I’ve looked at several homes recently which did not have enough bedrooms to fit our family size, and have often wondered what it would take to add an egress window in the basement. Great how-to video on the in’s and out’s of adding. Thanks! For those commenting on “why would someone do this”, you can’t resell a home and include the basement square footage and/or bedroom without a 2nd exit from said room/area. An egress window allows you to count both, thus increasing your homes value. Very worth it if you’re taking the time and money to finish out a basement.

Would a hatchway count? I thought egress windows were bigger. Like a standard door sized opening and stairs in the well to easily get out. My hatchway is basically the same size as this opening. We built a room in our basement and the hatchway exit is in that space, which is why I'm asking.

When he drops the Ramset and his son gives the thumbs up....hilarious! Because the narration continues absolutely normally. Its this contrast that makes it so very funny. This is something easy to do but very rarely done on online videos. Whoever thought of this combination is a comedic genius. And the video offers great how-to info as well!

Suggestion put the drain at dirt level. Use a good quality landscape fabric over the dirt and the drain. Then put your rock I use river rock. If the drain is higher then the dirt it fills up the space until it can exit through the drain. And I also wrap the drain and down the pipe a little. It keeps sediment out better.

I'll be helping my son do this over the summer, and I definitely take your advice and hire a team to cut the concrete.One point I would change on your install; I would have used a water based foundation mastic on the concrete before the tape, (clean concrete, mastic, dry, tape, dry, trim) and then another coat after tape then trim after it's all cured. So a quick tip for finishing up the concrete saw cut , buy a masonry diamond tip blade for your angle grinder since your at Lowe’s buying all this other stuff . Saves on drilling and chiseling the wall I’ve found not all concrete is made the same. And because the chisel worked at your place it might not at others , and an angle crack could go the other way removing more foundation then you want lol . With the angle grinder you get a 2” depth cut to create a really nice score line for breaking the wall

If I had to guess, you were having trouble with the tapcon screws because you weren't drilling deep enough holes. It helps to run the bit in and out a couple of times when you are done drilling as well to clean out dust. If dust compresses in the bottom of the hole it won't allow the screw all the way in.

I had a carpenter install a new window and water proceeded to run out by what appears to be deteriorating rough opening. I'm all for DIY but I really hope you checked with a structural engineer before you did this project. Usually, when you create a larger egress of that size you compromise the integrity of the foundation. I didn't see you install any additional supports other than the wood frame for the window. Looks pretty, but that load on the wall when the soil gets wet is concerning now.

Good point, but fortunately it's only a few inches removed on the left and right (vertical doesn't matter as much since I assume the window already had some sort of lintel support? I hope?). So hopefully this won't be catastrophic.

I have a Q: The frame for your window is 2x material. Looking at the top of that, and knowing you made the window wider, should you not have made a header there, since the house is literally resting on it? I am looking for education, not harping. I mean, I did exactly this to my house, but didn't make the window wider-just deeper, and I have a block foundation (the 2 differences that prompted me to watch yours). Also, I didn't hire concrete guys, and it was cut by hand. Not as pretty, but framed up fine. Really not a problem at all, but again, block wall; it was cut in about 5 minutes. Brings me to a Q#2: Anyone do this task (poured, not block) without the saw on rails?
@BirchManagementLLC
@BirchManagementLLC 6 ай бұрын
I install the header up in the floor system paralleling the existing rim board. I also install the window a little lower to give room for trim across the top of the window at the time of basement finishing. I have a hand held saw for cutting this opening.

@@glenjamindle I don't think you guys understand that style of that window does not accept or need a drip cap. The flange is a built-in drip cap, you could run a water hose straight on the top of that window and it would not enter. I definitely would have put some type of sealant behind the flange though.
