Was DeBarge talented, yes, but Motown made El so middle of the road during this time because of the crossover success of “Rhythm Of The Night” and “Who’s Johnny.” They had him record songs by songwriters-for-hire and unfortunately, the fickle younger audience just moved on to other performers that ended up being more popular.

The DeBarge group was mostly never very popular with young white people who were the main record buyers. It was always either mostly black listeners and older white people that liked them, but never the main MTV audience, and that had continued into El’s solo career. “Rhythm Of The Night” was the DeBarge group’s only music video and that is a big part of why that demographic never really connected with the DeBarge group. Also, El was too tied to his siblings in the minds of most people and both of his previous singles “Who’s Johnny” and “Love Always” pretty much killed any chance of El reaching a broader audience solo from the start.
