Those are suggested as a tool to refrain from engaging in activities that carry you away from states of equanimity in most eastern religions. If you have a "fear of wrongdoing", you won't steal, cheat, lie, or engage in other forms of misconduct that are the polar opposite of equanimity. And at least in the monastic parts of Christianity, it plays a similar role.
@capohd282 жыл бұрын
@@TheDhammaHub Sorry, but living your life based on fear and shame is as far from equinamity as you can get. Living a life based on good principals is. A person should not need fear and shame to act for the common good, and can often have the opposite effect. Religion often is the cause of much pain, intolerance, war and suffering in the world. Philosophy doesn't do that as teaches people to be responsible for their own actions, not to blindly follow other's orders as religion often does.

Wow that was very enlightening. "Pathetic" is a charged term in our society, but like most words it's used incorrectly. Apathetic = non-pathetic. "-pathy" is regarding emotions. Apathy is the absence of emotions. Like a famous movie about Wall Street says; "don't get emotional", i.e. don't be pathetic! A great technique for meditation is to try and avoid filtering thoughts thru emotions. As you meditate you take a rational position on what you sense and think. So you may hear a car horn and normally your emotions would bring anger at your neighbors. But in meditation, you simply see this as a horn honking from a car with out any emotional bias. It's a great way to calm your soul. Being pathetic is a bit like being hysterical. You have no control over your reactions as you give in to emotions.

I feel justified in my initial trigger of anger towards a certain someone. The feelings return time-to-time, I go with the flow and watch the feeling of anger sail away to whence it came. I don't want to feel angry and broken all the time so I often question that feeling. (I tend to struggle recalling traumatic things unless directly reminded). I know we both carry fault to an extent and I don't blame her for being more interested in other guys. I realize it's not directly jealousy or envy that makes me angry. It was the consistent double-sidedness, the lying, the disregard that accompanied the infidelity, and topping it off, pretending like nothing ever happened. I was deeply in love with her and that passion was tarnished and turned into a poison of ego-dissipation where hatred and love seem more comparable than different. I've known her for years and she tried coming back to me upon breaking up with someone else. HINDSIGHT. I've had plenty of time to forget what hurt me so badly here and there. Now I'm older and have learned to better wield my emotions. That anger and introspection of such emotions reminds me why I should never trust her ever again. When the anger and anguish sets I'm reminded of the importance of self-worth. Idk if that makes sense or if I rambled too much. LEFT ALL REAL RELATIONSHIP CONTEXT OUT.

Concussion injury caused in me emotional damage. It is such a painful state to not be able to control strong emotions, especially when they are caused by narcissistic abuse. It feels so unfair, my sufferiing. Your channel has helped me so much to live in acceptance of my condition. It is not the struggles in life that are hard, it is when I struggle with the struggles. As I was drifting off to sleep my youngest daughter came to mind. She is pregnant and my thoughts take the direction of my pregnancy with her. She cut me off, won't talk to me, for whatever reason. I cannot control it. The thought took me from the pleasant drowsiness to sitting up straight in bed, to an alert distressed state, heart racing. I have a pill that will shut down the amygdala, but I didn't take it. I am tired of taking a pill on the account of someone else. I didn't sleep that night. Lack of sleep causes me even less control of this pitiful state. I felt pathetic. Because this surge in emotions happened when I was not fully awake, I wondered, how could I have prevented it. I was in terrible pain for two days. I finally slept, woke up late in the day (now) and am trying to reorient myself, get back on my track. So I am drinking coffee and see your new post. I will have to finish watching it later, I am still in a fog. I am hoping that I will achieve greater insight to my predicament. I am so sensitive and raw. Meanness can lay me out for days, so for me, people are dangerous. I keep to myself. I need to venture out today and buy food. I am even more vulnerable today and I know it, I dread the idea. I always wished I could be blissfully ignorant and blindly charge through life, fitting in with everyone, not seeing the fallacies between the lines, the type who gets angry when their belief is called into question, no matter how unstable the foundation is. That is not the case for me, and it has earned me a lot of favor among a community, so I must continue to shed the negativity of failed expectations, while continuing to embrace the potential adventures moving forward

Stoicism has the following severe internal contradiction: it espouses "natural slavery." Marcus Aurilius Antoninus' "Meditations" points this out clearly several times. Question - If slaves could violently overthrow their oppressors, and place them in bondage successfully and forever, would they then not be "natural masters?"
@ShadowShroud72 жыл бұрын
That could reference the idea that slavery isn't just of the mind, but also of the body. The reason why the slaves do not overthrow their oppressor is because they allow the bondage of slavery to shackle their will and spirit? Thus they remain slaves in spirit even though they may be physically stronger than their master?
@ahnrho2 жыл бұрын
@eric Spencer It's likely an analogy. Natural slavery refers to the restraint and control over part of one's nature, being the passions -- The successful chaining of such results in one becoming a master that enslaves their own natures. This is not meant to be a dismissal of stoic teaching. Aurelius was probably warning against the potential for the inevitable timely development of powerless pacifism, moral superiority or self-righteousness, and extreme radicalization of stoicism into a rigid doctrine. All the latter which tend to twist, warp, and stray away the intentions of any teaching, as is too often the case in history. In other words, too much of a good thing becomes one very bad. Pardon the cliche hah.

So informative and motivating! Thank you. When you say Stoicism, it's not just something you know but it is something you embody or practice. It is not easy training but don't give up, still continue to improve. Try and try... Being better is healthy. Hope we all have a sense of peace within ourselves, if not present let's create it. I am lost and struggling, but I hope I can enjoy living even when lost and even when struggling.

I seek stoicism. As a person with both autism and ADHD this is easier said than done. Stoicism to me is not about killing all emotion and becoming an unfeeling husk, but being able to control my emotions. In stressful situations, being able to say "No, *I* control me, nothing else" is very useful and powerful. In contrast, in a safe, peaceful situation, being able to "let it out" is similarly useful. I have adopted this philosophy as best as I can. I am a stone wall in stressful or otherwise problematic situations, where outbursts of emotion are useless or harmful, but at home (much to the dismay of my family) I let my emotions go, allowing everything to flood out. This means everything from crying to punching walls, to simply arguing with my cat (yes really). Emotions in, emotions out, all good. Of course, autistic breakdowns break all of this down, go figure, and sends me into panic. But bar that, I keep my head cool, and keep reason at the helm. I decide when or when not to let emotions take control, when or when not to be pathetic. I compromise with my emotions. Lust. If I desire something or someone, I always ask myself "Is this rational? Is this realistic? Is this healthy or useful?" If the answer is yes to all three, then I carry on, doing what needs to be done to fulfill that desire. If the answer is not yes to any of these questions, I banish that desire, as keeping unrealistic wants and desires is stupid. Distress. This is where my diagnoses make life hell for me, since I am very sensitive to touch, sound and light (not epileptic, but still sensitive). This means that distress comes in many forms, often along with a full on mental breakdown, which as stated breaks my reasoning. Distress is the one exception to this compromise, but I still keep it in until I am safe to break down, when I am surrounded by family and friends I trust to help me. Fear. Fear is one hell of a ride for me, as I usually dont express it outwards. This means nobody helps me with fear. I just feel the chills down my spine. I can stay stoic in the face of fear, specifically when I know "this is going to be scary". Courage is not the absence of fear. Courage is the mastery of fear. Letting my fear serve me rather than control me. Delight. This one can usually serve me without trying, so I just take a step back, and experience. As with desire, I often ask the same three questions. If the answer is yes, I allow delight. If the answer is no, I don't even partake in whatever event causing the delight. To me, control is most valuable. Not control over others, that is a luxury only given through extreme trust, but instead my control over myself. I value that over any desire, delight, distress or fear. I fail sometimes, yes, but the point is to never give up.

Overall I agree with the comments about cheating. But you cannot be the one to say this to the person you’ve cheated on lol. If you cheat on someone, you should also on up and take accountability for hurting someone’s feelings. You can try to become a philosopher all of the sudden explain why they shouldn’t be upset. That’s the act of a sociopath

An expanded philosophy on this is to not just be non-reactive or attached to the emotions that arise through living life but rather to look at the things that happen with acceptance and ask, what is this teaching me to help me move more in the direction(s) I desire. whether your goal is equanimity, calm and resilience or excitement, joy and expansion the formula is the same.

Anything beyond our reactions to the three main instinctual drives, that of Danger, Food and Sex, are societal conventions, which are a longshot from what our body and minds have been developed to handle. We use our seemingly ancient yet very recent, emotional and physical biologic mechanisms to interact with a world that humans have created for themselves in a CONSIDERABLY short timespan when compared to the span of the rest of evolution. The extremely fast development of society and cultures has swept our feet from under us, and mental health is declining naturally as a result of an overload of stimuli for natural bodily instincts to handle. There are people who seemingly "handle life well", yet still experience uneccessary stressors and hardships as a result of their own psyche attempting to deal with what they experience. A result of overthinking, when instead, we are designed for clear and precise, minimalistic reactions to stimuli in a natural setting.

I don't think I deserve "good outcomes" but not do I think ppl who get distressed , lustful or anxious are shameful or irrational. We are humans and innately feel emotions at birth. The stoically minded are blessed or cyborgs if they are truly never able to let anything hurt them..to achieve self mastery takes a very strong mindset in the first place so individuals able to be stoic are probably already practicing restraint in life. Also to constantly bite down on your natural emotions and responses to succeed in feeling "moderate " is in a way acting out of fear of being afraid or feeling any other passion and that is in itself a fearful motivation, Being stoic has only one upside, you won't be afraid of anything. This is a strength indeed but someone could argue stoicism is mere self preservation rooted in fear of emotion. It is surely more beneficial to face your fear and conquer it than "avoid" it by resisting all your natural impulses. Also you will never feel the beauty of extremes, extreme love, even deep sorrow has a poignant element. These emotions are what life is all about, if you avoid emotion you will certainly have a less painful life. But also a less colourful one.
@capohd282 жыл бұрын
I don't think you understand Stoic philosophy at all. It's a common misconception that's about suppression of emotion. It's not. It's about understanding and accepting your emotions but also not allowing them to control you, and to think before you act on them. You are not controlling emotions, just their outcomes so you don't act in ways that may cause bad consequences. It also creates peace of mind since you don't allow others to control your emotional state. Water off a duck.

Georgia J_ Well written. I have been following Stoicism for 3 years now. If it comes from a place of fear then that person is misguided. There is much useful good in Stoic Philosophy that is of great aid. Although I don’t always agree with all of its points, (I’m not a stoic philosopher). A good overview book is ‘The Little Book Of Stoicism’ by Jonas Salzgeber . It talks of Taking Responsibility, Focus on What You Control and Live with Arete. And much more.

The general idea is to get warmed by the fire and not set yourself ablaze, and it is a tricky balance. Or to learn steering this boat so you can choose directions for your life, rather then letting the river of emotion crash you around as it chooses. In one case you have emotions in the other the emotions have you, and then emotions decide your fate. What you like best is of course your choice (if you have the awareness to even make it), and if you look at the freak-out culture of twitter you can get a very clear picture of what happens to people without awareness, they are just crashing around everywhere and feel like complete victims of the awful system around them.

I have mixed feelings about this. There's alot of truth in what he's saying. But when a man cheats on his wife, it's a natural and, I would posit, healthy response for her to be distressed and angry. She has been betrayed. Simply saying that "infidelity happens frequently and, often, to the best of us" doesn't make it okay. Abuse and theft are common as well. It doesn't mean that we should accept it and disallow a strong emotional response when we've been wronged. Humans are living beings. A flatly rational approach to every situation is neither possible nor healthy. That said, I understand the value of this stoic mindset and I believe an integrated approach that utilitizes both stoicism and healthy emotional expression is the best solution for addressing life's problems. I'm just saying that this approach could be stifling if carried too far.
@MsSomeonenew2 жыл бұрын
It is a tricky middle way, you got to accept reality which includes the emotions you experience. Lean too far into your anger people might get killed, too far into repression and you can't resolve your emotions, understanding the world and looking for a decent resolution is the way you get good results.

@manthesecond2 жыл бұрын
The act of cheating and abuse is a product of an emotional response in an of itself. I totally agree that we can’t use this philosophy to gaslight emotions but I also find it ironic how someone who can’t handle their own emotions that they feel they have to lie, cheat, hit, kill or steal from others is the person who truly needs this philosophy. Stop taking out your own emotions on others. Using the woman who gets betrayed is a shitty example. Her emotions had no bad result. Smh. KZbin has a good way of exposing old male philosophies

Cheating is upsetting because there's an expectation it won't happen and it collapses assumptions you've had about your partner and your future (and even past), if you anticipate the other will cheat you will never be able to fully go all in on your relationship, you'll still hold yourself back since the more attached and invested you are the more pain it'll do and the more vulnerable you'll become to such a shake-up. My point is, sure, it can end up you being cheated on and get hurt and end up being pathetic, but maybe that is how things should be.
