The optics from my view as a guy in his early 70's (very healthy and "capable", LOL), is that most problems younger men and women encounter, come from our own Hubris, for want' of a better word...absurdly high expectations. You tube has excellent relationship coaches, who talk about these issues. I am thankful that my marriage of 25 years is solid. (Her father raised her with Stoic principals). Stoicism, as an excellent tool, brings forth a common thread thru, enabling love, but with honest-wide open eyes, concerning our own motivations, not so much theirs, since we are only in control of our own motives. To close: My wife, ex-wife and I are friends, without long-remembered 'hurt tarnishing our relationship. A relationship guru once said: "If you are not in breakdown, or buildup with your significant other, you are NOT in relationship", but living a fraud...a rather extreme "call to action" quote, LOL. "Instead of hoping for a life free of misfortune, it's better to wish ourselves the fortitude to handle adversity." Then isn't it better to do what's up to you--like a free man--than to be passively controlled by what isn't, like a slave or beggar?" Marcus Aurelius These quotes remind me of a passage in Steps to Knowledge by Marshall Vian Summers about suffering and blame. Here is an excerpt: "Pain is always a decision that you make in response to any stimuli in your environment. The body will have physical pain if it is so stimulated, but that is merely a sensory response. It is not the true pain that hurts you. The pain that hurts you is the crown of thorns of your own ideas and assumptions, your own misgivings and misinformation and your own unforgiveness towards yourself and the world.... You may feel that you have been wronged by another or by the world... This, however, is not how Knowledge views you, and you must learn not to view yourself in this way... Without condemnation upon the world and upon yourself, the mind is at peace already." (Marshall Vian Summers, Steps to Knowledge)

True! As Jordan Peterson said Pursue 'Meaning of Life'......rather than 'Happiness in Life'. The reason being 'happiness'.. is also fading just as sadness. You can be happy in the morning but sad in the noon and happy in evening and again become sad in the night. The circumstances in life directly dictates the happiness variables. Therefore focusing only on being happy as the only absolute goal robs us away from living a 'fulfilled' life. Live a meaningful life by accepting death and sickness as the very basis of our fragile life, happiness to be enjoyed every time as it doesn't last, sadness with grace as there will be sunlight tomorrow, challanges and adversities to be faced with an understanding that it is profound structure that makes our life of what it is and the very meaning of our existence. Despite all this life fragility, yet still offering our most responsible contribution to the family and society will help us to live a meaningful life in its highest order because we know that sufferings and happiness, both makes up the very 'meaning of life'. So, pursuing the meaning of life and not just happiness......will make us live a more 'Fullfilling life'.

The world "should" misrepresents personal opinions and desires as objective or universal facts. How about you write, "I would like all young people to learn about the stoics" instead of saying that it should be mandatory.
@Fireneedsair2 жыл бұрын
@@samuelmuldoon4839 maybe you "should" stop being so ANAL. I think we need to distinguish what we NEED from what we WANT. We can accept not having what we want, but we can never accept not having what we need and I don't think we'll ever be happy or satisfied without it. I have let go of professional or financial ambitions and I feel better for it, I have let go of dreams of a happy marriage and children and I'm at peace. But I would never be happy or whole being completely isolated, without feeling love and care from others. That's a need. Needs need to be fulfilled. That's what I think.
@RaeganSealy2 жыл бұрын
I also wonder sometimes how much finding contentment in letting go of professional, financial or personal ambitions is actually holding us back - allowing us to feel okay settling for less than we want when actually sometimes it is good to embrace wants and needs, it is good to strive for something, it is good to have goals - even if we might never reach them. Finding joy in the pursuit no matter the outcome seems more healthy to me than finding joy in giving up the pursuit.
@gianellab.49532 жыл бұрын
@@RaeganSealy Yes! That is what I meant by fulfilling your needs. There are universal needs, of course (food, shelter), but there are also individual needs that vary from one person to the next. For some it will be professional ambitions, for others a family. We shouldn't try to let these go because that will simply make us unhappy. We should fulfill them to find wholeness. But you are right, trying does not mean succeeding, so fulfillment should be in the journey and not the outcome!

This video is really about what reality is and why, at a basic level, it is the same for everyone. The one who understands that the future is just our attempt to predict events based on a bunch of similar events lived, is not upset when his prediction does not come true, because he knew that the percentage there is less than 30. A person who understands that mistakes are a great opportunity to learn something and that understanding how bad you are is only an indicator of control over the situation, is not afraid to make mistakes. A person who understands how the process of the formation of the psyche takes place does not get angry at people who just live their lives. The first thing a psychologist does when you come to a session is trying to fix your psyche. Second, he is trying to teach you about your psyche so that you can fix it yourself. Simply understanding a thing opens up every way for you to interact with it, which is far more than anyone else is willing to give you.

Thanks, and ordered your book....Had to comment again on your words to live by, 3 months later. Watching relationship videos forces us to aware of our foibles. Marriage coaches encounter these repetitive reactions amongst men and women's relationships,, to the point where they do not hear themselves, nor the other one. We go back to growing our Stoic principles, gather strength, and approach issues with new eyes. This tool definitely helps take us our of the constant negative cycle. The all too painful relationships we trash, regret, and eventually grow over, teach us as we mature, to hold our tongue when triggered, not easy, but to consider not throwing away that which is good and pure. I continue to look for those stories which include a real healing component, as there is too much inherent evil when relationships run awry. Men and women have a terrific capacity for reconciliation. Thanks for your channel, Einzelganger. And, those who provide feedback from a position of growth and awareness, are proof of positive healing-change.

Look at how soon we’re all forgotten. The abyss of endless time that swallows it all. The emptiness of all those applauding hands. The people who praise us - how capricious they are, how arbitrary. And the tiny region in which it all takes place. The whole earth a point in space - and most of it uninhabited.

We must learn how to cope life with the basics like food shelter medicine and clothing in a minimal manner from our childhood. Then we must be taught that even if we earn those in enormous amounts we have to leave those behind us one day and therefore never indulged luxuries.Thats because the more you indulge the you feel miserable at the end like a vicious circle. Knowing this truth we must share our belongings with the less fortunate gives us immense happiness .No matter what 'change 'offers in life.

Genuine question: how do we differentiate acceptance from being complaisant? Sure we can just NOT care when people insult us and our being, but what if they do the same to someone we cherish? Should we just accept the situation and allow the offender to continue? Wouldn't we then be complacent in the abuse? I'm often perplexed by these thoughts that we should: "be like the river" and/or "accept things for how they are". Wouldn't there be situations that are so dire and in need of oneself to step up and not accept what's in front of us..? Another question: how do we also differentiate acceptance from suppression of our emotions? I'll provide a situation: If a bully were to approach you and start pointing out every flaw of yours; I can understand saying things like "yes, that is true, but I also have many strengths, etcetc" likewise "no, that is false, but I also have many flaws, etcetc" Won't there be a time where the constant harassment eventually leads to a build-up in emotion? Where THAT single day where you already feel ticked off; and accepting more verbal/physical(?) abuse is no longer plausible? Looking for advice and thoughts from others about these scenarios...
@MGallear92 жыл бұрын
this is my question also, at what point do you decide a situation has crossed the line. Hopefully, Einzelganger can shed some light on this.
@silviathokchom58102 жыл бұрын
Bullies should be bullied and make them understand how it’s felt. Let’s face it, abusers only intensify their abuse when they see you not responding and when you keep acting timid. They find their gratification in making you feel like a loser. Eventually, those insults will imbed into your subconscious and may lead you to become less confident, and affect your inner peace as our senses do not reflect those insults like a mirror does. So, standing up for ourself once in a while is the key to teaching the abuser a lessen, because their meatbrain can not be corrected by sweet talks.
@RaeganSealy2 жыл бұрын
Yes! How do we contrast this with "the power to accept the things we cannot change and change the things we cannot accept?" How do we create social change, advocate for ourselves and others if we are merely accepting how life is all the time? This is useful in situations where we cannot change the outcome, but not where we can. I guess it's differentiating the two that becomes challenging.
@_helmi2 жыл бұрын
Acceptance is like saying "Timeout! Here is the situation right now" then you observe the outside and list out in writing the first problem that comes to your mind ie. people insulting you, SO don't want to fetch you from home (keyword observation of people's behaviour). Next, observe how you feel about the situation and write next to the situation earlier ie. you feel angry or sad or just generally not comfortable. So those are the steps to acceptance. You are complacent when you don't want to change anything about the situation or how you feel about the situation.
@brianabdulhai29962 жыл бұрын
It’s a question I’ve had also. Although not a complete answer or even a correct one, what I’ve gathered from quotes/books/meditation is that many external situations like someone berating you/friends/family or physically hurting you always leads to an internal outcome expressed by one’s own thoughts and emotions, whether it be envy/hatred/etc. The difference between the external and internal events is that for the most part, only internal expression and thought can be completely controlled by you through awareness of said thoughts. This I believe Stoicism teaches very well. It’s through this awareness of our thoughts and how we personally dictate things as good or bad (our moral compass) that can lead us to react in completely different ways (you can ignore the bully, react physically against them, despise them, talk to them, etc). I believe that complete awareness of what is going on and how it makes you feel, and then logically coming to a conclusion of what you should do in that situation would be the most ideal thing to do (but make sure it lies within your moral compass). I don’t believe stoicism tries to teach you to just lay on your back and accept things as they are and not do anything about it. I believe that it teaches us how to be aware of how our emotions and how to use this awareness to be in control of actions as they are guided by your moral compass and logical reasoning. To put it into a few words “Be aware and logical in your thoughts and actions (and their consequences) and do not let them control you. Once you have done this, then act in the manner you deem to be correct based off the conclusion you have come up with” Of course no one will be always in control of themselves… it’s impossible. We are humans not machines. The Bible expresses that even Jesus has succumbed to his anger when the merchants were selling goods on temple grounds by flipping the tables and telling them to leave his fathers home. Always search for more knowledge about yourself internally and externally through books, meditation, and conversation because with the more knowledge you gain, the more rational your decisions become in certain circumstances.

@@Einzelgänger Marcus Aurelius wasn't black. Neither the people around him. Overcompensating By portraying every historical figure as black because blacks have been "underrepresented" in media doesn't help them in a positive way, same as what parents do with their kids when they think they screwed up, they try to make them feel good giving them in excess. As a result kids just become spoiled.
