Why do we assume his legs turned into sea legs? We never see his legs prior. He is always framed such that his legs aren't seen. We also know that all children of Marika are cursed, all of them. So it stands to reason that Godwyn has had his own Outer God curse of sort. Specifivially deathblight. Deathblight seems to predate Godwyn, based on the fact Deathrite Birds have a deathblight attack. It is the Deathroot that is the new thing that has appeared. This isn't my idea, i can't recall where, but this theory and much more comes from another youtuber. EDIT: Garrulous Goldmask is the one i got it from

I honestly am kind of disappointed they didn't bring Godwyn back in the DLC to be an enemy we fight, since it seemed through out the main game Miquella's goal was to free his loved brother. Plus I think Godwyn would have made for an awesome boss fight, considering he could of been a true avatar of death.
@boris-dragosaniАй бұрын
Another cool thing. Godwyn's body doesn't lack a soul any more. When Godwyn was buried in the Erd Tree's roots, he not only corrupted the erd tree, but also erd tree burial. Souls can no longer pool into the erd tree. They are obstructed by death root, which revives their bodies. This would be a problem, if not for Godwyn's soulless corpse. It acts as a safe haven for those who live in death. The thousands of abandoned souls have pooled into Godwyn’s corpse, granting them an afterlife with each other. A thousands souls banded together, desperate to protect their safe haven. If you attack the corpse, or Fia, the vengeful souls come crashing out to protect their home. A dead God's body acting as a new after life for souls lost to time. This game never ceases to amaze me.

@theburgerking1236 not really a god of death. He isn't reaping souls, or collecting the dead in the same manor. His body is more like a living Heaven or Hell. A storage for souls. Also, it isn't really Godwyn anymore. Godwyn is gone, all that remains is a living dead cropse. And a god must have a soul
@citizenvulpes4562Ай бұрын
@@boris-dragosani You do realize that if his Body is what's housing souls, he himself is the one collecting said souls, intentional or not, right? There's a reason the underworld in Greek Myth shares a name with it's ruler, (Hades, both the God and the underworld is named Hades, Tartarus and Elysium are housed within Hades) it's because they're one in the same. Another thing, you're wrong, a God in Elden Ring doesn't need a soul, evidence being that Ranni escaped her fate of becoming a God by slaying her FLESH, and not her soul. A god in Elden Ring needs FLESH to have any influence, and Godwyn has an overabundance of it. Godwyn was not an Empyrean, but, Empyreans are stated to be candidates to be new gods of the GOLDEN ORDER, you don't need to be an Empyrean to ascend to Godhood, just need to be one to become God of the Golden Order/Greater Will/Two Fingers. Miquella also discards his flesh to avoid being a God of the Golden order, but then he enters through the gate of divinity and comes out as an ascended God of his own order of compassion, however that does not come into fruition because of the Tarnished. One Empyrean we see that doesn't discard her flesh, but ascends to Godhood seemingly naturally is Malenia, maybe the Two fingers would have worshiped her as a new God with an order of Rot. One thing that's common with all three of these stories is that two of them discard their flesh to avoid becoming a certain God, and the one that DOESN'T discard their flesh is the one that becomes a God through no means but her own. It seems to me that you need FLESH to be a God in Elden Ring. If I'm not mistaken, Godwyn is stated several times in dialogue to be a sort of God of death anyway, even if he has no soul.

Something interesting, is Malformed Draconic helmet. Its item description, along with the depiction of a long haired, mermaid tailed, man dragon on it, makes me think that this is actually in the likeness of Godwyn. With the stone heart items being introduced in DLC, perhaps Godwyn, too, was able to assume a half draconic form, not unlike the depiction of the one just mentioned. That same depiction also resembles Godwyn's undead body, as it is now. Perhaps Godwyn, in being affected by the soul killing power of half the rune of death, caused his body to go haywire, and trigger his half transformation, or perhaps he was in the process of transforming to protect himself from the Black Knives. Anyways, I always found that Helmet to be important to Godwyn's lore.
@Arkeon77022Ай бұрын
From what we know, I still like to believe Godwyn was a bro and his murder unjust considering the fact that: 1. Essentially sparing what would be his equivalent of Midir/Bayle, he outdoes us by also founding the Dragon Cult, which houses the most powerful magics in the game. Thus, Fortissax and Lansseax are still guarding his home. 2. Fia is protected by rancor skulls by Godwyn himself, as if she was important to her (maybe his partner in life?). Considering the fact that the Mariners are amongst the oldest gravekeepers (from Charo's Hidden Grove), I like to think that Ranni's stunt evolved those Lost in Death (an older form of death) to the newer Deathroot Live-in-Deaths. What we have now is just a broken man trying to find peace without his soul.

What I don't understand is that the Deathrite Birds actually can cause Deathblight build-up with their shriek, meaning that Deathblight predates Godwyn's death and is a natural element of the LB (as is also evidenced by the Dancing Lion in Rauh). So does that mean that there is a "King of Death" or Outer God to Deathblight? Godwyn is the "prince", ergo meaning the heir apparent.
@kitteecatt4681Ай бұрын
there is the God of the death birds, the being mentioned in the twin bird kite shield. it might be that Godwyn’s title of prince just means that he has not yet ascended to the same godhood as Marika, who is called Queen. it might be that he becomes the god of the age, and King of death, when the tarnished ascends to lordship with fia’s centipede rune

As far as Gurranq's storyline is concerned we gave him ALL of the deathroot in the world. He thinks that is all of the fragments BUT we know it is not. Ranni still has part of it with her corpse and Godwyn's half eventually ends up with Fia. There is a narrative oversight, if we complete Fia's quest and she birth's her mending rune, we should be able to give that too Gurranq and that actually should fix him. It would be cool if we could offer that up as long as it is before we turn in the last deathroot. I find it interesting that the Wormfaces of Altus hang out near the "Woodfolk Ruins" Perhaps prior to Godwyn's burial they were Tree people. Only snag to that is there are no uninfected Woodfolk, Erdtree Guardians maybe.
@thechadvoltaires8930Ай бұрын
Yeah but if we gave it tk him, we would not get fias endong which is actially good since it stops deathroot corruption and brings in the rune of death back into the world. You dont just go there like a trip. Sure theres a DTS so there must be some way but still, theres a whole colony of worm faces

@Writh811Ай бұрын
@@ShadowProject01 If by Deathroot collection you mean fragments of the Rune of Destined Death, very much so. If you straighten out the brands and line them up they look like a deflated version of the Rune of Death that appears in Malekith's arena. To go further, Ranni stole a fragment of the rune of death. Godwyn and company only got a taste of half of it, the part that kills souls. Ranni kept the part that kills bodies for herself. Gurranq has only been collecting soul-killer fragments. What's more is he's only been chasing the small bits that are just breaking off the larger problem. I find it interesting that Godwyn spawns Those Who Live in Death but I feel like Ranni's side of thing should have made "Those Who Remain" Souls without bodies to offer to the roots. But maybe that is what all the dialogue ghosts are meant to be without directly saying it.
@citizenvulpes4562Ай бұрын
@@Writh811 The ethereal Jellyfish are said to be souls of perished and lost children, plus every spirit summon you can own. The summoning bell that is used to summon these spirit ashes is also given to you by Ranni. Torrent himself is a spiritual being, same with Melina. There are a lot of "Those Who Remain" but they seem to be completely disconnected from the Rune of death itself. They walk the earth, Bodiless (Melina being burned and Bodiless sorta like Ranni) I'm guessing that the Rune of death is really meant to disconnect the physical from the spiritual completely. It kills the body, a vessel for the spiritual, preventing an empty vessel from growing beyond it's means, and kills the soul preventing the soul from interacting with anything that is still physical. When the Rune of Death was plucked from the Elden Ring, it turned natural for citizens of the lands between to surrender their soul and body to the roots of the erdtree, but one thing that's mentioned is that those that "live in death" choose to revive their own bodies, and presumably also have their soul, while "Those Who Remain" really ONLY have their soul and are also usually found protecting the erdtree or other important areas, while the ones that live in death are kind of a nuisance, attacking the living. I'm guessing "Those Who Remain" aren't looked down upon so heavy because they're simply souls who've accepted that their physical body is gone, while those who live in death generally take up space and attack the living. Plus souls can't exactly spread, like a physical organism can.

I like this idea that the reason why Godwyn's corruption is within stormveil castle is because when Godrick fled from Leyndell, he took treasures and relics with him. With relic also being a term for corpse parts, Godrick may have stolen a piece of Godwyn's remains which then mutated at the bottom of the castle as the room had been covered up in curtains. Since Godrick was obsessed with the golden lineage, having a piece of Godwyn may be a valid point. So these visages which do not look like the actual Godwyn were buried/stolen pieces of Godwyn's corpse. And since there is no other trace of Deathroot infestation except for that face, this might be pretty clear. The growth that has eyes is directly connected to Godwyn or had direct contact with him, while those without eyes have been carried away by some circumstances.

It's more headcanon than even theory, but I believe that Godwyn found out about the plot and for his own reasons decided to spring the trap. As a man who earnestly believed in peace (see Fortissax) he could not bring himself to provoke another war by revealing the plot, after which his loyal troops would rally to him. Or perhaps he went along with it to help Marika and/or Ranni (that part of the lore is a whole can of worms on its own) I can also see him offering himself as part of a deal to spare his men (at the time, Draconic tree sentinels and many Leyndell troops) This is just how I feel about this character's motivations. He reminds me of Ned Stark and that, regardless of his ultimate decision he does it for how he sees best for "the realm" , I think him having knowledge of events is more intriguing than "he was the golden boy, now he's dead"

How nice finally people are understanding the connection between Kegare and Souls games. And about it, just think this: In Dark Souls 1, Solaire says, in japanese, Time is Stagnant. Water, Sea, Dephts... Aldricth...Little bug monsters in the cathedral of Depths...Bloodborne that is literally all about Blood, Death, Pregnancy etc that are great sources of Kegare, and not a case that corruption comes from stagnation too... Damn this author loves this concept. Also, fun fact: Prince, the word, comes from Latin, from Primus, the first. And Godwyn is the """first""" of the Demigods to die, as Nito was the first of the Dead.

One thing to point out. Godwyn was supposed to be a Martyr. And the Iris of Occultation proves that grace can be granted in two very different ways. Maybe, Godwyn was supposed to undergo the ritual so he could completely shun himself from the light of grace, which would grant him grace in a different way. Just like Mesmer. Which would make Godwyn a "Martyr" for the Shadowy aspects of Grace. So the Erd Tree could finally embrace its more dark and shadowy aspects. But Ranni schemed to prevent this, and the rest is history.

Interesting to think about the similarities between deathblight and rot, specifically the way you talk about crossing the boundary between life and death giving way for stagnation and pollution. This immediately brings to mind rot and the pests that spring from it! The way I understand it rot is a process of rebirth in the lands between. Perhaps that is what is happening with death blight, rot is the rebirth of the body while deathblight is the rebirth of soul. They seem too similar as these decomposing slowly spreading forces to not be related in some greater way.

Ah, but you forget one of the most important allusions in Godwyn’s design, one intimately tied into kegane. Specifically, the Heikegani, or Heike Crabs. Heikegani are a real crab species native to the Seto inland sea, so named due to the pattern on their carapaces that resemble a samurai’s menpo when viewed from above. Legend has it that these crabs (or at least the pattern) are the result of the lasting enmity of Taira samurai who drowned off the coast of Shimonoseki during the great naval battle of Dan No Ura in 1185. At this time, Japan was experiencing a civil war between the Heike (aka Taira) and Genji (aka Minamoto) clans, both jockeying for control of the emperor as a puppet. Dan no Ura was the decisive battle of this conflict, wherein Genji forces intercepted the Heike at Shimonoseki while they were transporting the then six year old emperor Antoku and the three regalia of the imperial line (a magatama, a mirror, and the legendary sword Grasscutter). Subjected to rains of arrows from the Genji fleet and utterly cornered, the young emperor and Heike samurai jumped into the sea rather than be captured, and took two of the three royal regalia with them (the mirror only being saved due to the retainer tasked with guarding it surrendering without a fight). Ever since, the patterns on the crabs in that region were attributed to the angry ghosts of the doomed Heike clan. Given how big this incident was in Japanese history and all the other native influences on Fromsoft’s products, I can’t imagine a scenario where Godwyn’s features appearing elsewhere AREN’T an allusion to the Heikegani legend.

I always had a fun head canon that we were Godwyn's soul that found a new body. Which is why unlike the tarnished that come across the sea in boats from the Badlands, we wake up in a Chapel next to what used to be Godwyn's castle. But now.. Now we have the Secret Rites Scroll. Marika needs a Lord to free her. Godwyn's soul died, but what the fuck does that even mean? There are plenty of Those who live in Death who can move and cast spells. And what is the difference between those who live in death, and the clearly zombie soldiers and the like that are everywhere? If those who live in death died in soul, their bodies would be motionless. If they died in Body, they would need a new vessel like Ranni. It definitely feels like we're one of the last Tarnished to come into the circumstances of the Lands Between. As the Crusades on the Hornsent took place after the Death of Godwyn, Marika reclaimed the lost knowledge of this Rite. And now her escape plan can happen. Godwyn who would be lord, who could perfectly wield sorcereries, crucible incantations, overcome any foe. I always thought he was meant to be Consort to Ranni. BAM! Godwyn's soul is placed into a new vessel. But with the body still alive, none of the memories of the flesh went along with the soul. We can break the laws of the world. We can kill things and they stay dead. We can tear the souls out of mighty foes. We can learn any Spell or Incantation. And very importantly Deathblight and Attacks from Rune of Death Weaponry like the Black Knives, Maliketh's Black Blade, and Black Blade Kindred; cannot kill us permanently. This is because we are the Lord of Death.

Things like Ranni's knowledge of the Death Rune, Rykard's agents having access to Morgott's Shackle and the Blasphemous Claw...it is very clear WHO was supporting Ranni ( It was Marika, obviously. You can even see how Miquella was in on it too, intending for Ranni to give the spirit calling bell to Radahn. Possibly even intending for Torrent to end up with Radahn as well, as his former master). The reason for Marika shattering the Elden Ring was to impose a challenge on her children, and as we see...only Ranni and Miquella had ambitions of reaching "Outside the Box". No, I would say that Marika, when she learned what Ranni had kickstarted in only targeting Godwyn's Soul...she sent Mesmer on his way and then shattered the Elden Ring. That's why they continue to drop loot and souls. Spirit ashes don't exist in a vacuum. But named enemies do not respawn, those guys are just dead. This is why bosses don't respawn. For Christ's sake, 3 named NPCs die die to get this mending rune! The Duskborne, similar to Ranni, are just selfish. They don't want to fix the Golden Order, just twerk it slightly so they're the ones on top now. Their disagreement isn't with the oppression, but that they're classified as oppressed, not oppressors. They take no issue with the treatment of Omens, for example, and have nothing to say about the Scarlet Rot, Frenzied Flame, or it raining aliens.

I think the DLC may give us some incite into this. The rune of death opposes the rune of life (marika's rune.) But both runes can grant grace. The iris of occultation and grace give us incite into this. If Ranni did not separate the powers of the rune of death, by killing both Ranni's body and Godwyn's soul, then it is very possible that Ranni would merely be granted a different type of grace. That a full ritual, killing body and soul of one god, is really just the total denial of grace, which grants another type of grace. I speculate it's the light of the helphen, grace for dead beings. So she would exchange control from the two fingers for control by some other god. It kinda defeats the whole point of the ritual. Also, we only need both halves of the rune of death if we want to create a new order in the elden ring, which implies that both halves of the rune make a type of grace, just like the perfect rune of mending and seedbed rune. Also, you are plenty smart. You just need to be bold enough to make mistakes, form unique conclusions and say what you think. It's not your intelligence that limits you, but your freedom and creativity. And those 2 things can very easily be improved.

I've been having two nagging suspicions about godwyn. 1st, was that he and Ranni were set to marry or even that they were in love but their love was forbidden, ala Romeo and Juliet. 2nd I suspect that the eye motif is in reference to the Evil eye of eastern Mediterranean beliefs.

Worm faces were Lindell citizens who cannibalzied death blighted corpses

@@Hekk. worm faced enemies originate from Lyndell per their adorned robes - after the war in the capital, it ravaged the land as you can see from all the pot marks and perfumer bolts - due to the ravages of war, it caused stagnation in the waters around the capitol which, due to the proximity to Godwyns corpse, proliferated deathblight. The worm faces primarily exist not only where one can find deathblight, but also near the particularly horrific parts of Mt Gelmir such as at the base of their tainted Erdtree. This connection between deathblight, ulcerated tree spirits, and war torn areas paints a picture of these creatures likely having been people driven to consume corrupted flesh in the death blighted regions they're located in (including farum azula)

One thing which I never found anyone mention is Death Knight's - Godwyn's bodyguards. Imagine having bodyguards when you're a definition of a Chad. These dudes have a very distinctive halo on thier weapons and helmets. Kinda look like mark of the centipede? Or even like a deathroot itself. It's so weirdly irregular. But attached to a halo. Like it's meant to represent something both holy (or of a God) and Godwyn's nature. Definitely not something belonging to the Golden Order. So... Is that implying that Godwyn had connection to Deathblight before his death? It kinda fits with how Marika's childrens curses. Godwyn might be the most wholesome and carrying of the bunch because he already harbored a horryfing curse. And he probably keeped it under control, because we don't see anything mentioning Living in Death before Godwyn's death. And then Ranni showed up, killed him releasing Deathblight alongside giving Marika a PTSD attack or her former family and friends BEING BRUTALLY MURDERED AND STAFFED INTO JARS. GOOD JOB RANNI! DAUGHTER OF THE CENTURY EVERYBODY! F this blue idiot, selfish thot... Edit: I'm still dissappinted we didn't get more content about Godwyn and Those Who Live in Death. But we needed a incest between brothers and Miqlester feet in 4K I guess...

To get away from the fingers and Greater Will, sacrifices must be made. If Godwyn was to live in death, then that was his fate to do so. I mourn for his loss, but he never seemed one for leadership, and as he is now, he'll never be the lord he should have been. In fact, he only reinforces the Greater Will now. A shame for sure as the duskborn have done no wrong. But imo, the unending sickness that is Outer God interference is the more important foe and to resist that fate is paramount to being truely free.
@mattbrady2011Ай бұрын
There is no undoing the duskborn as well. They are now a broken and curropted part of the LB. It gave Rani and us possible freedom and doomed Godwyn to eternal entombment, forever death, and being degraded to such a sad state. This is why I always do the duskborn ending and then flip to Rani so we can be done with the broken life and death cycle that the LB are currently cursed with. Being a zombie doesn't look fun. It looks like you're just either unfeeling or forever in horrible rotting pain. The kindest thing to do would be to discard this broken ring and instead follow a new focus. A focus that allows all to be accepted and allows them to be unmolested by Outer Gods. Like Marika wishes.
