Absolutely. I love rougelikes but they are a pretty unique genre that is almost the antithesis of an RPG in a lot of ways. Totally understandable for people to be immediately put off. I would say that the discussion was doomed from the start though. You are going to have the FromSoft shills fighting for everyone to love the game, and then the Doomers who think From is now EA and it's all over and why couldn't they have made X instead of this. It's the internet, it's the Soulsborne community hahahah

I'll admit I'm still 50/50 on the game, and prob won't buy it at full price at least. It looks very story/lore-light and thats mainly what I play for. But, well first, I may be wrong there, so I'm keeping an open mind. And second, I encourage forms of experimentation in games - as some other Soultubers have said, it may even help to improve the next soulsborne's combat in future. I think that repackaging the game I know inside and out, with faster combat, empowered player characters, a quick 45-60min loop ROUGELIKE, is something that sounds incredibly fun. As a game dev, it makes complete sense to me to reuse the assets from Elden Ring and your other series in new and interesting ways. They've already stated they aren't interested on making a game the scale of Elden Ring again, so we can essentially rule out Elden Ring 2. So why not put those otherwise archived assets to another use on a game with a faster turn around?
@thatdanjamesguy.33018 сағат бұрын
Yeah, Elden Ring was too massive to get traditional sequels but it sold even more than Dark Souls. What they’re doing is a great way to capitalize on that without overscoping or selling out. If you consider Shadow of the Erdtree to be a full game in DLC form, we’re getting an unconventional but official Elden Ring 2 and 3 in record time.

I was originally worried and skeptical about it, but after reading interviews and how Miyazaki gave a level and combat designer "reign" to develop their first game and they wanted to make a multiplayer spin off of Elden Ring, I now feel more at ease knowing that this is something they wanted to do from the get go and Miyazaki greenlit the idea. Miyazaki isn't developing this game, as I'm sure Miyazaki is working on his own next big project, I see Nightreign as a small game for us to enjoy in the mean time while they're cooking up something big for Miyazaki's next release. Fromsoft has been expanding their studio, hiring more employees and raising salaries, giving more workers chances to develop their own projects, we're going to start see more releases from them and Nightreign is the first of that.

A RougeliKe is the "classic" image of a game in which you do runs and when you die or win, you return to the beginning and do it over again. Like, they could have just let people keep on using "roguelike" like they were used to and coin a new term like "rogue _clone"_ for games that don't have ANY carryover between runs, but no, they had to make sure everybody understood that what they loved was some neutered, bastardized thing compared to what THEY were into No, I don't have a chip on my shoulder about this, I dunno what you're talking about sjldghksdg

So basically each game needs to set itself apart from the other games. DS2 was on a different engine, so the animations were different. DS1 had the Intervonnected World, BB's gothic horror. We feared the same thing when Elden Ring came out. How will Elden Ring set itself apart. It used a lot of DS3 animations. It set itself apart using the open world and the scale. Like it or dislike it, its scale sets itself apart. Something similar is happening here. People seem worried about the asset reuse. But the bigger question is how is it different. My take 1. The combat is faster, no fall damage. 2. Preset characters. The combat can be more streamlined 3. The Roguelike nature. These three things will set the game apart. I haven't tried any roguelikes, but this announcement has urged me to try some out. I just downloaded Hades.

people really aren't looking at the best example of another game studio that made a game from scraps of the game before, Nintendo with majora's mask. when a game studio that prioritizes gameplay takes a risk like this, it isn't because they were just stupid and lazy, it's because they believe what they've made is a quality product. if fromsoft was just being arrogant and lazy, they wouldn't have immediately disclosed that it will not have micro-transactions, be a live service game, or will have any locked content on launch. the biggest sign that this isn't just them being lazy and greedy is the fact that they have already said that the game will cost around $30 to $40 instead of $70. greed doesn't cause a AAA studio to half the price of their own game, especially not because they believe the game's amount of content doesn't warrant the standard game price. that's a decision made from a place of genuine care for quality and a respect for their players. also... The most important aspect to me, other than being able to play solo, is the ability to practice the 3rd day bosses once you've encountered them like how you can train against Pure Vessel from Hollow Knight. I think it'll be very frustrating to keep dying on a boss if you need to spend another 45 minutes just to get back to it. However, as you said, this is Fromsoft; they've already proven to be aware of this potential issue with the Sekiro boss gauntlets so I'm sure that they'll implement something that aids the Git Gud deficient like me.

That's my main concern with Nightreign. I want solo players to get many attempts at the main bosses without having to go through the 3 days every single time they die. Fromsoft knows that it takes time to learn boss attack patterns, so I want to be able to get in as many attempts as I want. If this isn't the case, then we're looking at every "top ten worst Fromsoft boss runbacks" lists just being invaded by every boss in Nightreign.

@@datzfatz2368I'm gonna guess it definitely isn't a "tiny" amount of effort. It's not like you can just take off a third of all enemy health and be done with it. The actual ramifications of everything have to be considered. What happens if you take a "level" designed for 3 players to be able to explore in 15 minutes, and give it to 2 people instead? Will they get more loot per person? Or less? How about character synergy, when different characters have different roles? How much advantage can trio's take of this when compared to duo's? How much is boss AI's attention divided when playing with 3 vs 2 people. When fighting a boss as a trio, when the boss kills one of the team members, one can try and distract the boss while the other revives the fallen friend. How much harder does it become to revive each other when you are only with 2 people in a team? How much do you adjust health or damage to account for that? Sure, if they wanna half-ass it, it doesn't have to take much effort, but making it a near-optimal experience for 1, 2 *and* 3 people is a big big task.

The game’s difficulty scales dynamically, ensuring solo players face challenges tailored to their playstyle. Whether adventuring alone or with up to three friends, the goal is to survive three in-game nights filled with escalating threats and shrinking maps that force strategic decisions. So it behaves more like a Survival Action game than a rogue-lite. Think of Rise of the Tomb Raider's Endurance Mode I guess. Players can choose from eight unique heroes, each equipped with specialized abilities such as grappling hooks, explosive attacks, and more. These characters are designed for teamwork in multiplayer or versatility in solo play. Progression follows a roguelike system: each session begins at level 1, with upgrades earned during the run but reset afterward, ensuring high stakes and a fresh start every time. Set in a parallel world to the Lands Between, Nightreign introduces reimagined lore and familiar elements, including references to Dark Souls-style bosses. The maps are procedurally generated, providing varied environments and evolving challenges for endless replayability.

Nightreign is exactly the kind of AA game I've been wishing game studios would make more of - shorter games with smaller budgets sold at lower prices. The kind of project that allows studios to experiment with new gameplay concepts, train new devs, and let established devs demonstrate leadership abilities, all in a low stakes environment. How many times have we shared that 'I want shorter games with worse graphics made by devs who are paid more to work less' meme? Maybe Nightreign won't be for me, but so what if it isn't? I'm still glad it exists, and I hope it succeeds so FROM can feel confident letting more of their veteran devs helm weird little side projects, keeping the studio creatively fresh and letting more of their team develop directorial experience. After all, sooner or later Miyazaki is going to want to enjoy a well earned retirement.

Miyazaki has been saying in interviews that he’s not going to be directing every project. He said he wants to step back a little and have some younger talent do their thing. I think if Miyazaki was directing this no one would be thinking twice about it, but since he isn’t and it’s different everyone is guarded. Guarded rightfully so too! I can’t wait to play it though. I hope it’s better then it looks in terms as something I’m interested in, but I have faith!

I loved Arlo’s initial graphics reaction “this looks cheap, must be fromsoft” 😆 But seriously this game looks pretty cool, I’ll give it a try

so the ring thing is to cut off certain areas within a certain time. it's to facilitate "lower level areas" on the outskirts and those will be inaccessible after some time FORCING you to go to harder areas. I heavily dislike calling that a "fortnite ring" ... Basically - don't think of that kind of mechanic as a fortnite thing - more like a slay the spire thing, more like a roguelike thing, more like a vampire survivors thing. more like a wizard of legends thing... to me the game will be a 6-7/10 with the potential to be a 9/10 IF they actually have lore and story connected to these 8 characters you can play as and unlock stuff for. maybe even have the environmental story telling, you're just on a timer so you CAN spend minutes looking at paintings or carvings but at the cost of level progression on THAT run. you can't slowly explore THE WHOLE map in one match.... but you can go to south and explore and the next run go north.... and while they have said it won't have on going support - they COULD release MORE MAPS... like roguelikes, with 3 worlds but they add a 4th level/world they could add a 4th night or more characters or evolved characters.... the potential is huge. so give it a shot unless you vehemently hate timers, in a way where you could never play Majoras mask or Dead rising which have timers... they will have a solo mode...

They said that every character will likely have their own backstory, similar to Sekiro. It also will feature a codex, on which you can learn character lore.

I've had a feeling that this may have a slight bit of warhammer styling going on, with the Co op objectives you can load into.. And a possible character skill tree/upgrade system? Which I think will be pretty sick!

from soft games are already very arcade when you think about it, but they always hide it very well with interesting game design on top, even at its worst possible outcome nightreign seems like a lot of fun, and is not speculative fun, is fun we have been having already for a while, randomizers coop and boss rush modes are one of the most common unofficial experiences these games get from fans, nightreign is a chance of they get more in touch with what we wanted so they may learn more about that and start including these aspects in their games if its viable, idk man, even if I'm not that hyped for this one I'm very interested on what does it means for the studio and the future

Asset reuse gave us one of the most beloved games of all time in the form of Majora's Mask so it's hard to complain about it here. I don't expect this to be a new MM considering the divergence in genre and stuff, but you never know.

Sounds like they're going for something mostly mechanically focused instead of narratively focused. Maybe testing out more options for coop and improving the net code.

Im very excited that this game is a rougelike because they are one of my favorite game genres even if some people like Arlo don't like the idea of losing all their progress and starting over a good rougelike game will make you feel like you want to go again even after you die especially if it has meta progression and permanent upgrades to your character like in Hades.

Yea i think this game is really cool and I am glad fromsoft is trying something a little different. I have been a fan since DeS came out, and Ive always worried Fromsoft would get stale and stop innovating, but this game proves the future is bright for From. Nightreign feels like the perfect toy box for From to experiment with new concepts. I'm excited.

It's 100% there to make something out of hundreds of assets they got in their archives without consuming much development time and that's perfectly fine, if it funds their next big project even better, I'd rather they keep making these in between those massive RPGs than they end up having to put yucky triple A standard stuff in those games to keep the cost feasible

I don't know a lot about Elden Ring, I'm hoping to try it someday But a roguelite multiplayer game is a very weird combination to me. For me the appeal of a roguelite is playing it whenever, it's just a replayable game to play in your own time whenever you feel like it. I feel like if multiplayer is a big part of it then that'd be weird cause you can't play the roguelite whenever, you have to specifically schedule it with the other person and there's no specific end goal. Each player would have their own feelings about how much they want to replay the game Multiplayer co op games in general are great though 😄 It's fun to have a game you can enjoy together with a friend. I feel like it works better on a game with a specific end goal though

This sounds like the sort of thing I might try a bit if it was part of Elden Ring, but not something I'm likely to shell out more money for.
@illusive-mike19 сағат бұрын
I'm very pleased with this. The thing that keeps me from liking Elden Ring is its needlessly large world that makes any new run an unbearable commitment. And sure, limiting the time by putting you in an enclosing circle strips out most of the exploration aspect that has worked rather well in prior Souls games, but after Elden Ring in particular such a change feels great.
@BlackHei71120 сағат бұрын
All they have to say is that this is non canon, and I'm sure it'll be accepted. Otherwise some might get mad about all the retcons and lore breaks. Fromsoftware fans love their lore.

I'm skeptical when we get a Suicide Squad / The Avengers situation, where a studio goes from making well-designed single player experiences to enormously expensive multiplayer games that their studios further survival more or lass hangs on. Something they pour years and millions into and that breaks away from what they're good at in order to chase a market that was probably on it's way to saturation when they got thr idea in the first place. But this? It seems like they can do it pretty quick, modestly budgeted, and it allows them to experiment with new mechanics that can probably pay dividends in the next well-designed single player game they'll make. Yeah, I won't like it, but that's really all the risk there is here. It won't destroy the company, so it's really easy for me to swallow any bitterness I mighy have. Sometimes letting someone cook means they're gonna branch off into something you can't seallow, but as long as they're not burning down the kitchen in the process you can let them cook ONE weird meal bro. You'll survive ONE weird meal.

The roguelite aspect is interesting - I think this could be fun. Being (potentially) forced coop is disappointing. One of the strengths of From Software games has always been that multiplayer is optional.

The thing that will make or break this is netcode. If they can get the lag down, or just to wish here, if they can make it feel as tight as a LAN this will be great.

I trust them, too, and I think they’re entitled to a game that makes them a quick buck. After the success of Elden Ring and then giving us a DLC that’s literally another game, they’ve earned it. It’s not like they’re saying, “We’re a live service looter-shooter company now! No more single player souls games with rich campaigns and lore.” Heck, they’re even putting lore into this via the characters you can select. Sounds cool. Maybe this will be the Fortnite formula perfected. I’m open to it.
@fogheta22 сағат бұрын
Interviews have come out and say that it's in a parallel universe btw, even though it looks like it could be post Ranni ending I think they just want to treat it as something they can do whatever with. For the game itself, the fortnite thing is just closing the day and resetting all players every 15 mins pretty much. It's not a BR though, and shares like no other elements excluding the initial fly in thing. All I'm curious of though is that you can revive other members by hitting them in multiplayer, but don't know how that'll work solo. Really peak for me though who's just been replaying the game borderline non stop since it came out.

This almost feels like a response to the criticism that Elden Ring is less replayable than FromSoft's other games due to its sheer scale. Always wanted a boss rush mode for the main game, but looks to have a similar vibe and I'm here for it.

A lot of the people complaining don't realize how much change is actually being done. While a lot of the art assets are being reused, it's the stuff underneath that's seeing the biggest change. The bosses being taken from other Souls' titles need their ai reworked to fit the faster pace and multiple players, familiar areas are all being modified to fit the new mobility options and gameplay quirks (and are just being changed in general), and the co-op gameplay requires Fromsoft to finally make a proper multiplayer framework that everyone's been asking for since forever. The most popular mods for most Souls' games are co-op and randomizer/boss rush ones. They just turned it into a standalone game with no microtransactions/live-service nonsense, better movement, better replayability, and a new framework that will be usable in future titles if it works well in this one. We could end up with Fromsoft making their own version of Remnant or experimenting even more with a game utilizing better free movement.

I love rogue likes and roguelites but I am extremely worried about this game. I feel as if after the first 5 runs everything will get stale and you won’t get the same feeling as the first couple runs. This game NEEDS replayability and I don’t think it will have that
