Much like Tree Sentinel, the first Furnace Golem you find is likely meant to be a lesson that not everything needs to be fought the instant you see it, and it's fine to leave and come back later. Introducing the new Scadutree Blessings system probably needed a bit of a speedbump like this to get players to realize how important they'd be for the rest of their journey in the Land of Shadow.

It definitely seems like the dragons' body may be a key component in animating the golems, especially since the Guardian Golem's emit a disembodied draconic roar sound from inside their own burning cores as they're standing around idle, too. Even the idea of Spirit Ashes being summonable from the remains of their ashes explicitly seems to reinforce that core concept. The Furnace Golems also make the detail in the Surging Frenzied Flame especially noteworthy, _“Spirits are eternal, and yet the frenzied flame melts them away regardless. No wonder the hornsent forbid the flame's use.”_
@zoid_on_youtube5 ай бұрын
theres also the idea that dragon corpses remain "alive" to some extent, which is why you can draw power from their hearts and people who do will one day transform into magma wyrms, overwhelmed by the dragons vital essence or somesuch. Bayle is powerful enough that the description of his heart outright states that he will basically be fully reincarnated into whoever consumes the heart. So it seems reasonable to think that this "vital force" in the dragons corpse might be what animates the golems.

@@zoid_on_youtube So what you're saying is this is maybe a dead dragon's equivalent of a dreadnaught from the 40k universe.
@PierceArner5 ай бұрын
@@zoid_on_youtube Not to dive TOO deeply into the weeds, but the core difference between the Faith-based Lightning of the Dragon Cult (and Placidusax's Ruin) Vs. the Arcane-based Blood/Flame primal manifestations of Dragon Communion (and Bayle's Tyrrany) primarily come from the Daoist dualism of Hun & Po Souls, the former being the ethereal Yang soul made of light, and the later being the physical Yin soul that remains linked to the physical corpse. Japanese adaptations of Western Fantasy magic systems almost always intertwines with Chinese Onmyodo for the foundation of the Yin/Yang themes of dark & light (and often the lunar & solar and/or female & male themes) that tie into the depictions of magic (which varies widely based off of if it's utilizing the classic Four Elements, the Chinese Five Elements, or the Shinto Five Elements as an elemental foundation, or creating something else entirely). Even the two draconic transformation items reflect this with the Priestess Heart (Dragon Cult) _“The priestess was once an ancient dragon herself, but sacrificed that form for feeble flesh to aid in the destruction of Bayle the Dread.”_ where she even offers her sleep to Placidusax, vs. the Stone Heart (Dragon Communion) _“The last thing the partaker saw with human eyes was a sunset, its colors faded and tarnished - a remote thing from eternity.”_ So the concept of inextinguishable fire being oppressively catalyzed by setting a dragon corpse on fire definitely holds, but especially with the lesser dragons as they're associated with fire & the Arcane (vs. the ancient dragons centered around lightning & Faith), and their power can be transferred through destruction & integration with physical material (vs. being clad in lightning as a gift like Vyke & Godwyn were).
@zoid_on_youtube5 ай бұрын
@@PierceArner thats really interesting, I didnt know about those inspirations behind Fromsofts depiction of dragons, but it makes a lot of sense. But it also makes Bayle especially interesting as he seems to posess traits of both Ancient and modern dragons. I think hes supposed to be the originator of the modern dragon species, and even his breath is both fire and lightning at once. Do you have any insight on how that might play into that Yin-Yang interpretation of the dragons?
@PierceArner5 ай бұрын
@@zoid_on_youtube So the Fulgurbloom flowers are Lightning (Fulgur) representing the Ancient Dragons' power, whereas the Calorblooms blossoming from the heat of the Dragon Communion dead are Heat (Calor), showing that sort of division. Bayle's Talisman explicitly raises the damage of magma, which is something that's actually specific to ONLY Wyrms - individuals who have transformed their entire bodies from Dragon Communion and are basically vomiting up their own blood that's turned to magma. Theodorix the Troll was the Great Wyrm, but this is something that pushes well beyond that. The conflict between the Ancient & Lesserborn Dragons initiated the practice of Dragon Communion because they employed humans to hunt down and murder their lesser bretheren with harpoons and gave them the tools to purge them. Something Bayle does that no other dragons do is that he practices Dragon Communion. Even the massive dragon by where the Priestess is found has its heart eaten out, and countless others are slaughtered on the way up the peak to where Bayle is. Two of Placidusax's heads are fused to Bayle's back, which I think is how he's utilizing the power of lightning, but especially to the degree he is. (The other lesser Dragon that's fighting with its brother where you encounter Igon is also using orange lightning as it seems to be following Bayle's practice of attempting to feed on its own kind). Omen-like horns curl around Bayle's face, and his physicality & posture are decidedly more human-like compared to the Lesser Dragons. His shattered limbs mean that he's even using Dragon Communion techniques in order to manifest wings artificially to be able to fly in his Phase 2. While he may have been a Lesser Dragon who fought to survive, given his unique facial design, personally I think Bayle the Dread was a human who was the most ruthless slayer of the Lesser Dragons - but even through Communion from his victories as he grew more & more draconic in power… it only meant that the Ancient Dragons who employed his services grew to despise and hate him even more as he became representative of everything they hated in their lesser Bretheren. Thus his ire eventually grew to align with the feelings of those he hunted, but he held no love for them, only envy. Being the enemy of everyone now made his emotions turn into a seething hatred of everything even as he desired it's power, which is why the Elder hornsent ghost in the shack where his talisman is found aligns with him rising up against the classism and tearing down everyone else. Physically, everything about Igon's destroyed body, his inner Drake nature, his helpless fear, and using rage to give himself power again are SUCH an overt parallel to Bayle himself, that I can't imagine he's not human, especially given the new items that allow for full draconic physical transformations being added as a part of this questline.

I wonder if that specific Hornsent who said these cruel words to the shamans lived long enough to be subject to similar cruelties by Messmer’s crusaders when they invaded. I don’t know how long Hornsent lived but assuming he lived to see the crusade take place, I can only imagine it shifting from him whipping shamans with tooth whips and shoving them in jars like it's an ordinary day to him being captured by the crusaders before enduring days of being beaten and branded by serpent flails while being yelled at with slurs and obscenities by them such as being “Graceless scum” who’s only purpose is to be hunted, dehorned, impaled and burned before being forced to march alongside fellow Hornsent who’ve been rounded up, beaten, branded and dehorned to a furnace golem that has yet to come to life. As the Hornsent are being pushed and crammed inside the golem to the point where’s it’s getting hard to breathe, they are given a speech by a Black Knight captain who says that though they are graceless vermin with no place in the order, their lives will at least serve one purpose: as kindling for their holy crusade. The Hornsent suddenly reminisces on those shamans back in Bonny Village and realizes that he has become a victim to the same cruelties he inflicted on them. However, he has no time to think of his current predicament as the crusaders set the golem aflame and the screams of countless Hornsent and the stench of their burning flesh fill the air as the golem comes to life. So ends the life of one Hornsent among thousands, now used to fuel a lifeless machine of death and murder as it marches onto the battlefield. And so, the crusade continues.

The design of the furnace golems seems to be a sort of twisted karmic retribution towards the Hornsent approved by Messmer and Marika. The shamans were mutilated, then stuffed into jars to become saints by the Hornsent so in response, Marika orders her son Messmer to wage a brutal, genocidal war against the Land of Shadow with his most prominent war machine being the massive furnace golems where the Hornsent themselves are rounded up in droves, dead or alive (but most likely still alive for extra cruelty), to be stuffed in the golems and lit aflame to bring it to life. Imagine the screams and howls of terror and agony and the smell of burning flesh as the golem surges to life; An instrument of death’s first gasps of “life” brought forth by the deaths of so many within its frame to serve as fuel for the golem as it marches over the land as an instrument of terror, destruction and mockery as it wears the horned mask of the fell god of fire the Hornsent so feared.

Glad to see you made a video on thse golems they're one of the coolest enemy deisgns I've seen but they're also annoying to fight if you don't have an advantage to throw pots at them lol. Interesting how they're almost as big as the fire giant though they seem a bit bigger and tougher, idk I like big enemies. They are bosses technically but I don't get why they don't get boss healthbars? I also like how each one is different to fight or getting harder the more you explore from early to late. The tears are nice tho I wished you could farm the visage for the pots because they're not plentiful and I wanna do a pot build. Well thank you Zuilie for the lore and this video.

Regarding the absence of horns, perhaps the sustained fires eventually caused the horns to crumble away? Alternatively, the horns were cut beforehand as a way to torture and humiliate prisoners. Thanks for covering the first major enemy in the DLC! For a future video, I think it'd be neat to look at one of the first major landmarks, that crux monolith in front of the Scadutree Chalice. It and the chalice seem oddly underused.

this is super interesting. I feel like the storytelling that this is trying to convey is totally that these were made AFTER the golden orders war on the fire giants and the dragons (as they both are used in the crafting of the furnace golems, heads of the fire giants, and the dragon in the furnace golems cauldron.) makes me think these aspects of the golden orders wars are deliberately placed there to give us that idea.

@@DefiantYeast0426 *spoiler Warning ahead* Well, until the drop of Shadow of the Erdtree it was common for people to make fun of Mohg for wanting his kid-half-brother as consort. Now that we know Mohg was charmed by Miquella to do everything he's done just so his "fresh body" could be used as a flesh puppet for Radahns soul, who Miquella then took as his consort the community took a *DRASTIC* turn. People now cheer/pity Mohg for being a victim from birth to death and still kicking ass and "hate" on Miquella for being a weirdo who kills people left and right while always being able to appear as innocent and incapable of even doing bad things as possible. Miquella is practically the Griffith of the Elden Ring Verse and he forced Radahn to be his Guts.

It's funny how the community can never escape the cycle of "X character good, Y character bad" and even when they change their minds it's just to flip between who's bad and who's good. still very confused about this connection people make regarding a small scene in berserk, when the concept of wickermen in mythology is surely just common knowledge? i feel like the majority of people just know about wickermen in general,

Miyazaki has never been shy about taking inspiration from Berserk. While it probably could've happened without Berserk featuring one, it's easy enough to assume Berserk probably did put a mental pin in it for him.
@Zigeuninja5 ай бұрын
because Miyazaki likes Berserk and there are a bunch of references to it in both Elden Ring and his previous titles. I really don't think that most people know about wickermen so the odds that he got the idea from Berserk isn't that unlikely.
@VictorIV03105 ай бұрын
Far too often, many people conflate mythological references and archetypes to Berserk references which can be quite annoying and a bad showing to Berserk, despite some undeniable influence in Fromsoft’s Souls games. For example, many players have claimed that the circle of large stone swords sticking out of the ground near the starting area as a memorial to Kentaro Miura, Berserk’s author, who died relatively shortly before the game was released and who Miyazaki has noted as an influence; it's not uncommon for players to take screenshots of their characters at the circle or to leave messages near it to "pay respects." This is pure speculation, and no one on the development team has stated it to be such. Not only that, but the circle by the starting area is only one of several monuments that appear throughout the game. Although swords planted in the ground as gravestones do appear in Berserk, the ones in Elden Ring bear a much stronger resemblance to the sculpture “Sverd i fjell” in Norway, in keeping with the Norse themes seen throughout the game.
@wtfryley5 ай бұрын
@@ZullietheWitch i think its definitely fair to say that there are huge inspirations throughout the entirety of the souls games. but i just think the concept of a wickerman is far bigger than a pretty small reference in berserk, so to me it just feels like a big stretch to pin it as the reason for why he included it. its hard to say for sure either way ofc, but imo it seems very unlikely this is a reference to berserk, rather than a reference to very well known mythology (similar to if someone including Zeus in a game was cited as a reference to God of War, rather than just obvious Greek Mythology)
@ZullietheWitch5 ай бұрын
@@wtfryley It may be wrong to say it's "why" he included it, but I think there are goods odds it's snow in or on the snowball that led to it being included, if that makes sense.

My best guess as to the sap being crystallized into tears would be as a form of pine resin burning and solidifying as tears. They could have used it as a propellant to start the fires burning, as pine resin is also highly flammable. Funnily enough, there's ample sap flowing from the Scadutree.

I just had an idea that could explain a lot. What if Merika’s grand betrayal and “original sin” was burning down the original erdtree? The erdtree is already just a golden illusion with a burnt husk at the base, and Lyndell is covered in ash when we first get there. Her rule was marked by two eras, the age of the erdtree, where Merika used the erdtree sap to give plenty to the world, and the age of the Golden Order, where the erdtree is just a golden illusion. Not to mention Enya calls the burning of the erdtree the original sin in dialogue.

The fact that these are not just a mockery of the hornsent, but also of one of the other races Marika genocided (horrifying that there are multiple it almost frames how the revenge is just part the power grab in her blind desperation for what she saw as retribution) is quite powerful artistic direction. Truly a horrendous look at the kind of lengths some will go to for revenge and to maintain their own positions of authority, needless to say this oppression led to generations of terrorists and more cycles of violence..
