Eilmer of Malmesbury was Europe's first aviator around 1005-1010 AD.
William of Malmesbury wrote about 100 years after the event in 'Deeds of the English Kings':
“He was a man of good learning for those times; of mature ge and in his early youth had hazarded an attempt of singular temerity; he had by some contrivance fastened to his
hands and feet in ordet that he night fly asly in
Daedalus, and collecting the air, on the summit of a tower, had flown for a distance of a furlong (200m); but agitated by the violence of the wind and a current of air, as well as the consciousness of his rash attempt, he fell and broke both his legs, and was lame ever after.
He used to relate as the cause of the failure that he had forgotten to provide himself with a tail!”

Icarus flew too close to the sun, but as he fell, he THREW his head back, mouth wide, shoulders quaking and laughed as he fell to his certain doom. I think there was joy in Eimar's crash too. The duality of man is such that, even in our abject failures, we can learn great things. In his flight and in his fall, I think that Eimar got a taste of the ether, of which we are all made. And, just like Icarus, felt the thrill of the DARING and the triumph in the failure🖤

I live roughly 40 miles away and my Daughter and I went there a couple of years ago. He apparently landed in what is now an Alleyway and he was actually banned (by the Bishop) of trying it again. Malmesbury is a fascinating place and not only is it famous for Eilmer, it also boasts the first person to be killed (1703) by a Tiger in the UK! Hannah Twynnoy who is buried in the Graveyard was killed by the Tiger (who was with a travelling circus) while she was working at the local public house. It was tethered but she kept on annoying it by poking it with sticks that it lashed out and killed her. Also, Ethelstan, the first King of all England is buried at the Abbey. Malmesbury has the oldest Hotel in England (still in use today), the Old Bell and on the walls of the Abbey, there are still bullet holes from where people were lined up and executed there during the civil war.
