Small rules question. At around 12:40 when Charles dies to combat damage from Shaun, the Grasp of Fate with Omnath under it "leaves" the battlefield and returns Omnath to Shaun. Wouldn't the trigger to return Omnath never hit the stack due to Charles being removed from the game (under rule 600.4c)? "If an object owned by a player who has left the game would be put into any zone, it leaves the game instead. (This includes abilities that would be put onto the stack.)" Due to the fact that the leaving the battlefield trigger doesn't "resolve" and leaving the game is not a state based action. Genuinely curious so please let me know if I'm being a buffoon.
@HansHurin
@HansHurin Жыл бұрын
Gatherer Ruling explains it: 04.11.2015 In a multiplayer game, if Grasp of Fate's owner leaves the game, the exiled cards will return to the battlefield. Because the one-shot effect that returns the cards isn't an ability that goes on the stack, it won't cease to exist along with the leaving player's spells and abilities on the stack. What you might be thinking of is Oblivion Ring, which has a clause "when Oring leaves, return..." so there the trigger would go on the stack and then cease to exist.

As supplement to what others said, a buffoon would have blamed the PWP team for not following rules without accepting that they might be wrong about it. Also, yes, "exile under" effects have been different recently; Oblivion Ring would work how you pointed out, but this creates multiple problems, such as being able to destroy or sacrifice your own enchantment before it exiles and thus have the LTB trigger resolve before the ETB trigger resolves, so now, it's a single effect that continues until the permanent leaves the battlefield instead of two different effects.

@@thanhavictus What I was communicating is that I find it refreshing to see cEDH wins that don't involve thoracle. 6:40 I think Force of Will countering Wandering Archaic knowing Shaun's overwhelming board state proved to add to their downfall seeing that it expended Drake's stretched thin resources and allowed for Shaun to play instants and sorceries without significant issue. Some interaction could have been doubled up and used against Shaun.

Drake went for it just a turn or two later. The last thing he wanted was Charles to double up on his protection.
@Joolenplus

Drake was probably planning on making a comeback with that Culling Ritual which is why he forced. If archiac was out he wouldn't be able to use Culling Ritual to make Mana as he didn't have enough Mana to pay 2 to Archiac. Charles would then get a copy of Culling Ritual if Drake would attempt it and Drake would end up with 0 mana off his Culling as Charles copy would resolve first.

Should the Omnath have returned to play when Charles died? I was under the impression that returning the things exiled with Grasp of Fate is a triggered ability that happens when Grasp leaves play. Once Charles died, the trigger to return things exiled with it cannot go on the stack, thus leaving them exiled forever. I could be wrong, someone feel free to confirm or correct. Either way, great game. Poor Cal just got to basically sit there and watch everyone play for an hour and a half lol.

For lazy people who won't do as you did: when an effect's duration expires, the effect just ends. That's not a trigger; it's just the effect ending, it happens immediately, it doesn't use the stack, it has no controller and it cannot be responded to.

SPOILERS At 12:36, when a player dies, their permanents cease to exist (therefore their triggers don't happen). Grasp of Fate's LTB trigger would not be put on the stack, and Omnath would forever be in exile. I don't think this changed the outcome but it's good to keep in mind.
