world/future world, and they made our dungeon companions super useful. When the Sages in Ocarina gave us their seals, they said we got their power… but no we did not. Now the Sages have unique abilities and fight along side you. This Sequelitis criticisms were fixed and exceeded imho. Edit: Oh and like BOTW they have actual puzzles that army whacking a diamond or shooting an eyeball. And they’re FUN! I hate when I find a “Rauru’s Gift” shrine where all I did was find it in a cave. That’s not hard. At least have me carry the crystal thru the cave. Other than that, they’re all fun!

It's like delirious rambling from point to point with no coherence. At one point he complains that... you come across locked doors and need to explore to find a key. At other points, he claims there's no exploration in the game, which leads me to think he doesn't know what exploration means or that games with linear sequences of events can still have it. It's honestly shocking how well OoT holds up. The pacing and world design are picture-perfect, and the rest of the series can't really touch it in those regards.

I am a big fan of Arin Hanson whoever there is something that must be said of this video. This is just Arin being biased. He obviously likes a link to the past better since by his own words he hates being told what to do in game. A link to the past is arguably worse since they straight up tell you which one to go next while on ocarina of time its just the first 3 that get the railroady treatment. By his own critique of the game the original Legend of Zelda is the best game since you could go anywhere yet he keeps comparing it to a link to the past. Not to mention that he is obviously playing the game wrong. The closest I would compare it to is to trying to play a Souls game with a shield, its doable but it will increase the waiting time longer since that time could've been used to advance the state of whatever fight you are currently doing. Sad thing is he will never read this since he has gone on record that he doesnt read comments anymore, but it had to be said. Thanks to whoever took the time to read this hope you had a nice day.

Its scary how many people think everything he says is accurate. edit: examples: 7:00- He Calls Z targeting in OoT a bad thing for not being able to target enemies while simultaneously exploring the room. You're still able to explore the room while targeting enemies by strafing around an enemy, but it makes sense to want to focus on the immediate threat before looking around. 7:44- He implies that a monster falling on him from a higher floor is an unfair situation, but the player can hear that monster making noise on the higher floor meaning its close by and is trying to get to you from the one opening it has access to. There's nothing unfair about the example he showed. 7:48- He claims that Z targeting makes enemies like bats less fun to fight in large numbers. He fails to realize that situations like that were made for the Deku Nuts which can stun nearby enemies giving you a chance to kill them all at once. Instead of thinking of a better strategy he blamed the game for it. 8:20- He says that every enemy in OoT has a period where they do nothing and attacking during this time is useless. Stalfos, Wolfos and Clams are the only enemies in the game that force you to wait for an opening. Every other enemy can be attack immediately or is weak to at least one item. So hes wrong about Scrubs, Lizolofs, Skulltulas and Gerudos. 12:40- He shows multiple clips of him being hit from behind by a trap and calls it bad design, but when playing the game you can see where the trap is going to be in every one of his examples. Failing to avoid them is the players fault, not that games. 16:50- He says there's a lot of waiting in OoT and gives examples of doors closing(its less then a second), for a character to stop talking (you can skip through their dialogue boxes), for instructions to an item in a chest(again, you can skip pasted it instantly), for a short cut-scene to show you what effect you're last action had on the room (not having this would be frustrating), getting up after being knocked down (again, less then a second), bombs blowing up (shortening that would be hazardous to the users health) 17:05- He makes an unfair comparison to switching worlds in OoT Vs ALTTP. In OoT its more time consuming then it needs to be, but you only have to do it three times in the entire game, once when you get the master sword for the first time, once for the 'under the well' mini-dungeon and once for the child portion of the Spirit temple. In ALTTP you're doing it all the time in specific spots and it can often force you back for being on top of something in the other world. They're too different to make a direct comparison.

I've been thinking a lot about this video since I first saw it, because it is a fantastic example of Arin's duality. On the one hand, he can make fantastic, intelligent arguments. On the other hand, he is incapable of separating his arguments from his own bias at times. Arin's most consistent failing as a critic of game design, I think, is that he builds entire critiques on the foundation that games which place an emphasis on player discovery and more free-form gameplay are inherently better than more guided experiences. Except, they're not inherently better. It's simply his preference. There's something to be said for experiencing an artist's exact vision, the same way we do with film and literature. It is still art, and you still have the freedom to interpret it in your own way whether or not the pixels on the screen have the same freedom as in other games. Again, I get it. It's not Arin's thing, and that's fine. How many times have we heard Danny chide him for never, ever reading? How many times has Danny been surprised at the movies Arin hasn't seen? He'd probably scoff at me comparing games and books to each other because he wants to experience his entertainment in a way where he has full control to create his own story. He really, really doesn't want a story told to him, or an experience meticulously designed for him to go through in a specific manner. Doesn't matter how good it is. Again, that's fine because everybody has their preferences. It's not a solid foundation to critique anything, though. Essentially, Arin makes the mistake that separates good critics from bad ones. He Judges a game based on what it is vs what he wants it to be, rather than how well it achieved what it was actually trying to do. He criticizes Ocarina for being less open than the previous games, and for telling you where to go, completely dismissing the fantastic art, music, deeper combat, and dungeon/puzzle design. The combat makes him wait a little bit, so it's worse even though it's better (what?). The puzzle elements don't all fit in your eyeballs at once, so the puzzles are worse. Does he lack object permanence? The disparate puzzle elements and vertical, layered dungeons of Ocarina are precisely why those puzzles are more satisfying to me. You had to actually remember shit as you went along, trying to keep everything that you knew did something in mind while you saw new things that, might, have a connection with it. Most importantly, it doesn't let him wander around an over-world forever, trying to find the next dungeon and discovering secrets that rely on sheer luck to find, so it's not as good as the the first game, or even LTTP. To him, player discovery and agency trumps everything. Which is totally fine, as long as he knows it's a preference and not an objective quality upon which to critique a game, which...he doesn't always seem to. Certainly not in this video.
@MediRon9 жыл бұрын
ForeverMasterless i think what arin meant with the combat thing is that it is better, it is just poorly implemented in oot though i agree with everything else you said, hell i play a lot of jrpgs and wrpgs and i can tell you that that jrpgs are not as open ended as wrpgs and focus more on the story and shit while wrpgs focus on the world and exploring but neither is inherently better than the other and i love both genres
@MarcoTalin129 жыл бұрын
From the first sequelitis (castlevania 1 vs 2), I'd say that your assumption that Arin's bias is towards free form exploration isn't quite accurate. The whole free form thing comes from the context of "Zelda games", which is why he starts this LttP vs OoT video with neither of those games, but with the first Zelda, which is a very unguided game that relies on the player's desire to explore for most of its progression. The video details the slow progression of Zelda games from a wide-open "choose where you want to go" exploration set-up to a series of set pieces and challenges for a player to clear, culminating in what Arin believes to be the representation of this progression: Skyward Sword. "Is it better? Is it worse? I dunno, but it's not the same!"
@pakapakapaka9 жыл бұрын
ForeverMasterless "He criticizes Ocarina for being less open than the previous games, and for telling you where to go, completely dismissing the fantastic art, music" 4:24 He did touch on the graphics and music. Or were you stating that he didn't go into enough detail about how good it is? "deeper combat" 6:28 pretty clear detail about the combat. and just in case you missed where he says something good about the combat 9:29 "Dungeon/puzzle design" 11:30 It seems that everyone only noticed when he spoke poorly about the game, and not the good things he mentioned. Also, He loves ALTTP, but he did critique it as well 2:00 People need to understand that to truly love a game, you must acknowledge its flaws and embrace them, not ignore them like it doesn't exist. I love FFVIII, The Drawing system (although new and innovative, and genuinely a cool idea) sucks, The tutorials all over the first 3 hours of the game, The Junction system is dumb and the characters rely on it too much (same with the GFs), The Stupid Queen of cards, and many more...I still love FFVIII
@ForeverMasterless9 жыл бұрын
pakapakapaka I'm not saying it's a flawless game, or that he didn't throw it a couple (very small) bones. I'm saying ALL of his critiques are based on this idea that play agency and discovery trump everything else, no matter what, at all times. They're all coming from that place, and it's a flawed starting point. I find combat in LTTP boring, and the hitboxes are fucked. I'm much more likely to feel like I got a cheap hit on me in that game than Ocarina. But, yeah, I guess you don't have to wait for an opening ever and you can can kill bats multiple at a time, so that proves how it's better, right? Arin really just comes across here as an impatient gamer, using his own preferences as a basis for critique, and lauding his favorite game while decrying a sequel that wasn't made with his exact tastes in mind. It's quite annoying.
@ForeverMasterless9 жыл бұрын
For anyone that wants to see a FAIR review of Ocarina that still pinpoints every flaw, go seek out Mattewmatosis' review on youtube. Arin himself mentioned liking the guy, which is how I know about him, but he's a million goddamn times better at it than Arin could ever hope to be, and Arin would probably even agree with that.

I notice that most of arin's complaints seem to be, for the most part, fixed in Breath of the Wild. Open world, free exploration, no nagging companions, Story isn't forcing you to do things in certain orders, No waiting to attack enemies, a real sense of adventure, and a different item mechanic and dungeon mechanic Edit: Years later, after becoming an actual adult and having a better sense of my own opinions, as well as finally being able to look past nostalgia, I actually agree with Arin a good bit. I’m not with him trashing 3D zelda. But me personally, I like the higher sense of adventure, discovery and freedom that 2D zeldas bring. 3D zelda is great of course. But I see those being better at telling more straightforward, linear stories, rather than being an adventurous explorative experience. But that’s just me

How Breath of the Wild is fixed 4:52-Breath of the Wild let’s you take full advantage of the 3D space, allowing you to climb almost surface or glide practically everywhere. Also link can jump for the first time in 3D Zelda. 7:02-Now you can change the camera angle freely. 7:14-You can either actively search out enemies to fight to get the treasures in their camps, or they serve as obstacles to your exploration. 8:20-Enemies can now do a lot of the these Link can do, like using the same weapons, jumping, dodging, using shields, and shooting arrows, which creates a balance between the environment and the player. And you can see how much health they have left, so you know how long the battle will take, and you don’t even have to finish the battle to progress most of the time. 9:53-You can now use your surroundings to your advantage. You shoot down lanterns to set off explosive barrels, drop down boulders from above, find strategic cover, swing around metal objects as weapons, or knock enemies off of cliffs. 11:30- The shrines in Breath of the Wild are all about puzzle solving, and similar to what Egoraptor was talking about in his Megaman Sequelitis, they teach you how to solve them and teach you the mechanics of the game without anyone having to tell you. 13:10-Traversing obstacles feels way more realistic and perilous now with Breath of the Wild’s real physics and 100% open-worldness. 14:05-You now have an infinite amount of bombs, and you can choose when they go off, and whether they should roll around or stay in one place. 14:50-Chests are now opened immediately with no build up. The only build up is whenever you get a new rune, and that’s only ever going to happen a total of 4 times in the first couple hours, and then never again. 16:46-Even if there is long cutscenes, there are hours of pure gameplay in between. 18:00-The bosses in Breath of the Wild are a bit more along the lines of games like Dark Souls, but the item you use can help the battle be easier instead of it being required. So you can kill them in any way you want. 19:05-Holes in the ground are replaced by the shrines, which are all unique mini-dungeons that teach you the mechanics of the games and give you worthwhile treasure, and are fun to search for and find. 20:00-The story is VERY present in Breath of the Wild, and it’s fantastic. BUT, more importantly, it doesn’t restrict your gameplay in any way other than being confined to the first area. But that first area is already bigger than literally the entirety of Ocarina of Time. 21:40-The game and story are paced so that by the time you want to go start exploring the next area, it’s already what you’re supposed to do anyway, and even if can’t go there yet, there’s still plenty for you to do in the areas you CAN enter. 22:18-Link can now climb practically any natural or textured surface. 22:34-After a couple of hours, you can actually go straight to the final boss if you wished. Anything involving in the main quest after that point is more of a suggestion, meaning that no one is forcing you to follow the game the way it’s meant to be followed. 23:23-The ability to explore is triggered by exploring. 24:21-Nintendo has gone on record several times saying that Breath of the Wild is all about revisiting the roots of Zelda. And that’s exactly what they’ve done. 25:09-Nintendo has gone through a lot of effort to keep us in the dark about a lot of things in Breath of the Wild, and going into as soon as it launched, practically no one knew what was going to happen right from the get go. 27:52- The runes in Breath of the Wild replace items and can be used to manipulate the environment to fight enemies, and all weapons have other uses like starting fires or cutting down trees. In Conclusion, Breath of the Wild is probably the best game Nintendo has made so far, and undoubtedly the Game of the Year. P.S- Hyrule Warriors is really fucking fun

I think if there's one thing BOTW neglected to carry over from the original tho, it was caves. Shrines are a good step in the right direction, but they lack that sense of mystique and wonder, because you generally know what you're gonna get when you walk in one. A blue-misty puzzle room. When it comes to a cave, you just wonder "what's in there?? A mini boss? A puzzle? A treasure chest?"

Some of the shrines puzzles are pretty vague, but I do think Nintendo did a lot to make the game the best it can be, as much as they could. Although I have to say, the main dungeons might have had more work into them. It felt... Short? Interesting, but short. Though the bosses were pretty cool, I mostly used a bow and arrows, and a weapon rather than using a specific weapon like bombs... But also pretty underwhelming to me. I agree with Mayeur, though. You kinda start expect at least 1 chest with something from rupees to weapons, a special thing, a puzzle from a shrine (or a shrine quest) once you go through a lot of them. On a kinda related note, when you fight certain enemies that seem like a miniboss, say a Lynel or a Hinox, you expect gear and materials. I can think of 1 thing that surprised me when I played the game, but I think that's like. The only thing I was surprised by.
