The song is about death being the great equalizer. Everyones going to die and then we shall all be in a coffin made by the same guy. Kings, queens, thieves, and beggars and even the coffin builder himself shall all end up in the same coffin in the same hole. We spend our whole lives trying to seperate ourselves and trying to put ourselves above others but in the end we all end up the very same. And the coffin builder knows this and thats why he only builds coffins, because he knows thats the only thing that he can give to everyone no matter who they are.

**About to crush your theories** This song was inspired by an actual incident that happened when Florence Welch was going out with a member of the punk band, The Ludes. She explained: "This was a song we wrote as a band - most of the others were written by me with one other person. It's very literal. My boyfriend at the time, who was in The Ludes, was going to build a coffin for the cover of their EP, so he couldn't take me to the cinema."

A name Well, people die. All of them, at one point, will die, right? So when people die, they need to be buried, so they need a coffin. Basically, the boy in the song doesn't make coffins for fun, or because it's his job, but also because he knows that everyone dies, and everyone needs a coffin, so someone has to make some. Is this more clear? :3

Ahhh this song is so wonderfully poetic from the viewpoint of an artist. I'm not artist, so I cannot say whether they think this way or not, but I feel that the man sees each of his coffins as a work of art, beautiful and unique. It's his gift to the world, giving the person his last resting place. In some cases, this last resting place may have been the nicest place the deceased had ever stayed. Others, not so much. The coffin, the great equalizer and extension of the artist.

Such a beautiful song. I've gotten to the point where I only listen to it now when I lose someone close to me. It got me through my grandfather passing and my grandmother as well a year later. Something about her voice forces you to come to terms with a loss and just deal with it. It's hard but it helps get through mourning. I have tons of appreciation for Florence and the other bands members for all of their work. This song in particular, however, may be one of the most important they've ever made. At least for me.

just because it's about death, doesn't means it's sad. I really like how Florence's cheerful tone is remarkable in the song, it's pretty much it's essence - talking about something that most take it as "a curse" and make it feel peaceful.

I read that the meaning of the song was that a person can contribute so much to society but he is forgotten simply because what he does is taken for granted, all his life's work is put in a whole and forgotten. She got the idea of using the coffins in the song cuz her previous bf was in a punk band and he had to build a coffin for the cover of his bands album. I love F+TM their music is so metaphoric

Some say it's a blessing, he will never run out of work. Some say it's a curse, heavy feelings everytime he make one. He makes them with love and with care, because he respects death. Each coffin is unique as each life is unique. And it is really a shame, such work, such beautiful coffins and they can never be seen again. Well ... that's my take on the song.

To me, it's about a boy who's used. Heres my take on the song: "My boy builds coffins for the rich and the poor" He'll help anyone, no matter what "They all come to him cause he's so eager to please" Everyone goes to him because they know he'll help them. "He crafts everyone with love...Then it's thrown in the ground" He helps everyone from his heart, but he never gets to see the result of his help because he's taken for granted and no one comes around when they don't need his help anymore.
