Robo Rally was one of my first favorite board games to play with my family too. My dad made his own boards by photographing the board and cutting out the little squares to rearrange them in photoshop, with added spaces like teleporters, and then laminate them. We also made house rules where each robot had its own thematic special ability. Zoom bots move 3s counted as move 4s. Twitch bot evaded attacks by moving 1 space forward, which was often worse. Twonky started the game with a free random option card. If hammer bot was within 1 space of you they could do a three damage flurry of hammers in place of a lazer. Hulk X90s move 3s counted as move 2s, but had a super lazer that could shoot through walls and hit multiple players in the same line. Squash bot did 2 damage (or was it 1?) just by ramming another players bot. Trundle bot could ignore the second phase of conveyor movement, and spin bots turn left and rights could be used as either when revealed, but had every other damage lock a card, making them much more easily go out of control. I still believe this to be the superior form of the game...

I have to agree on the expansion. I love the base Quest for El Dorado, but we really didn't enjoy the expansion, it makes the whole experience less controllable, amplifying the randomness by a huge factor. There are some devastating curses, and a lots of uninteresting ones. Would love to play the new boards with some different curse rules tho, to add more variety. The heroes I don't really mind, but the best part is the starting anymals. But even there we feel like that discarding rhe parrot right away and buying something expensive is the most powerful of the 4.

Quest for El Dorado was definitely my top game for 2017. I agree about the hexes though, especially the ones that make you move pieces. The one time I played with them, there ended up being a weird potential king-making situation at the end no one was comfortable with. It changed from a fluid game to one that stopped for awkward choices.

No mention of one of the most brilliant aspects of Robo Rally - the damage system. For the uninitiated, it reduces your hand size, reducing your already amusingly inadequate options or even better/worse, locks in commands. So from now on, you have to start every round with a left turn. Getting a limping along stuck turning left robot to do anything, even if it's just extract a little revenge by crashing into a healthier bot and bringing them down to your level, is a pure delight.

Truly one of the greates board games when it comes to shere fun factor. (and isnt that what playing with friends is all about?)

"no one seems to have bought, or even want this new edition of roborally" pardon! i like it significantly better. * the deckbuilding mechanic is stellar, and evens out your turns * the options are much better since you get to buy so many more of them * the priority system is much improved. yeah, there are problems, but they removed so many problems that I have grace for them. in short, they took out the fiddly bits, and left the core that makes the game great. and since it's MUCH easier to teach, I get to play it more often!

Roborally is also also an old favovorite in my group! I agree the latest 2016 edition was not ambitious enough....however some New rules, such as the order of play Or the individual decks, help a lot the dynamic of the game (no need to reschuffle and distribute all the cards which was a pain in the old versions). Would love an XXL édition with more of everything and even a deck building option if that Can be done ! Merci beaucoup pour la vidéo ! Greetings from belgium!

Guillaume Blanc I haven't played either version of the game, but I have watched the Dice Tower comparison, and the new version components are so cheap. It might play better, but I would never bother even trying. It might be okay for kids, but hobby gamers have moved beyond this level of production.

I also think the 2016 RR edition is OK. Yeah, the quality is nothing to boast too much about, but the painted robot minis are neat, and the programming cards are the same size and quality as the cards in El Dorado, although QED certainly looks prettier. Also, the RR'16 has a usable inlay. Unfortunately I have never seen the old RR game live, so I can't compare.

Heroes & Hexes is so weird - I love bits of it, but since getting it my desire to play more Quest dropped off a ton - It's just not that cool lean race game any more and a bit of a messier affair. Which is a shame, because I love the idea of hero cards for going on a diversion, and of spaces where you can take a negative effect to move forward. I may actually just house rule it to just give you a Demon card and ignore the rest of the tokens. Excited to see what they do with future expansions though - Considering the weird approach that H&H took, it would be nice to see what mad path is taken next ^^.

I loved Robo Rally, but many of my gaming friends found that it dragged on and got tedious. As a compromise after five full rounds of no-one touching a flag the nearest bot would be teleported to flag one, the end of the next turn would see the nearest remaining bot teleported, and so on one per turn until all bots were flagged. Then a new five-turn counter would start for flag two after which if no one reached it the process would repeat. This sped up the game quite a bit without changing the character of the game very much.

More childhood! I think it would be SO interesting to play some of the games I loved from my childhood and see how they've held up. Of course, this was the 70s and 80s, before Atari and Intellivision relegated our meager stack of board games to a dusty corner until they ended up in the pile of garage sale items. I remember Feudal and Twixt being my favorite games that aren't Clue or Stratego or Battleship. I bought El Dorado last month: it's great value ($30 Cndn online). The mechanisms match the theme, and things change frequently so it's not boring. There are many variations in the box, so I don't need an expansion yet, but not sure if I will get this one, even though it's not expensive here ($20 Cndn). There is a new stand-alone called The Golden Temples coming later this year that can be combined with the original. Thanks for the RoboRally introduction. The original version looks great. I'll send an e-mail to the publisher. Maybe we can start a petition to return the game to it's former glory. I mean, it's not like having to rebuild an old house where the materials don't exist anymore or are ridiculously expensive.

I never played Robo Rally myself as a child (my first foray into racing board games was actually an old edition of Formula 1, which is basically that Tour de France game that you played on your stream), but it reminds me quite a bit of the League of Legends board game Mechs vs Minions. Oh, I just did some Internet research and learned that Quinns was actually a consultant on Mechs vs Minions, so there you go, Quinns. Someone already made a thematically fun and updated version of Robo Rally, Quinns. AND THAT SOMEONE WAS YOU. Though, granted, it's a questing game, not a race game, but a Mech Race would be a very small bunny-hop from what you've already got there. Edit: Also worth mentioning that there is a race mod for the game itself that they call "Sion Speedway", so there is literally no reason why they couldn't make a racing game next.

Never played robo rally but I’d be down if someone were to teach it to me. On the other side, I’m not exactly after something I have zero experience with. Hearing how everyone speaks of it, I see why its loved, but also why others may not or simply wish some things were corrected about it. Perhaps if someone did get the license, I would assume fans would want an updated look to it, but also keep what’s good about it and fix what needs to be fixed while adding to it (new expansions). I feel like this game requires the touch of a hard core fan who knows the game very well. Someone who can work alongside whomever takes over the license.

Actually, I wouldn't call El Dorado a deck-builder. Building is only half the strategy. It's more like a deck-manipulator: you want to get the good cards in, but you need to get the bad cards out. Starting cards will ruin you later on if you don't trash them, and the objective is to get a slim, efficient deck if you really want to win. Camps and purple cards encourage this by often being easy to access (unlike Clank In Space, where trashing cards is nearly impossible). So it's fun for people who like collecting lots of cards, but it's more fun for people who like efficiency.
