Yes, people in the U.S. are going to be forced to be frugal and give up a lot of things in the next few years. Companies lowering their prices and giving up their huge profits is not going to happen here. The phenomenon of people voting against their own best interests has pretty much guaranteed that, here in the "greatest country on Earth."

Unfortunately given the way campaigns are funded, nobody running has anything but their donors' interests at heart, regardless of what they might say to get (or not get as the case may be) elected.

We've stopped eating out altogether and not only for financial reasons. It's easier to control portion size at home, eat mindfully (i.e., not gulping down your food), and know exactly what you're eating and how it has been prepared. Excellent video as always and eager to see your new place, when you get there!

We also don't eat out or do take out either. We also make sure we use everything in our fridge every week, Sunday is suprise dinner day, it's surprising how odd food items go together & some even end up being a fav.

The ritual of making a coffee in the morning is almost more enjoyable than the coffee. My mom said when we were kids she would force us to stay in our room and she would just sit next to the coffee pot to hear it brew. And that was what kept her sane while raising us!

The no going out point is so real 😭, I started to cook more food at home, it’s way to expensive to eat out rn, if you go and eat out at least twice a week with your partner it can be 200$ easy, it’s crazy.

So true!! We went to Olive Garden (yes that place haha) and it was ridiculously expensive for basically noodles. It was like $180 for 3 adults and 4 kids meals. We only eat out to very mediocre places (Olive Garden, Golden Corral, etc) for special occasions. The times of going to fancy places are done for me.

What a concept, hold onto your things until they break. If people did this, we wouldn't have overflowing landfills. If you can afford it, buy the best quality so you don't have to replace things every 6 weeks. Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without. Everyone should memorize that.

Groceries are insane. Even for one person I can't seem to shop for less than $150-300 here in Canada. It's all about dried beans, lentils, and low cost staples you can batch cook and freeze. I agree when it comes to spending on snacks. But I think all they will do is increase shrinkflation 😆

I have already started doing all the things you mentioned. I choose to vote with where I spend my money. I’m tired of the corporate greed. I can do without. I doubt things will ever go back to pre pandemic prices. Maybe this is our reset because consumerism has gotten way out of hand. The thing that bothers me the most is the rising cost of food. Because we all have to eat for survival. I can without the new car or the new iPhone but I can’t do without food.

I started making biscuits at home for my daughter’s afternoon meal. Before I was buying in bulk trying everything to lower the cost as everything is getting more expensive. Then I noticed that the taste started changing (lower quality ingredients) and then I saw that it’s 80-90% carbohydrates and fat 45% sugars 😮 I’m not paying 12€/ kg for sugar and palm oil. And it’s so easy to make at home. My biscuits are made with the best butter from gras feed caws from Normandie and it’s still only 6€/ kg.

I have to watch your videos in multiple steps because I have 4 loud little kids making circles around me. In other words, I think 1 trend (unsure if you have mentioned it in this video) will be that people are also just quitting traveling. People say they need it for mental health but debt for travel will put them in worse mental health than before their trip. My family of 6 hasn’t been anywhere for the last 2 yrs because everywhere is too expensive. We go to very cheap local and free things to us because a trip would be $5k for just a week. And the “Europe” vacation everyone seems to do all the time would be over $10k for just for tickets.

You're absolutely right about holding on to a phone until it breaks. I have a Samsung Galaxy S8 I bought it either at the end of 2017 or beginning of 2018 (cant remember the exact time). It's been acting up for the last 3 years but I completely refuse to get another one. It does everything I need. I am not on social media, therefore I am not on my phone that much. Certain apps are not compatible with my phone anymore, like Homebase app for my restaurant job. But I was able to log in from my laptop and I do not need to buy a new phone just so I can have this app.

I think eating out has been on a decline for several years now. I can remember when you'd try to go to a popular place and have to wait for 30-45 minutes to get a table. Now we rarely have to wait more than a couple minutes. I honestly think that eating out was much more popular for boomers and as that generation is dying off, it just doesn't have the importance it used to with younger generations. Then with the pandemic, a lot of people learned to cook because they had to and now due to the economy, they are continuing to.

As a Boomer I chose to not spend hard earned/saved $$$ on eating out…maybe for a Special Occassion but sadly have found the food isn’t any better than what I can prepare at home. 😉

Perhaps that's a big part of the problem too. Prices have gone up and quality has gone down. So much of what you get now, especially at chains, is already prepared and in a portion control plastic bag when it gets to the restaurant. And not very good. All they do is heat it up.

you know what's interesting, it seems, history often repeat itself. how many people forecasted that a pandemic would happen again 100 years later since the Spanish Flu around 1918. and in the 1920s, the great depression happened where most people are poor and unable to afford food, clothes and housing. think about it, even though we were better off than 100 year ago (medical & technology advances), but, if you compare today's standards, we're kind of starting to live like in the great depression. when prices increase, people would stop spending. almost everyone is tightening their belts. people fear that in the future they have to cope for higher expenses and stopped spending today and save more. with lesser spending, business suffer due to less income and with high cost, more business had to close their shop. more closure means lesser jobs, and this would lead to economic downturn. i do think a great depression would come, albeit not suffering like 100 years ago but in a modern sense of time.

There's a book sort of about this called, "The Fourth Turning," by William Strauss and Neil Howe. It's about generational theory and how humanity can be classified in four different phases (or turnings). Humanity goes through this constant cycle of building, taking things for granted, destroying, and fighting to rebuild. You should check the book out, it might be of interest to you!
