I have been four times in Egypt and made several train travels, - eg Kairo - Alexandria twice, Kairo - Luxor twice, Kairo - Assuan Nighttrain twice. My first trip in that country was more than 40 years in very old GANZ sleeping coaches from Hungary……..you have to love that country and its railways!!!😅

A couple of other African trains that you may want to look into for future videos are the chinese built Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway in Kenya, The Al-Boraq bullet train in Morroco, The Gautrain from Pretoria to Johannesburg in South Africa, and the Train Express Regional Dakar-AIBD in Senegal
@SeverityOne

There is a short article on the English (and Dutch) Wikipedia about the Senegal train, and a much longer one in French. Time to dust off my secondary education French... Africa is a big place, so it'd have to be worth it for him to go there. But in South Africa, he could also take the legendary Blue Train. But it's not cheap. I looked it up, and the most luxurious accommodation is around 45,000 Rand. You have to divide by 20 to get the amount in EUR/USD/GBP. €2200 or so might be stretching it a bit. And because he's always talking about "we", you'd have to double that.

I understand it as well, and while I don’t think it’s okay by any means, the tourist prices are still reasonable in relation what most people would be used to from their home country for the same class and distance. I’m Swedish and you can easily pay twice that price for a second class ticket between two major cities here and a journey of a few hours. A one way ticket for me to go to Gothenburg (40 minutes by train) is I think around €9 now or even more and that’s with using the travel card for the regional traffic (you top it up and your ticket prices are discounted when paying with the travel card vs using your phone or bank card to pay for the same trip)

why is it not okay?! its okay because in egypt the government subsidize tickets for egyptians. respectfully why would it subsidize tickets for foreigners? what foreigners pay is the fair price its just that alot of services in egypt are subsidized so that Egyptians can afford them. A little clarification is that Sidi Gaber station isn't in the outskirts at all, it is pretty much a central station as well as Alexandria Main station and may even be considered more central than Alexandria Main station itself, given that usually most passengers get on/off from Sidi Gaber rather than the main station itself.

P.S. I’m glad you ended the video with a bit of the harbor of Alex. I enjoy your videos. They’re informative and delightful in that you don’t egotistically yak away like on so many others. You asked about experiences on Egyptian Railways. In the late 70s and then again the the 80s I took the train, second class, to Aswan and Luxor. Then, spitting and smoking in the carriages were de rigueur. Weeks ago, no smoking, at least in first class. Alex is wonderful. The country is so poor because everyone is in the thousands of cafés smoking shisha and not working. Again, such wonderful people, up in the top five for me out of the 80 to 90 that I’ve visited.

I have seen KZbinrs being harassed for filming in Egypt by officials even when they are actually promoting the good sides of Egypt. Many more things like that. I've ridden the old regular express trains of ENR a lot (the "Spanish" trains as they were confusingly called, not the "Turbini"). The Talgo is definitely a huge improvement and it looks like Ramses station has also had a really deep makeover from when I last saw it - things are definitely finally moving for ENR. They've needed a proper upgrade for a while, and it's great to see they're getting it. Sadly, I think the ride quality and slow speed is symptomatic of the dilapidated state of the track infrastructure. There are supposedly plans for a high speed network underway, but the choices of routes for it seem a tad eccentric to be brutally honest, and I think for now ENR would be best focused on rehabilitating their existing track first of all, or restricting the initial HSR route to Cairo-Alex, rather than the long and economically dubious route from Ain Sokhna to Mersa Matruh.

they are renewing the tracks actually in that route, it will increase in speed. i don't understand how is the route from ain sokhna to marsa matruh econonmically dubious? the order from siemens won't just be commuter trains, there are also freight trains for the carrying of goods between the meditarnean and red sea. cairo alex doesn't make sense as high speed honestly not that many egyptians will use it

When i wanted to buy tickets in the Cairo station, there was a huge queue, that was standing still, no tickets were sold, but everybody still waited there, it turned to be the queue for locals, they were waiting for the opportunity to get some tickets in some future, they couldn't tell when they're ride will be. When they spotted me as a foreigner, they took me inside ticket office from a side door, and sold me a ticket for the train that left a couple of hour later, they explained me that they promote tourism, therefore foreigners can have a ticket at once

The bureaucrats must have been talking to the Indians, though at least in India there’s no foreign price on the trains, only parks, etc. The main hall in the Cairo Ramses RR Station is most impressive, a real art deco gem. The Egyptians are a lovable bunch. If only they could deal with the rubbish as the Prophet Mohammed ( PBUH) implored.

Wow fantastic vlog, love the Cairo train station! A few things, the tracks need replaced with modern ones (I guess the continuous welded type?) The seats looked incredible even in Second Class! Wish they had wifi and the entertainment. Lastly about the price, I think its correct that they mark up the tickets for foreigners, $30 for 130 miles is okay! Try going by boat, or Taxi/Uber or take a flight and then tell me how long it would take and the cost would be huge! For a tourist or businessman visiting Egypt once or twice a year the cost is fine...Lastly, they do need new engines.

I disagree on the price purely because it is discrimination based on race. What if there should be a quid pro quo in countries that have extortionate train fares such as the UK to give "foreigners" a discounted fare - how well do you think that would go down with the locals?
@rowantharwat9195
@rowantharwat9195 Жыл бұрын
they are actually replacing the tracks . and for the price, its because egypt subsidize alot of sevices to egyptians, including train tickets
@rowantharwat9195
@rowantharwat9195 Жыл бұрын
@@Lakesider52 there is a big difference between discrimination and subsidizing services to your tax paying population who will never be able to pay the full price without the subsidies . last i checked the UK didn't have a huge population under the poverty line. BTW , students also get big discounts (egyptian and foreign), is that also 'discriminatory"??

I do agree that different prices for tourists will impact the attractiveness of this options. Yet, the tourist price is the 'actual' cost' + fair markup for most of this services according government releases. Most of these services, and Oil based products is subsidised by the government, e.g. 1L of premium gasoline in Egypt cost 0.29 Eur vs 1.90 Eur in countries like Germany. This difference comes to from taxpayers' pocket who are not obliged to pay for a non-taxpayer (Tourist). Egypt actually import some of its Oil at international rates, or loose the opportunity to sell its own production at the international rate.

Just an FYI, the reason why tourists pay more than locals is because the Egyptian transport network is subsidised through taxes. So locals pay less because their taxes fund the transport network to begin with. Taxes funding the network allows transport to be more accessible and affordable to everyone.

Maybe it’s a security/convenience fee. If a tourist gets attacked on a train, that’s a national disaster for the tourist industry, so they need extra security for the whole line to keep them safe. And they need English speaking staff around to make sure those tourists don’t get lost. Plus, there’s the assorted tourists who get drunk or graffiti things or ask too many questions about the government, but who can’t be exactly be processed through the normal Egyptian criminal system and need some delicate handling to avoid an international incident. All that special treatment costs money.

7:10 To be fair, everything has a big markup for foreigners, when you go to Egypt, it gets more expensive than traveling in Europe, sometimes. We needed to buy some medicine and they were asking my father 10 times more than the price - our guide started scolding the guy on behalf of my father and they sold it at a normal price.

Indian Railways experimented with these talgo coaches too . These coaches were sent by Spain for testing in India as they can run on both standard as well as broad gauge. But india rejected them due to capacity (2X 2 configuration) , short height (which didn’t match the platform height) and price of the train set …. Then it decided to launch Vande Bharat project …
