Yall, poor El. When Mama D talks about being young and starting her family, EL looks traumatized. Also when she talks about GOD. He's gotta be conflicted. MoMA D had the support of her syblings who all begged her to leave Robert. She continued to go back and had at least 3 more kids with that monster after Bunny told her that her " dad" was forcing her to have sex with him. Both parents failed those kids.

Seeing this in 2021, knowing the torment that every single one of her kids went through, I don't know what to think about this. It was beautifully done; LOVE the praise at the end. I'm feeling empathy for Etterlene. Almost all of us have been in love. Some have also done something in life that was stupid, as hindsight is 20/20. She loved that man; she had all of those kids, and I couldn't imagine the thought of seeing their little faces, wondering how she'd feed them all, as a single women. The emotional scars that their abuse has caused, ruined their career. Please let this be a lesson to someone. Etterlene should have stepped out on faith, even if they were all living in a tent.

We have to realize that our parents are too just children still learning. My mom abused me, allowed her bf to sexually abuse me as well and I still have reminders of it daily. Today I’m having an episode however, I have yet to heal fully and it’s because I have not forgiven my mom for the trauma and turmoil she placed in my life and heart. I am on a path of internal healing but I am only human, I fall short and make mistakes. Mental illness is real… it runs rampant through our black community so I’m not as judgmental as I once was. I’m praying she found herself, self love and internal healing because she had to be such a broken individual 🥺

El is such a uniquely anointed and appointed individual, through it all. I truly hope that he gives HIMSELF a chance at life and love sober and the way god intended it during the second half of his life. It seems that so many people (family, industry, exes) have betrayed him that he has lost his belief or confidence in everything but performing so he settles for people and behaviors (sometimes from himself and others unworthy of him (then wonders why things don't work out). A good life and real love is possible, El. Just choose aright. Blessings to you.

I understand the frustration of her not doing anything by leaving for good the first time. But she did try to do something. It's easier to say what could have been done because a lot has changed as far as who you could go to for help. Back then it wasn't easy especially in her case. She got married young to a white man who took his frustrations out on the mother and kids because he married a black woman. Because he married a black woman, he kept losing his job and kept getting no respect. Because she married a white man and had all them kids, police wouldn't have care too much and no one was willing to take them after the many times she tried to leave. During that time beating your wife was no problem in the police eyes because they felt like it is between the husband and wife. If you think about it, the law for a husband raping their wife didn't come into play until like the 80s or something like that. So yeah you are right it felt like she did nothing but we wasn't there to know 100% but of course know enough to judge. My question would be why didn't her brothers step in earlier instead of later? No one is asking why her family didn't help when she was looking for it.

@@lamelya let me tell you something....if a mutherfucker is beating my kids and molesting my kids I wiykd take my kids and sleep under a bridge or kill his ass. She could have went to a shelter. My husband was talking bad about my 29 year old son ( who is not his) and ask his ass what I said and eiykd have did to him. Put it this way when I was done with his ass he went and laid down. It's easy to sit on the sidelines and say what we'd do in a situation. I would like to think that I'd just pick up my kids and move or let's say I did kill his a$$, I'd have to make it look like a suicide cos as Bunny says in her book, he was a white man and there's nothing, NOTHING mama Debarge could have said to make the law see it her way and do the right thing. When mama would call the cops, they'd take his side. Bunny also says that the mother did leave and take the children with her. She'd stay with family but they could only take all those kids for so long. She'd leave and get on welfare but that evil f*cker of a father of theirs would find them then go to the welfare office and tell them that he was back with the family and could/would provide for them causing welfare to cut off the family's benefits. My question would be why did she continue to have children by this man?

Love is an action word. Therefore, unconditional love is a fallacy. Their mother raising them to love abusers, unconditionally set them up to never be able to process fear, anger, and resentment. They bottle their feelings against their father and their mother and use drugs to tame their demons and deal with the pain. How can they ever learn personal responsibility if they never expected it from others? They then continue generational abuse and expect their children to forgive and love them unconditionally too and the cycle continues. There is nothing wrong with being angry and processing it. There is nothing wrong with having conditions in relationships. The first step to this family healing is for them to admit their anger toward both parents and work through it. I hope they get there.

The only thing she could have done was kill him. She wasn’t able to do that. The law would not have helped her; he was a white man. Her neighbors? Pshaw. What kind of resources.... they lived in poverty in a slum. everybody is not strong or brave. People fall and fail. And the church , the religion does that to women - compels them to stay. The husband in these holiness churches is like the Lords regent in the house. So if he is a bad man you are in trouble. And what other man would step to him?
