I think she holds back now because it was so horrific and is a reminder/testament of her failure to protect them. Raising the kids I'm sure she was quiet out of fear. Physical, mental/emotinal abuse by a monster that was unbearably controlling. Fear is often why mothers don't protect their children from monsters. STILL, protecting your children is a must at all cost and she failed them.

Many people from the mother's generation are in complete denial about how they treated their families and the generational afflictions they've caused. If they ever had the courage to contend with what they've done, it would drive them mad, so they pretend or bury it. I have the same types in my family. These types create a narrative of how they were the victims and how they were acting in the best interests of their family and how they did no wrong. They are blinded by their martyr/ victim complex and that combined with characteristics of their generation means that they refuse to take accountability. I hope that I'm wrong, but I doubt the DeBarges will ever get an authentic apology from their mother before she passes. I have people in my family like this and they'd rather go to the grave with it. They are all early Boomers or Silent generation like this lady, extremely prideful. I'm grateful that I am the generation of the grandkids, rather than kids so wasn't the direct victim, but has still impacted me greatly. Generational scars. Sorry for what happened to the DeBarges. Every child deserves the best ❤

I read Tommy’s book, the mom was jealous of Bunny due to that her father was molesting Bunny. She also went to church 7 days a week leaving the kids home with the father. The mother was also warned not to marry Robert by Robert own mother and she used race as a reason why she didn’t want them to marry. Bobby molested Tommy and James however from El on down the father didn’t abuse them, they were abused from the mothers new Spanish bf Pappi and she allowed that to happen as well. There’s a interview with I believe Creflo Dollar on KZbin where Chico discussed this as well as Tommy book. There’s a lot even down to the manipulation of the grandchildren for welfare checks after the money was gone. Please read Tommy books because he never held back

Addiction is a predictable result of childhood trauma. Like as predictable as Type II diabetes resulting from obesity. We need to start viewing it that way. That evil, depraved father chose a poor Black woman because he knew she would have no recourse when he began abusing her and their children. Abusers are experts at choosing and grooming their victims. That said, Etterlene didn't have to marry him or keep having kids. There are always alternatives to allowing your kids to be tortured.

Him telling her that birth control was a "sin" is the same as most Catholics believe. She continued having kids with him because he stayed leaving her , living with other women & having more kids. Bunny TOLD her about the sexual abuse & she STILL left those kids home with their abuser, claiming it was so she could go to church 😒. Thank you for having the strength to admit your misunderstanding and hopefully redirection. When you are sexually molested as a child it can be very confusing so in my opinion, you get a pass on what might have been done as a child as a result of that confusion and early sexual awakening, because you were a child. However, by an adult you know better what’s off limits. No matter who you’re sleeping with just make sure they are 1.) adults and it’s 2.) consensual and it’s your business not ours. Thanks for providing some clarity.
