I thought powerstance was a great idea ruined by absolute dogshit implementation. There are less unique powerstances than there are dual weapon movesets in DS3 which is a bit depressing, then on top of that a lot of the powerstances are not even remotely useful and are often much lower damage than just alternating L1 and R1 with dual weapons (which let you attack faster than mashing R1 in DS2) and were less stamina-efficient on top of it. Fists and daggers were the only particularly useful ones, aside from halberd powerstances being used for cheesy oneshot kills early on in the game's lifespan. I'm glad to see Elden Ring improving on it.

Dark Souls 2 had so many neat little touches like this! Really wish that, even if the team wanted to move away from a lot of DS2’s bigger picture design choices (for better or for worse), they’d at least kept the small inconsequential stuff. Some of the powerstancing animations in dark souls 2 were viable through their simplicity. Weapons were mostly swung simultaneously rather than consecutively, and felt like they left you open for a shorter period of time than you were after whiffing an attack with, say, the drang twin spears. Here’s to hoping they don’t make them too flashy.

Why powerstance is cool btw In DS2 you could use two weapons from the same class (or with a few variation) with a unique moveset tied to this class (ex 2 rapiers). It means that if you had x 1.5 str and dex requirements for the most demanding weapon of the two (ex. one greataxe and one big fat juicy klonk greataxe) you could unlock a whole new moveset. Some weapons even had unique abilities when powerstanced. Having 75 str actually mattered (ex 2 50str greataxes), placing the meta and the casual game in an original position of building your character thoroughly. Planning on going full dex ? DS2 rewarded you for your commitment. Same for the spells ; the narrative and the chara building of DS2 was simply stellar, original and actually flexible. Too bad people only remembered the ADP controversy, which is not awful imo in a casual playthrough if you take the specialization offered seriously. You can really become an escape artist, or a slow unrelenting tank, etc. Powerstance is associated with sharp PvP meta and freedom of gameplay.

People lag so much you hit them, hear your weapon slice into them but the damage doesn't go through. Or you see your spells whizz past them, but still knock them out of a roll. And then they suddenly backstab you from 5 metres away. Fighting people is an absolute slog and a massive waste of time for me.

imo not great one of tne of the advantages of duel wielding in ds2 is that the poise damage of both weapons stacked on one hit. Now duel wielding seems to be no different than using two weapons while not power stanced in ds2.

That's why people lifted their sword up not downward, not only it's easier to swing but also quick to block. You clearly don't know wtf you're talking about.

I know that the weapons are amazing, but, one aspect that I feel like it's severely overlooked in games in general, is the unarmed combat system. Sure we had one in previous soul games (not sure if in all of them), but they consisted mostly on punching attacks, no kicks and certainly no grapples or throws. Maybe I'm asking for too much here, but talking about Elden Ring now, the game is an RPG, so it should give me the option to play as an unarmed warrior and possibly use some grappling techniques (although I don't think the final product will have "grappling", let alone kicks..). But hey, at least we have fists.....that's good enough! To end this "rant", or what might you call this, I'll say that not everyone is thrilled when it comes to long-ranged or short-ranged weapons in games. I can enjoy those as well, but not as much as I love the unarmed combat.

@@chrismanuel9768 It doesn`t at all, look at the uba and oni animations. It has two different animations in it`s attack chain, first attack barely even resembles elden. The arm movements are far more seperate here and the second attack animation for uba + oni is a upward swing and a stab with the other weapon.

not exactly.... i'm no expert but what i do know is that scimitar handle curves at the end and half of the blade (Tip of the blade) gets thicker. Katana generally have a longer and straighter handle, and their blade going to the tip can stay at very similiar length or slightly thinner however i can see how they look similar to scimitars

​@@MadeInHell_92 two sheaths on the same side? well I guess it's because lots of other games does it and anime also has that kind of aspect like Zoro from One Piece, but people also do that in irl because it's two katanas of different length and used for diffierent purposes, however it's always been this way in games because it's common for people to wield their katana on the left side of their waist also in the souls series if you have two katana they're on the left side of the waist not on both right? can't remember lol or like the Onikiri and Ubadachi in DS3 plus wouldn't it be hard to pull out two full length katanas from both side of your waist at the same time? :p
