Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide © 2020 | Exploring the Nile Valley from north to south, we see the highlights of Egypt. In the fabled city of Alexandria, we venture through a market wonderland, smoke a shisha, and stroll a Mediterranean promenade. In Luxor, we explore the pharaohs’ tombs and temples before sailing on a timeless felucca. Then we kick back on a riverboat cruise, enjoying iconic views of palm trees, minarets, and rustic villages. Our finale: Ramesses II's magnificent temple at Abu Simbel. #ricksteves #egypt #luxor

No trip is complete without watching Rick Steve's travel documentries. Each word that he says has a meaning & he doesn't say anything that doesn't have a meaning. It's like reading a textbook. Everytime you watch his travel documentry again, you find new things which you had missed grasping last time.

When in Luxor, it might be more enjoyable to stay on the west bank. There are a few small hotels near the Valley of the Kings and Queens. It's quieter, with less traffic and people. The ferries to cross the Nile are cheap. The east side has the big temples and hotels, but it's also very crowded and noisy.

I got back a week ago and if you go take American or Euro $100s and $1s (like 100 of them). The $100s are tips for the tour guides and the $1s are tips for the bathroom attendants, trinket shops and airport porters. Make sure you get to the airport early. There are 4 checkpoints before you get to the airplane gate. The airport transportation guys did not understand that and would get us to the airport one hour before our flight. Thankfully, my sister that was with me is really pretty and she brought her US issued handicapped blue car sticker. We would show the sticker to the guard at the entry door. He would get her a wheelchair and wheel us to the front of the second check point line (first check point was getting onto the airport property which took up to 1/2 hour). That would save us so much time. We still needed to get our tickets from the ticket counter line and pass two other check point lines. I did feel safe.

Rick was taking a short flight from Aswan to Abu Simbel temple at the end. The rest of us poor tourist departed at 3am from hotel. Took the river ferry to cross from the Elephant island, hop on mini bus, transfer to a big bus, finally arrived at the temple around 7 or 8 am. I can't remember precisely, I was exhausted from sleep deprivation, my Nubian room was hot like an oven, can't sleep.
