Good strategy, I like it. I'm doing the thing where if I am compelled to shop online (and I do have a compulsive shopping problem), I leave all the stuff in my cart, do NOT complete the sale, and walk away for 48 hours. About 90% of the time, I end up not making the purchase because the compulsion has passed. Saving money feels SO much better than clogging my life up with cr@p I end up not even wanting!

Most helpful thing was tracking every dollar I spent daily & putting a tick where I didn't spend anything. Hoo Boy! I am a South African State Pensioner on an income of R2190 per month plus a small (very small!) side hustle. Save? SAVE??? On THAT amount?? But in February of this year a good friend of mine sat me down and said she thought I could. I thought, 'Sweetheart, you are NUTS!' But I agreed to have a bash and we settled on R300 per month. And because I trust her I agreed to hand her the money to put in her safe. Not only that but I gave her R600 that month for January as well as February. It is now December. I am up to date. And in about 3 of this years months I have actually doubled up because I had to go to Cape Town to visit a relative and had to 'take out' some money which I wanted to put back. And do you know what? I have HARDLY NOTICED IT. And I am hoping to give her an extra R400 before New Year to bring the R3600 up to R4000 which is a nice round amount. And next year I hope to do better. January will be a No Spend month as I will be fasting and in any event have enough food in my freezer. I want to do a TEFL course... I'm very excited.

My husband and I practiced a No Spend in 2020 with a goal of saving $26k for a downpayment for our first home. We had no kids. At the end of that year, we had 26k 👏🏻👏🏻 Since then we’ve practiced No Spend Months, No Spend Winters, No Spend “10Days” or even No Spend Weekends and have meet more smaller goals. We now have 2 kids and 1 income. Our next goal is a No Spend from December 21-May 31 👏🏻👏🏻 I think it’s “easier” when basic human needs are still being met. Good homemade food, free activities and simple desires help too. This lifestyle feels normal

I'm doing a 'NO BUY' for *6 years,* only buying food and essentials, I'm playing 'catch up' on my retirement, my house is stocked with triple of everything I need materially, so I'm following a super-strict budget. I've been doing it for months now, and it's been amazingly easy. The feeling of accumulating money is so much more rewarding than spending it. I'm kinda mad at myself for how much money I wasted in the past buying useless things

During the pandemic I did not go into stores except for groceries. My bank account soared during that time. I stopped going to coffee shops and made my coffee at home and took a thermos to the beach or for a drive instead. Packed homemade lunches for outtings. A good picnic is just as much fun as eating in restaurant. This year I want to combine spending less with selling off excess.

I'm already doing this challenge since January 2024 and so far I'm totally enjoying it. I noticed I value my purchases way more than before and avoid impulse shopping. Gaining more control over my finances and having more money in my savings account makes me feel at ease. Of course I had to adjust my allowed spending list a couple of times, but the amount of allowed items stayed the same (just crossed out and replaced some options). This challenge was so much fun that I'll continue it in 2025. :D

As a person who lives mostly a no buy life, as in I have a detailed budget, track every expenditure, live below my means, and buy very few non-essential items because I just like a simpler life that's more eco-friendly, this is the best video I've seen to explain the no buy concept. Yes, knowing your why and setting goals is crucial to success. Thank you for doing this. I hope it is helpful to many people trying to use this concept to reach their goals.

I live in CA and the cost of living combined with inflation has forced me into a no buy these past few years. 2025, will be no different! I only buy what is an absolute must, zero wants and I only replace what has to be replaced. I still use my iPhone 10, she runs like a champ and cell service is through Visible @ $25 a month. I’ve drastically cut corners and I’m thankful for these lessons. There’s no going back.

Excellent idea for the coming year! I wonder if you might explore why buying feels so good to so many people (if you haven't already): is it just the dopamine effect? If it is, and we stop making non-essential purchases, how do we find a dopamine substitute? Also, how about collecting? Why do people collect and is it always a negative thing (increasing clutter, purchasing non-necessities, etc.)?

I've been doing a no buy challenge for almost a decade now. I've been purging my closet and been giving clothes away to people who need them. I no longer donate to the thrift store since their prices have gone up and it's becoming unnafordable. However, I budget myself $50.00 a week to eat out. Other than thant, just the basics. for those of you who like to go to bars/clubs, budget yourselves. When I used to go, I would only take a $20.00, my ID, and that was it. That's how much I allowed myself to spend. That was enough to buy someone a drink, and myself a drink or two. I know times have changed, so maybe increase it to $25.00, but not an extra penny. Remember, every time you waste your money on something, it means someone else made money off of you.

My why is to get used to actually using the stuff I already own. I'm an expert on getting things that I really don't need that just sits there on the shelf or I'm very careful to use my things because I don't want them to get used up, but isn't that the point of stuff? I haven't tossed away or sold a thing for a very long time, the most recent thing I tossed was a pair of jeans that I had for 4 years and wore them a lot until it literally was nothing left. Found myself a new pair of favorite jeans at the flea market for 3 dollars, as new, only had a small hole in the crutch, probable from getting stuck on a barbed wire or similar and that was enough for the old owner to sell it. I sewed it and wear the jeans daily. That is my why, getting used to use the stuff I already have, read the books that I already own, watch the dvd's I already own, learn the board games that I already own, use my hiking equipment that I already own...

I did a low buy year last years where I was allowed to buy from certain categories within a fixed budget (for example books with a monthly budget of 30€). I managed to save 1500€ which doesn't sound much but I'm a student who didn't manage to live within my monthly salary before and made debt. I also payed off my debt which was about 1000€. So in total I saved 2500. Next year I wanna do a no buy year because I want to build an emergency fund. My dog got quite sick a few weeks ago and we had to pay around 500€ for medical costs. I wanna be able to always pay his emergency medical bills without going into debt. This year I wanna unravel why every single inconvenience makes me wanna buy stuff. I wish you all the best and that you may achieve your financial goals!
@carnivorecaveman9 күн бұрын
Well, in this year 2024, I spent less than $300 on “stuff”... The most expensive item was a Silky Nata Outback Edition Hatchet, which cost $110. I needed it for bushcrafting. But based on the “one in - one out” minimalist principle, I immediately got rid of the Estwing hatchet I had until then, because the Nata also performs its function, and even much more efficiently! I also threw away an unnecessary knife and two smaller meat cleavers. So the Nata was indeed a good purchase, because it got rid of not only one but also several other things. Moreover, I got $12 for the thrown-away knife and $21 for the Estwing hatchet, so I can consider the Nata to have cost me this much - a total of $33 - less! The above-mentioned amount of approximately $300 does not include what I spent on food, of course.

I plan to do a No-Buy Year for 2025. Retirement is a few years away for my husband and we want to be better prepared when the time comes. We are already a frugal family but plan on really digging in this coming year. It is going to be exciting!

30 day no buy in January...for the purpose of saving 6 months' worth $ for an emergency fund. Concise explanation btw. Love the intermittent accent as well.

Thanks! When I look at the retention charts, I don't want any drops or fast forwards, so I try to be as concise as possible and finish it fast, haha!

I never buy that much, but I’ll be particularly in no-buy mode for the next four years. With the orange clown in office, prices are going to skyrocket.

Time: 3 months-Jan, Feb, March Why: I should be able to fully fund my IRA for the year by April and not have to worry about it till next January.

I did a no buy year and my wife said "by by dear". Lolol. Great video for disciplining yourself. I think The no by year is the ultimate test. I would start out in baby steps such as do a no by month, a no by quarter and then if you can step it up to a no-by half year year-on to something. Just like with Marathon training you need to build up overtime, you just can't run the 26.2 from the get-go.

I plan to do a low-buy. I feel I'll set myself up for failure with the terminology of 'NO' buy. Why I'm doing it? To build restraint in frivolous spending and have an emergency fund/investment portfolio

I don't even wanna think about the no of books I've bought this year. It's embarrassing 😂My priority is no books. If I can pull it off I'd be so proud of myself 😇

I did it a few years ago when I had thrice less money. So that was one year without alcohol, for instance.
