this works for all velocities and they do not need to be equal to eachother. What you will find is that if your two velocities are small (aka not really comparable to the speed of light) then the final velocity will become very very very close to just V(ab) + V(bc). To see this take a look at the denominator of the V(ac) equation on the right, it reads 1 + V(ab)*V(bc)/c^2. now imagine V(ab)*V(bc) is a very small number compared to c^2. If this is true then V(ab)*V(bc)/c^2 becomes very very small, approximately zero for almost all everyday activities. if that term is zero then the denominator of the V(ac) equation just becomes 1 leaving us with just V(ac) = V(ab) + V(bc). to give an example of this lets say 2 cars head at each other at a speed of 27 meters per second (about 60 miles per hour). the term V(ab)*V(bc)/c^2 would then equal 0.0000000000000081 so the denominator would be equal to 1.0000000000000081. the final equation for V(ac) would then look like V(ac)= (V(ab) + V(bc))/1.0000000000000081 which is 53.99999999999956. As you can see with this, when the velocities are small compared to the speed of light you can pretty much just add them together.

It wont be noticable as linear pointwise addition still works for coordinate surfaces with low velocities. Try, however, computing it as an excercise with the formula!

Then there is the easy way to understand all of this. Just follow through with a DIY study of "Motion". Simply figure out exactly what motion is. By example, I can say that even a high school dropout can do this, and in doing so, one quickly independently fully understands Special Relativity(SR), and at the same time independently derives the SR mathematical equations. Sadly, kids these days have been led to believe that you have to be another Einstein to do such a thing. All you really need, is to practice common sense, and to place the value of truth, above the value of mere beliefs and dis-beliefs.
