He was born Rodrigo (or Ruy) Díaz de Vivar. Vivar being the town where he was born. It is near Burgos. He was born either in 1040 or 1043. Historians are not sure of the date. He died in Valencia in 1099. His name, "El Cid" was given to him by the Moors. In the mixture of the Spanish and Arabic language they used, they called him "As-Sid" (Lord or Chief). This was pronounced by the Spaniards as "El Cid", but they themselves actually called him "Campeador" (Champion)

I saw this movie when I was eight years old. After almost six decades EL CID is still an EPIC that stands the test of time.

@drchepa I love Sofia Loren in this movie. In her day she was the most beautiful woman in the world. She's not eye candy. She's an eye candy store. I love how her eyes pop out when Roderigo pulls off an upset win against the King of Navarre's champion.

@marcdaddy33 The Cid would have served his country better if he had overthrown his king and ruled in his stead. Loyalty is a lofty ideal but it should never be accorded to the undeserving. Those unfit for high positions should be removed, forcibly if need be, for the good and the welfare of the many. Misguided loyalty is foolish.

Kaysoon Khoo, Roderigo refused the crown of Valencia because he understood the corrupting influence of power and didn’t want to cross that boundary and put himself in a position where he might lose his soul.

if this is not how the cid did it .. this is how he should have done it.. hollywood at that time knew this and made sure all of us saw honor as it should be and we should rise to the occasion .. those bastards have lost their way.. and so has the world because they (the media) are the power and they misuse their power.

Throughout the film there is a recurrent mention of Spain by El Cid, the King and others. In the eleventh century, Spain was not a political concept, and no one would yell “for Spain and the King”! El Cid entered Valencia, and the city remained in the hands of the troops of Castile for 8 years, from 1094 to 1102; the Arabs retook the city and restored the Muslim religion. In 1238, the city was finally conquered by the Kingdom of Aragon and the Muslim population was expelled from it.

@36ksk In Medieval Europe not just anyone could king. You had to be the eldest male of the royal family. People believed these families had the divine right to rule. El Cid was a nobleman & could be a military leader but he could never be king b/c he was not part of the royal family. The theory of divine right of kings lasted for centuries in Europe pretty much until the French Revolution.

Hold on ! Moment when the bald guy jumps out from wall,façades are more modern than they should be historically! I even noticed an aerial and an electric wire! So much for the historic accuracy!

Good acting , plot and character beat details of "historic accuracy" (not including outright lies) and scenery , even in cinema: the human imaginaton fills in for so-called "realism" if the other things make it want to.
