Well I mean just from watching the video he listed: 1. Graphical improvement from NES Mega Man to the pixel art in Mega Man X 2. Very smart mechanical communication (in movement, attacking, enemies, platforming, optional collectibles, etc) 3. Intro Stage does a fantastic job in laying the structure for the entire game 4. Motivation (mainly mechanically, unless you *really* care about the narrative, all the power to you) very early on to progress and master the game 5. Great Level design in general And so on. I’m pretty sure he meant to only share about conveying to the player what the game is, it’s mechanics, and why you should keep playing, all while not forcing it. Plus, this was partially satirical, not entirely informative; he made a funny video that also talks about his favorite game. Rock hard dicks

The best example to describe how Arin plays games is a puzzle game he did where you had to do the opposite of the rules. The rule said "be careful" inna room full of vases which obviously meant you needed to break the vases. Arin immediately broke them all and then went "I wonder what that rule meant." It's like his subconscious picks up on good game design even when he doesn't realize it.

Developers feel the need to include a tutorial because they think they might have added an element to their game that's alien to usual game mechanics. Having the option to skip tutorials would be nice to get right into the game, but wouldn't it be annoying to be hindered in a game because there was something you didn't know from the developer's tutorial?

I've seen some people accuse Arin of lying when he said this gets showed in some game design classes. I didn't think he was lying but I thought maybe it was only s few classes. I was wrong. My friend takes a game design class and not only did they watch this in class, they watched the whole sequelitis series, had a quiz based on them and had to write their own where they compared a good sequel of their choice to the original and one where they compared a bad one of their choice to the original. This is what I really liked about Super Mario 3D World. The game was so fucking simple. It was like, "Bowser captured these Sprixies. You gotta go save em" BOOM!! NO FUCKING TUTORIALS ABOUT HOW TO USE THESE GOD DAMN CLEAR PIPES. THERE'S NO GOD DAMN TUTORIALS HOW TO CLIMB UP FUCKING WALLS. THERE'S NO ANNOYING CHARACTERS ALWAYS TALKING EVERY FIVE SECONDS BECAUSE IM PRETTY SURE THE WAS ONE SPEECH BUBBLE IN THE ENTIRE GAME. That game was, probably, the most perfect Mario game of modern times when it comes to bringing back the classics. I mean, yeah, there were tutorials on how to do some stuff like ride Plessie, but there were very few tutorials and my god the game was just perfect. I know we're talking about Megaman, but c'mon? Who doesn't agree? I mean, when you get the lamp, you don't see a message saying "You use this thing to kill these fat-ass ghost creatures" NO. YOU SEE THE LIGHT AND ASSUME "SHIT, MAYBE THESE CAN KILL THE GHOSTS" they make you think about that.... Maybe 3D World's lack of tutorials, dialouge is what Arin likes about it so much, as well as it being simple. But hey, that's just me.

On Shadow Man's "revisited" stage Arin proceeds to get his skull caved in repeatedly by a Hammer Joe because the ceiling is too low to jump over the hammers and he never realizes the game wants him to slide under them while returning fire. Honestly the way Arin went through the process of what a new player would more or less do on first introduction to the intro stage is pretty accurate to how it was for me. Mega Man X was my first ever time playing a Mega Man game, so I had no idea what I was doing at all, and eventually figured out what I needed to do just by playing that stage

You know, these Sequelitis videos really are some of the most in depth game analyses one can find on KZbin. Wish there were more, but I wouldn't want you to rush them if it affected the quality. Megaman X was one of the best games of my childhood SNES days. Games these days give you all these buttons to work with, but there are a lot of modern games in which there are mediocre controls, a weird inability to step over a curb, and if there is a jump it isn't affected by how hard you press the button. . I've known some dumb gamers, but hell, some of those people still figure stuff out in games the old fashioned way. Maybe it's the economy and developers trying to push games out in under a year's development time.

i seriously desire more quiet tutorials in modern games. i don't want the game to pause and read me a short paragraph on how a mechanic works. half life 2 does tutorials so well. a little prompt comes up that will say "use e to pick up objects" and you see some boxes that you can figure out for yourself you can stack up and you understand physics puzzles will be a part of the game. it feels good to figure that out for yourself and not be barraged with a paragraph of information or a cutscene.

There is one thing you forgot to mention. When you attack the Mavericks with the weapon that they are weakest against, it does more than damage them more, it also fucks up their attack patterns. Like when you hit Spark Mandrill with the shotgun ice. It freezes him and he has to break out.
