This year’s awards were easily the best ever. You can tell Geoff took a lot of feedback into account this year and really wanted to make the best show possible. The runtime may have been the same as in previous years, but it sure didn’t feel like it because of how much better the pacing was and how high in quality the announcements were. Geoff really set a new bar this year.

The main problem is the middle section just dragging forever. The beginnings are usually good and the endings are usually award heavy so theres nothing wrong with it, but my god the middle just drags. My biggest problem is there being so many trailers followed by 1 award, and then more trailers. Just show fewer titles, get the awards out faster, it drags less and entertains more. Im sure that might impact how much they make, but a shorter show would also be less expensive so Im sure theres a better middle ground.

I get what ur saying about the who "Geoff won't acknowledge the reasons for the lay-offs thing" but like you have to remember that this show is directly funded by the same people he would be calling out. Obviously in an ideal scenario he would address these things that way because screw big corporations and executives and all that. But I think it's a little unreasonable to expect that of him when it could put the show's future on the line. It shouldn't be like that but it is and I don't think it's something that's gonna change unfortunately.

If calling out the big wigs is way too risky, fine, but lip service without taking someone accountable helps no one, and unfortunately that's all we've gotten. @melephs_cap18 сағат бұрын
It's debatably better than nothing, but it's also not a good thing to let TGA act as soft propaganda for the perpetrators of the worst problems in this industry. There's ways to raise awareness and call people to action and offer support without alienating big companies, especially when he's advertising their products. And if the show does lose a bit of support and money? No problem! It could cut down on the celebrity cameos to save money and give more space to lesser-known studios & industry figures if and when a big studio pulls away. (And would they even withdraw support for a small segment, especially if it were a guest speaker? Unclear! But Geoff doesn't care to try.) I for one hope this year is the first step in a more effective shift. He says "we" struggle, as an awards show, to address industry problems well. I hope he learns how. (Edit: to be clear I don't think Geoff is a bad person! I think he cares and he's walking a fine line! But I do think he is too worried about upsetting big companies and not worried enough about helping struggling devs, and his show absolutely has the platform to make a difference.)

Must say that the criticsm for creating new IPs is a bit weird. "What about the old series then?" have never ever really crossed my mind. Surely we don't want to milk every IP to death. @spongebobfan7815 сағат бұрын
It's because of the Sony statement that, after Concord closed down, they have "no IPs", which felt like they disowned every franchise they had. Ngl, as someone who’s also very critical of The Game Awards amidst watching it every year, who agrees with you most of the time on topics like these, I think you were maybe a bit too cynical about everything this time. I’m not saying it was perfect or that there aren’t a million things they could do to improve but I think this year was a way bigger step in the right direction than you gave it credit for. Yes, the “we can argue all day” line is very silly in a vacuum, but it wasn’t said in a vacuum. I would love for Geoff himself to be more direct but given that he’s in a position where “People watch the show for announcements, and to get announcements, I the face of the show have to maintain a good relationship with the brands,” I think he made the conscious choice to let to platform others to more directly voice that for him. He let Stalter and Waldorf chew into him and last year’s show’s massive fumbles. He let Sven Vincke tear into the games industry before giving Game of the Year to what they basically said should be the model for them to look to. And you mentioned those moments as if Geoff either didn’t know or he did them completely cynically, and, whilst I’m pretty sure there way no way he didn’t know, even if he didn’t or even if he was completely cynical about it, he still did it. He still gave a voice to them and their message on a monumentally massive platform. And he still gave a special award to Amir Satvat entirely for his efforts to help people in the games industry who’ve faced layoffs, probably best, most meaningful moment in the show yet something you COMPLETELY glossed over. Again, just to be explicitly clear, I’m not trying to say that the show and the handling of these subjects were perfect, I’m not trying to say that I now agree with and/or even take at face value everything Geoff Keighley says. I’m not saying that saying that there’s still not work to do and we don’t need to keep pushing. But I am saying that, clearly to some degree, the pushing from last year worked, so I would argue that to act like that’s not meaningful because the show is still pretty silly and stupid is a massive disservice to the insane level of reach that the show has. That, no matter the motivation, the message still got out there. I promise I get where you’re from, most of the time I’m fully with you in these subjects, but I think there’s a thin line between being wary of a source and being tactlessly cynical.

Seriously, the game changer award was powerful stuff, the muppets were great for tearing into Geoff, Swen tearing into the industry as a whole, even Astro bot winning goty and talking about the importance and value of plaformers (a message to Sony first party studios losing touch with their roots) the show was way more than the amazing reveals and shows a massive step in the right direction. Arlo seems extremely and disillusioned with the entire project of TGA at this point which is fair, but he didn’t give nearly as much credit to Geoff who I think genuinely really tried to make this show better than previous years.

Witcher 4 needs to have a good launch and not have any of the garbage that a lot of recent releases have had, or CDPR will be in the same boat as many other studios who don't understand that nobody wants glitchy, unfinished, microtransaction-ridden, modern ideology-infested games.

Agree, this was genuinely one of the best ones they've done. Not to say it didn't have the baggage it usually does, and some poor pacing, but the back to back top tier announcements for both more popular franchises and more niche franchises were there. Like, what do you mean Elden Ring rogue like coming next year? Back to back with Witcher 4? A new Ninja Gaiden by the Blasphemous devs? Okami? The return of Virtua Fighter and Onimusha? A platformer taking game of the year? A new naughty dog IP? I mean, some of this stuff I'm not personally into, but it's the most current gen non Nintendo games announced in one place. And it was the perfect amount of variety imo. Like, everybody watches for the chance of reveals and it damn delivered this time. And that's why I'm eternally locked into watching, because yeah, it's trash 90 percent of the time but there's a chance that cool stuff happens.

However, I don’t think one game (especially a game that they went back and worked hard to fix) should define a whole company. At the very least, they’re good at making Witcher games, so yea pretty interested when it comes out in 2030.

I was going to say seems way too harsh and kinda flippant. Cyperpunk as a game has been beyond redeemed at this point.

I don't think people saying this understand what he means by not being excited for it. He's apprehensive since the last release was so bad. He's not saying that The Witcher 4 will be bad, just that he's been burned and can't just simply take it at face value

I understand your concerns about Naughty Dog “leaving behind” their existing IPs, but they’ve been working on _Intergalactic_ since 2020, and since then, we’ve gotten _three_ remasters (Uncharted 4, Lost Legacy, TLoUPII) and a remake (TLoUPI). So, if they’ve been able to afford to simultaneously work on those smaller projects, maybe there’s hope for Naughty Dog cooking up more than just _Intergalactic_ 🤷♂️ (I just remembered while finishing this comment that they were _also_ working on that TLoU standalone multiplayer game that they scrapped. They seem to be comfortable multitasking, so maybe there _is_ hope!)

Sven's speech was pretty ding dang great. I hope folks take it to heart. I know a bunch of people won't. There are those who will dismiss what he said and just keep pursuing profit over everything else because that's who's in charge of the industry currently... but... I want him to be proven right. I want game of the year to meet all those standards. And this is coming from someone who just could not care at all about the game awards.
@FawnFiction18 сағат бұрын
My biggest takeaway from the show was how few live service games there were compared to last year. At least, it felt like last year's Game Awards were oversaturated with announcements for AAA live service slop. This year still revealed a lot of AAA stuff, but they were largely singleplayer or, at the very least, co-op experiences. Made the event feel less corporate and money-hungry. Also, the Okami sequel automatically makes this the best Game Awards.

I really don’t like the cinematic approach to announcing a new game, especially when it’s the first thing we see, because I don’t even know what the gameplay is like. I wish they saved the cinematic stuff for later and instead showed off their gameplay (and some story) first.

I'm surprised you didn't mention anything about the Game Changer award. Calling out the layoffs by giving a whole segment to someone fighting it is amazing and truly important to showing that people care.
@lupolinar11 сағат бұрын
You might want to look into Amir Satvat, the small KZbinr who totally not works for Tencent as an executive and is responsible for buying out other gaming studios, which will totally not result in lay offs. What a guy, creating the solution for a problem he is part of..
@chair425 сағат бұрын
@lupolinar he started the job finding project in 2020 when he had a small role at Amazon Games. He did this for years before working at Tencent. Just because he's part of the system doesn't mean he can't spend his free time out of work fighting it. It's not like he's in control of doing layoffs. They also never said he was just a KZbinr. It was very clear he had a real job outside of the stuff he got an award for.

What makes Astro Bot winning game of the year and a lot of the individual awards so excting to me is that it could lead to a TRUE rennosance in 3D platformers, Mario Odyssey was huge but it was Nintendo, who have been consistently making high quality 3D platformers for decades now, it's the norm for them, but for a Sony game to be a high quality 3D platformer? THAT catches attention, it shows that you don't have to be Nintendo to make a hit 3D platformer, plus with games like Concord, they all use the same base formula, of I think 5V5, which is easy to recreate, but with Astro Bot, if you recreate it, you'll have to at the very least make your own levels, which means, at the worst in terms of copying Astro Bot and making big budget 3D platformers, we're gonna get what feels like MORE Astro Bot! Which i am ALL IN FOR!!!

Yeah, well paced event, not gonna lie. The comments and jokes were pretty funny (specially the Muppets) and the announcements were great. Although the same problems as always: giving away awards in the pre-show, speedrunning awards to get to awards, and it could be shorter, since I personally always feel it gets a bit stretched by the end. But yeah, fun event overall

I’m really starting to get upset that people think graphics matter they don’t if a game is fun and the graphics are bad the game is still fun
@thatdanjamesguy.33013 сағат бұрын
I mean, graphics can matter. But the graphics arms race is not sustainable and a good game can compensate for less graphics tech. On a personal level I couldn’t care less about graphics as long as a game looks good artistically (more Super Mario Odyssey, less Pokemon Scarlet/Violet).

The highlight for me was Capcom announcing a new Okami and a new Onimusha. So many old franchises that could use a pick me up. Hopefully, with Capcom doing it, it will become more common.
@Yuti64017 сағат бұрын
The problem with intergalactic for me is that it was set up so well to be a big thing like "we actually have just one more thing" so you'd expect a long awaited thing like the previously shown Okami sequel, but it just ended up being something nobody had any investment in and after concord nobody trusts this kind of big CG cinemantic trailer, it failed at marketing on all fronts (Fun fact: the origjnal version of this comment had me calling it "interstellar" it's THAT forgettable)
@thatdanjamesguy.33013 сағат бұрын

I think a big part of why the Muppets are at the Game Awards are just because Geoff Keighley genuinely likes the Muppets. I mean, he's the host, creator, and producer of the Game Awards, so he likely has some oversight in regards to the booking and what events are done and the big line-ups for the night, so getting Disney to agree to star one of their properties in a fairly prestigious awards ceremony shouldn't be that difficult. Keighley might just want them to be there, because if the Oscars aren't going to use them every time they get together, then that's something he's going to take advantage of. And to be honest, who wouldn't if they had that opportunity?
@22Vnnami16 сағат бұрын
If CD Projekt Red delivers on Witcher 4, they will be fully redeemed, although never forget. They did mess up the release of cyberpunk, but simultaneously it is now one of the best fps rpgs ever made. I put it right there with New Vegas and all of its dlc. It’s good to be reminded that your favorite studios can fuck up and to watch them all closely, not preorder, not buy into hype. Support good things, disavow bad things.

I’m really not an apologist for these sorts of things - but I do think that Kealy is just like us all (without realizing he has some power in negotiations) And when his show makes jokes about the problem- he gets it. I also think that 2023’s wrap it up mistep was exactly that. 2022 had some problems, they over corrrwcted and boom 2024 fixed it. This show will never be perfect but it’s honestly the show we deserve and glad it still exists

This was the best one I can recall and I'm not even basing this on the games that was shown. Completely disregarding every single game that was shown, this was the best one. The muppets part was excellent. The pacing was good. People got to speak. The only awkward guys were the Sony and Wukong guy. Most importantly they added the Game Changer category. The best part. Bringing up the horrible things companies have caused because of their uncontrollable greed to show one person who managed to help thousands of people ON HIS OWN FOR FREE! That guy is a fucking HERO! That made me feel "I'm thankful of The Game Awards". This time it felt like the show was for the people behind who are making the games we all love. I will now look forward to this event every year if this is how it will continue. Also, having never played Astro Bot, it was the only correct game to be awarded GOTY. There is hope in this industry still.
