There is nothing more terrifying than The Old Lore

Take heed to not forget our adage. Fear the old lore.

"A miko (shrine maiden) is a young priestess who works at a Shinto shrine. Miko were once likely seen as shamans, but are understood in modern Japanese culture to be an institutionalized role in daily life, trained to perform tasks, ranging from sacred cleansing to performing the sacred Kagura dance." in case anyone was wondering what "miko" means (cause i didnt know)

We need WAY more DLC lore videos. I am thirsty.

that definitely makes more sense. I'd figured the GreatJar description was just propaganda, like what people were told was the case, but this is clearer. I kinda wish the translation had just gone with the usual "miko = shrine maidens" thing.

Shrine maiden village sounds kind of unnatural in English. No-one would say "there's a shrine maiden village over there."

They could have gone with Shrine Village maybe.
@LastProtagonist4 ай бұрын
That'd bring up its own set of issues about whether any of the buildings in the village constitute a "shrine."
@WASDLeftClick4 ай бұрын
@@LastProtagonist That's very true. Western style shrines are usually very small and may or may not contain some relic of the person or deity venerated there. Japanese shrines can vary a lot in size and complexity, but neither definition seems to really fit. Neither does shaman at all. No wonder the translators struggled with this one!

I think Priestess fits better

What a coincidence. I went dark for over a month until I beat the DLC literally last night. I’ve been binging all of the Elden Ring creator’s videos I have missed all day. Happy to see you upload man

Miko huh? Does that mean it wouldn't be too far off to imagine Marika in a shrine maiden outfit? ...Artists get on this RIGHT NOW!

Fear the False Friends of Translators, aka the words that you think you know their translation, cos you saw other words with the same meaning. I feel like that was the case with the translation from Japanese to English every time
@blackeddeath4 ай бұрын
The ambiguity of that description always felt intentional to me, so this is pretty shocking to hear. I wonder why the localization team decided to translate *both* words into "shaman."

Thank God I was wondering about this, now it all comes together Who are the Kitoushi of the Gaols then? We see none right? Or are they the Putrescence Sorcerors?
