Stoicism for Inner Peace (book): einzelganger.c...
The Stoics considered discipline a virtue, along with other related qualities like perseverance, endurance, high-mindedness, and self-control. The Stoics favored hard work and spending their days wisely. Seneca, for example, urges us not to waste our time and act now as life is short. Marcus Aurelius points to nature, concluding that we naturally tend to be hard-working. This video explores Stoic philosophy that may help develop self-discipline.

I have this quote in front of my bed, it's the last thing I see when I go to sleep, and the first when I woke up: "becoming rich is hard, being poor is hard, choose your hard" and this quote helped me a lot to improve in life, and after discovering stoicism, I change my perception to rich and poor, not about just money or materials, but about the quality of life, thoughts, and mindfulness.

Yeah, discipline is a superpower After my college graduation, I want to be financially independent and take responsibility of my parents, so I selected a specific area which I thought ok for me. Then I started to work, slowly and calmly [Time and patience are the strongestof warriors]After understanding the basics, little by little I began to enjoy my work. Now I am have an earning and doing the work that I choosed to do. Doing things are much easier after certain time man, because you will unconsciously find time for it, even in the midset of troubles. When I started to fix myself. The one thing I want to cultivate the most was discipline. Firstly I started to read, when it became my habit I started to workout/playing, then started to Expertise In a specific area for earning bread, now it all becomes a habit and still going on ,much easier.

This reminds me of writing my first few novels, building the self-control and discipline required to create the book was like building a set of muscles. It was hard at first, only a few hundred words per day. But, like anything, it became easier with practice and I could increase the mental weights to a few thousand words per day. Discipline is freedom!

@Einzelgänger I appreciate the perspective you take. There is truth in ideas that have been repeated throughout history. However, there doesn’t seem to be much psychology to reinforce the ideas. How one is taught self-discipline is hugely important; one can have self-discipline and appear to be noble from lookers-in, but deeply hate themselves or intensely berate themselves from the inside when the schedule or work isn’t done properly. I agree, self-discipline is important, but if you don’t love yourself as well, self-discipline can destroy the self.

I would say not giving up is the key to success. Many people said I would not complete my degree because of the language barrier I had when I moved to another country. However that just made me not want to give up. While others around me dropped the degree all together, I stayed on to the end. It wasnt easy. There are times I wanted to throw in the towel but I wouldnt allow myself to give up unless I had to. Being determined requires being stubborn. Stubborness isn't always a bad trait.

summary Epictetus always preaches to never waste time, for life is short (above point is probably from another stoicism related video) focus on things you can control ie your reaction to things you can’t control the world will always have something or the other to offer, and it will only keep increasing, it is up to us to resist, and persist in our goal. true freedom, according to stoics, if being free of the chains of external circumstances ie not being a slave to distractions and temptations industriousness is the will to work and viewing working as an innate duty of ourselves; seeing ourselves as being programmed to work since birth. Aurelius preaches industriousness as something to be viewed not as a punishment, but as something to look forward to. laziness indicates a lack of self love towards his nature, that is the natural inclination towards being industrious. Mother Nature has also been programmed to work and rest at fixed times, and Aurelius preaches that we too must follow her. it is not our duty to sleep our life away, but to work. Aurelius always reminded himself of his duties as an emperor during his meditations. the stoic philosophy preaches that it our duty to hi our our innate abilities and maximise its use always have goals and sub goals, otherwise you are bound to drift away and waste your energy on things that don’t serve you at all. goals provide us a sense of purpose, and a reason to get out of bed everyday. having a goal is a component of discipline, no goals= no discipline having goals is a way of looking out for yourself in the long term, and working towards said goals is a way of providing for yourself in the long term (my explanation of a quote by Aurelius) with a strong goal, you become more steadfast as you work towards the goal, and automatically become more disciplined, because to you, no matter what, the goal you have is all that matters.

If you're struggling to get things done, get tested for ADHD. ADHD manifestation varies greatly from person to person. The inattentive type of ADHD can present as lack of motivation and procrastination, inability to focus, lack of day-to-day memory, inability to follow a schedule, restlessness, constantly stressed, and many other possible symptoms. Starting even the most simple of tasks can feel like a huge burden. It can feel near impossible to put the controller down, put the phone down, turn the TV off; the brain is starved for dopamine and will turn to whatever easy stimulus provides it, regardless of your higher ambitions. The inattentive type (formerly ADD) is easier to miss than the hyperactive type. If you have unaddressed ADHD, you will likely fall short of your potential, even if you are intelligent. With the right medicine, you will be able to focus on what is important to you rather than getting "sucked in" or "stuck" consuming entertainment. You will still have to put in the work, but the right medicine can make a huge difference.

The symptoms of ad(h)d sound like a massive excuse people give themselves. Like a by-product of our mediocre generation. Most people are so undisciplined in life that they develop all these symptoms. Myself included (I am not looking down on people who don't have their sh.t together. I don't and I just turned 30). Yet strangely, everytime I implement discipline into my life, I am suddenly not suffering from any anxiety, laziness, unattentiveness, impulsivity, etc. Everytime I go for instant gratification, I am back to my "ADD" self. If you learnt about the dsm-5 history you wouldn't trust any of these psychiatric pseudo illnesses. The people who made the DSM themselves call it a fraud. edit: I just saw a nurse in a psychiatric unit the other day because I was feeling depressed as always. He said himself that the DSM was linked to the pharmaceutical industry and that strangely there was a medicine as a remedy for each symptom listed below each "disease"'s description. He also admitted that the concept of "spectrum" in mental "illnesses" was a very effective way to medicalize more people. He made sure he would refer me to a psychiatrist who wouldn't force me to use drugs to feel better.

@@sofitocyn100 My manager, who went to a prominent college in the 70’s, said that he saw people fail out of college by playing cards, gambling, and going to the movies. Prior to the technology era, the symptoms manifested in slightly different ways. My symptoms became apparent back in 6th grade. My entire school life prior to graduating high school, I didn’t watch TV and video games were minimal during the school year. My focus was on my schoolwork, yet my symptoms got worse over that time period. I have tried to “out-discipline” my ADHD symptoms from my early 20’s until my early 30’s and the symptoms continued to get worse. In my 30’s, I finally opted for medicine. ADHD does have physiological aspects. Low blood pressure is a good stand-alone indicator for ADHD. Some cases of ADHD respond well to medicine that lowers blood pressure, which in turn increases blood flow to the brain. Some cases are related to sleep apnea, and medicines that reduce respiratory tissue collapse can help. As for more general cases, we don’t know the cause (the chemical imbalance / hormone deficiency model [for depression, but also applies to ADHD] has been disproven), but we do know that medicine can help reduce ADHD symptoms. After graduating, I’d love to do a buddhist retreat for 3-6 months and see if I can train a lower baseline. If self-discipline works for you, great, but it’s not going to work for everyone and denying the existence of ADHD isn’t going to help either. ADHD has decreased my quality of life over the past decade and led to delays in my education, career and retirement planning, family planning, and more. If it weren’t for my family’s support, I would have slipped through the cracks years ago. Hopefully broader awareness will help prevent people from experiencing some of the pitfalls I went through.

Nowadays people work not because they embraced their industriousness some people dont even know what that means, let alone stand still by the thought of why they work. But because they fear rejection, fear of social exclusion/expectations, fear of opinion of family or friends, the desperate need for money / greed. Some have to because they have children to feed, or a house to pay, so its not even a matter of industriousness they are forced to work because it leaves them no choice. Also while would you sweat your ass off for someone else while you're just a number? I think thats anything BUT self love and anything BUT self respect. I think balance is important, doing hard things is easier when your life has balance, you can't just only give. I am not sure how Aurelius lived but knowing what a normal worker earned vs what a soldier or an emperor (its x1000) earned I dont think its a fair comparison to compare the life of a rich emperor with the life of a poor farmer that was forced to work and only give, barely receive. It seems like Aurelius had a hard life but thats the life he chose he was an emperor you can't expect to have an easy life as an emperor. We are born for work maybe we used to yeah, but we life in times where work is not necessary you are a number, you are easily replaced, your work barely has any personal meaning, you're just a useful entity. You can call it self dicipline but doing something everyday you hate, I call it foolishness and dumb. Unless it is for your own good, think sports, reading, etc. Not labour.

I think maybe you'd be happier listening to other philosophers. Stoics take pride in everything they do each day, and do not attack life head on to reach the top of the mountain. They move with nature, they move like the ocean. Existentialists on other hand.......

stoic way of living is understanding yourself. When you start understanding yourself you start to see a pattern in your actions. And when you step up a real goal to pursue you gotta break the pattern to reach your goal. We are simple beings in some sense. We are feeling the urge to making our community better in every moment of our existence. Sometimes this is what makes us sad. We gotta do what we must because of our nature. It is the only way to live life to the fullest. We gotta honor those who lived in the past to build our civilisation without even knowing what they were doing. We have responsibilty of improving civilisation. We must do this for future generations and past generations. It is the meaning we are looking for from the very beginning.

You don’t need to “force” yourself when you love what you are doing. When you love what you are doing and the difficulty level is neither too high not too low, you enter the “flow state”; you may forget how much time you’ve worked, your appetite disappears, your distractions too. You didn’t need discipline to learn your first language: your whole being was acting and learning as much as it could. What are the conditions to enter that spontaneous state of engagement?

Beautiful work as always! Self-Discipline is something that I found is so much easier by limiting tech while working on myself and my work! By working on self belief and confidence and our mindset, we can see our full potential. We are the pilot of an interconnected interdependent machine that can move through space and time and can do things of a great nature. Somethings are out of our control but we can control but we can control!
