I have an Optiplex 980 also but the case must be a SFF. It is actually smaller than most cases but it came with an I7 installed. I was Okay on heat until I plugged in an extension card and installed my 750 ti 4gb upside down in the center of the case. My power supply was super hot after adding the 750 ti. I will try to look up your x3460. Is there a maximum Xeon for installing in the Optiplex 980 ?

@@Bulldawgfani’m guessing you figured something out by now, but I’m gathering that the v2 Xeons work, I’m not positive on the v3. I heard something about x99 chipset mobos being needed for v3, and that it wouldn’t work with the DDR3 sticks I’m repurposing. It might still work with v3, I couldn’t figure out the x79 vs 99 thing when shopping, so for this build I’m emulating what I can verify works from videos.

I put a Xenon W3680 in it that runs at 3.33 GHz and has 6 cores and 12 threads. I have a 1 TB SSD. I have 12 G of RAM, and a very low end graphic card that came with the original computer. I'm thinking of adding a GTX 1050TI or a evga gtx 750 ti if I can find one cheap since they don't need a 6 pin power supply. If I can find a cheap Dell Optiplex 9020 I would get it as a back up computer.

I went into Msconfig and advanced/boot and only 1,2 cores are there to change; shouldnt 1-4 be available? I have original BIOS and also if this makes a diff the bios is set to IDE not ACHI but i tried changing it to ACHI and it wouldnt boot so put it back to IDE and its fine and working. Would that setting need to be changed or is it only for security ect eventhough ACHI is more up to date?. would i have to have loaded windows fresh set to Achi to use ACHI? and do i need to worry as the computer is Win 7 anyway? So do the settings in BIOS make any diff to 4 cores being seen? Thanks for any assistance to can give Tim

Good video, but a little outdated. If you had done this video in 2015 and came to this conclusion I would have agreed. But to upgrade a Dell in 2020 almost 2021 and put a 7 generation old i5 in it is just not the way to go. The i5 3470 goes for $30 to $40 on eBay right now and the 1240v2 go for $55 to $60. You're going to want even the slight help in modern games that comes with the extra threads of the 1240v2. The averages in single-threaded games are not going to tell the whole story. The smoothness over the i5 in multi-threaded games will tell the benefit of the 1240v2 over the i5.

@notatechguy12093 жыл бұрын
@@jamaicankyng If you're not looking to upgrade your whole platform right not I would say yes as the 1240v2 is still going for $40 to $50 on eBay right now. But it also depends on the GPU. I just upgrade a build I'm selling from an i3 2130 to a 1240v1 and went from 30 fps avg. to 45 fps avg. with a 45 fps frame cap and 1% lows of about 23 fps in Far Cry New Dawn, but this is with an HD 7770 GPU. You will see anywhere from 10 to 15 fps jump in some CPU-heavy games but the smoothness will be the biggest difference. The 1240v2 will still be bottlenecked in RDR2, Metro, and Horizon, and you will not see much difference in Forza or Mafia depending on your GPU.
