There's definitely nothing wrong with having preferences at all. Though, I will say that I find it refreshing to have a game that doesn't spoonfeed the story to players. The creator, Miyazaki, said that he made the story so people could discover it on their own and interpret it their own way. This is because of the "choose your own adventure" books he read as a kid where he had to interpret the stories because he couldn't understand English. Something about that really resonated with me
