I think the concept of the story was good. Having a man be in a bad mood during Hanukah because of what happened when he was young, learning to be a good person would’ve made a great story. It reminds me of Punch Drunk Love, one of Adam Sandler’s best non comedic movies. But the lazy writing, low brow humor and Whitey’s annoying voice just ruined it. It’s just another example of how Sandler can do better. This movie I know could’ve been good if Sandler put more effort. I hope they re-release it and make Whitey less annoying, make Davey less of a jerk and actually improve the jokes. Being honest, I don’t hate this movie as much as NC did but I can see why it’s hated and why it’s bad but it still had some decent moments

I honestly feel that they should’ve made it better by toning down Davey’s rotten demeanour. Just have him be more of a normal grump that distanced himself from his life after his parents death rather than a full-on asshole. The fact that Davey went to the psychiatric ward and drunk tank before meeting Whitey makes the story more complicated than it should. For example, when young Davey finds about the death of his parents, the scene with Jennifer should be something like this: Jennifer: I’m sorry, Davey. I’m so sorry. Davey: Thanks. Jennifer: You know, you could always celebrate Hanukkah with my family. How about you come to my house tomorrow? Davey: It’s alright. I think I’m better off spending Hanukkah alone. Jennifer: Well, the door’s always open. You can always come to my house. Davey: Thanks, Jen. Happy Hanukkah. Narrator: But he never came to Jennifer’s house, and he eventually became adopted. Davey just drifted away. It’s a much more subtle way of showing how Davey became the way he is now due to his grief. I feel that making Davey sympathetic this way would help us relate to him more. I also would’ve loved it if Whitey was also shown to be in the wrong for telling others about Davey’s backstory without his consent. I think it would’ve made for great development on both sides.

How to fix this movie: 1) Cut Rob Schneider and his characters. 2) Cut the bathroom jokes. 3) Give Davey a soul (bonding with the basketball kids, reconnecting with Jennifer, finding common ground with Whitey and his sister, no rampages and outbursts of douchery without justifiable cause). 4) Rename Whitey something more real-sounding, tone down his oddities (I.e. cut hairy ass and spasm attacks, or turn the spasms into something important like epilepsy that leads to dramatic tension later), and give him a more subtle actor (like Ed Asner). 5) Tie this back to Hanukkah! Seriously - when does Hanukkah ever become important to this story? Why bother setting it around Hanukkah if the holiday itself never comes into play?

ztslovebird well idk much of actors but I never felt that any of them didn't give effort into their roles but for your (3) (4) (5) (3) davey does have a soul but losing his parents cause his warm heart to turn to ice mention in song and whole movie he couldn't have been nice to those basketball kids cause it was still showing how ass davey was just because it's how he's always been after the death of his parents. he does reconnect with Jennifer and so much so she was the only one in the room who let him speak finding his actions reedemable by sticking up for whitey and seeing tears in her eyes showing he's change and grew a soul. common ground with whiety and sister he does at the end when he sticks up for whiety and convinces everyone to give whiety what he's always wanted his whole life. without those douche moments we wouldn't know how bad of an ass he was and how much it take for him to change he really went through a breakthrough in the movie and became a really good guy. (4) real sounding character whiety is anything but normal small, weird feet twin, weird voice, old man you don't give a Morgan Freeman voice to that type of character. his oddities well it's anything but normal but what town doesn't have it's freaks davey just happened to stumble upon that family. (5) the movie was never souly about Hanukkah even in the beggining it never said this was a Hanukkah story no it narrated this was a story about an ass in town named davey stone it's mainly about him Hanukkah did play a role it was the death of his parents which is why he hates those nights the most and is more of an ass on that time even again narrator admits to saying this is tje time of year davey hates most giving davey a reson for that ass behavior you mentioned he should tone back on, but to answer that Hanukkah besides those plot points was never intended to be the main focus or important in movie it's about a boy who's patents die on the holidays and later overcomes holding in the pain and excerting it out on others into letting go of his rough asshole side and letting his pain out in a healthier way while also becoming a man with a soul. you seem to just have a problem with the whole movie in general because the changes you ask for are not minor some movies are just not equal to the watchers taste I recommend a diffrent movie in your case. It sucks that this is what we got for a Hanukkah story when the actual story is inspiring, awesome and would lend itself easily and spectacularly to a movie. Most Jewish holidays don't have origins in stories so they'd need to be made into a movie about 'the spirit of the holiday' if you even wanted to make a movie about them. See what I would have done to improve this movie: 1. Get a better voice for Whitey I’d say either Christopher Plummer, Chevy Chase or Ed Asner just get an actual elderly actor 2. Davey is Jewish and Whitey is a Christian why not make the movie more on that angle on how their cultures clash but Whitey tries to adapt to make his home and his Christmas celebrations for comfortable for Davey and in return Davey tries to help Whitey and the basketball kids 3. Make Davey more likeable yes I get the idea of his character is he used to be nice but he lost his heart after his parents died but make him at least likeable maybe have him help out his girlfriends son and give him private lessons in how to be better at basketball or have a scene where he finds out that everybody in Whitey’s Family is dead except his sister and Whitey doesn’t have many people to be with around the holidays and that’s why Davey stays with him 4. Get rid of the product placement I don’t know much about the Jewish religion but if you’re going to have spiritual beings come in to teach Davey how much of a jackass he’s been why not have it be the flames in the Minora come to life you could give all of them unique personalities and still set it in a mall establish earlier in the film when Whitey and Davey visit the mall that there’s a shop that smells items for people of all religions and he plans to buy Davey a Minora, Davey refuses the gift because he hates Hanukkah but later when Davey relapses and starts stealing from the mall he notices it in the window of the shop and steals it despite hating that time of year he sits down with it and lights the candles and the flames come to life and finally make him seek redemption actually tying Davey’s redemption into the holiday the movie is named after
@dr.altoclef92555 жыл бұрын
You could make it more immediately obvious that Davey is depressed, maybe have him occasionally seem to warm up to people or be happier but react with confusion or anxiety if it continues and then he tries to alienate himself again-
@mrcritical67515 жыл бұрын
Davey seems pretty happy in the movie to go around town acting like a jackass which doesn’t really tie into his character as he hates everybody, I would make him live out in a cabin on the outskirts of town alone and isolated from everybody and he only comes into town occasionally to buy stuff and mostly just keeps to himself and quickly returns home as soon as he’s got everything he needs, but then somebody builds a skating rink near his house which pisses him off as people start trespassing on his property whilst exploring the surrounding areas and he gets in trouble with the cops because he assaults somebody who accidentally damaged his house (a bit like Carl Fredrickson from Up) which is why he ends up in the situation he ended up in within the film where he’s court ordered to help Whitey this way he’s not in trouble for being a cheap bastard who dashed out in a restaurant instead it’s a reason you can understand
@mrcritical67515 жыл бұрын
Thanks Another idea I had would be that early in the film when Davey moves in with Whitey there’s a mystery about Whitey building something in his garage that he won’t let Davey see, at first Davey just blows it off as some Christmas tradition he doesn’t know about or Whitey just being crazy but then halfway through the film after Davey’s had a moment that emotionally destroys him Whitey decides to reveal what he’s been building and it’s revealed to be a very large advent Callander with 8 doors, Davey asks him about it and Whitey reveals he’s combined the Christmas tradition of advent calendars that you open for every day leading up to Christmas with the Hanukkah tradition of giving gifts for every day of Hanukkah. Davey asks Whitey why he went to all this trouble for him and Whitey tells him that he cares about Davey and that religion and tradition are some of the most important things in the world and that despite their different cultural beliefs Whitey still respects the Jewish religion and wants to help Davey reconnect with the religion he lost and then he gets a funny line about how he mixed it with an advent calendar because he wanted it to fit the decor of his house and that’s the moment where Davey and Whitey finally start to get along and see eye to eye more with Davey actually willingly helping Whitey as opposed to doing it begrudgingly because he was forced to by the court
@989538125 жыл бұрын
@@mrcritical6751 I like that a lot, it would have been pretty touching if they did something like that. Let me throw my two cents in there now; in the ice rink scene, instead of that bullshit, when Whitey recounts what happened that Hanukkah night, Davey becomes increasingly distressed (instead of needlessly angry) on having to remember his parents death that he pleads Whitey to not continue. After finishing, Whitey and his sister notice that Davey left and they track him down to the parking lot of the rink, leaving on his own. Whitey asks him why he's leaving and he says "I don't want anyone's sympathy, sorry." Whitey says that he shouldn't keep hiding his emotions like this and Davey responds (in a semi-defensive tone) that he isn't and is just continuing life, knowing that he isn't that "cool all-star kid" anymore and that he's just some jerk now, but he shouldn't drag anyone else down with his misery. Both of them try to tell him that Davey isn't alone and that he always has them, but he turns away, telling them that those days ended after he won that game for his parents. He wishes them a Merry Christmas and walks away, leaving Whitey and his sister saddened. Jennifer and her son, having overheard the conversation, catch up to Davey and try to convince him not to leave (in Jennifer's case, again). But Davey tell them that it's not their concern and that they aren't kids anymore, so she should just move on now that she has her son, they can have a good life without him. Before leaving, he says that nobody needs to care about him and when he's out of sight, Jennifer sadly says "I never stopped caring."
@mrcritical67515 жыл бұрын
Nice Now I’d completely remove the mall stealing scene and replace the scene of Davey finally finding reason to be happy again with a truly low moment, Davey returns to Whitey’s house to pick up his stuff and finds the minora that Whitey tried to buy him earlier in the film that he refused, Davey tries to throw it away but somehow can’t bring himself to do it so just pockets it and leaves going straight back into the woods where his house is only now it’s severely damaged by the jockstrap guy instead of burned down, he then just sits in the ruins of his home (symbolic of him just living a ruined life and living with it) and starts putting everything back where it belongs, earlier in the film we never see the interior of Davey’s house it’s just him going in and out we see so here we actually see how he lives without Whitey, it’s a tiny one room cabin, with a crappy old sofa, a busted TV that doesn’t even work, a couple pictures of his parents are up with their faces smudged out, a rotten carpet, smudged windows and a broken light so he has to use candles to light his house. He tries to light a candle but finds himself unable to do it so he gets the minora out and starts lighting the candles on that to light his house. He then sits and just looks at it and that’s where the spiritual Guardians come in all the flames on the minora come to life and are all voiced by Jewish comedians and actors like Mel Brooks and Jerry Seinfeld. The flames basically just tell Davey what he’s told in the original film that he needs to just accept what happened, let all him emotions out and finally accept other people into his life. Davey asks what the point is as he doesn’t want to let people in as he doesn’t want their sympathy and the flames tell him that wasn’t an issue Whitey never helped him because he felt sorry for Davey he helped him because he watched him grow up as a bright spark in the community and then have that spark extinguished and that Whitey just wanted to see Davey be happy because Whitey likes to make people happy and that Jennifer didn’t reach out to him because she felt sorry for him she did it because she cared and loved him before he became like this and just wanted to see him find a reason to care about people again. And then that leads to the whole scene of Davey going to defend Whitey at the award show and the Jewish dance (minus racist Chinese Rob Schneider) and Whitey finally getting that award

We may not have a good Hanukkah movie, but we do have 1.5 movies about Passover (Prince of Egypt and the first half of 10 Commandments) and half a movie about Shavuot (the second half of 10 Commandments). Prince of Egypt is very well-considered, and 10 Commandments is considered one of the greatest films ever made, so... it's not all bad.

The part where NC calls Adam Sandler went on WAY too long to be funny, but I get the idea behind it: (1) It's a parody of some of Sandler's own humour and (2) I'm pretty sure Sandler's gotten a few calls like that in real life.
