Great video Simon! For my wooden bellows, I purchased very cheaply, a 3 foot length of Surgical Grade plastic tubing. It's available in different diameters, so it was easy to find the right size for my bellows. I simply tightly pushed one end of the tubing on to the end of my bellows. I can now have my face up to 3 feet away from my fire!

For those who hate the idea of losing stuff while hiking/camping , there's a really useful glow in the dark paracord. If you attach 10cm to your items it'll help ! It's not amazingly long lasting but if you're looking for the item its attached to after dark, with a high power torch, it'll retain a little light after you wave the torch past it.

Useful for hand drill fires as well...we have shorter shrubs here in the mountains...the flowers are steeped for tea to reduce fever, the berries are rather tart but can be used in jams...or wine...other parts of the plant have alkaloids that can be harmful if ingested in quantity, though i know there are different varieties of elder...so not sure these toxic properties exist in your neck of the woods. I personally like elder berries even though they can be quite tart and they are brilliant for friction fire...i like your Bellows...Maggie looks to be having a grand ol time!..atb...woods
@simonablokeinthewoods7 жыл бұрын
Cheers Woods! Our Elder is also mildly toxic, the leaves, flowers and seeds especially, but once cooked are fine - not that you’d want to eat the leaves!! I too like the berries, in small doses and I’ve made really nice jam with them before. I’m going to do a video on them as food later in the year. I'll bet a crochet hook would work great. I grew French Endives in my garden one year, and they keep coming up. This year when I pulled them out, I noticed the stalk is hollow! I suppose bamboo's another alternative, which doesn't need hollowing, though you've gotta be careful with splinters of course. Not so freely available in the wild as elder, I guess, though I have a massive clump of it in my garden.

Hi Simon, Elder is poisonous (cyanide-producing glycoside in the leaves, twigs, and seeds) so it's probably a good idea that you remove the bark. Using it as a bellows shouldn't be a problem but I wouldn't use it as a straw. Regards, Phil
@simonablokeinthewoods7 жыл бұрын
Cheers Phil, good point about using it as a straw - elder is only mildly poisonous, and probably, a good oiling would seal it enough. I’m planning on doing a video on the edibility later in the year when I’ll talk more about toxicity. Atb, Simon.

@munchkin56746 жыл бұрын
We have one made from a 3 foot piece of 1/2" copper pipe. One end has a cap soldered on with a hole in the center. The other end is flared out a bit for the mouth piece. That extra length makes it easier. We also have 2-3 made our of brass tubing that telescopes to a longer length and made to a storage length that fits in a pack, etc. This idea isn't new. Elder, particularly the Mexican Elder, is really considered just a big weed. They have a spongy, pithy core. When the wood from these trees become rotten and punky, that make excellent fire tinder that can be charred like cloth.
@simonablokeinthewoods6 жыл бұрын
Cheers, here to, elder grows rapidly and adorns every hedgerow like a weed, but a useful plant for the flowers, berries and of course the wood which lends itself to all sorts of useful applications. I’ve seen the extending bellows that work like a radio antenna. Your copper bellies sounds great for use at a static camp or on the bbq - might have to have a go at one - thanks! Atb, Simon

Only just got round to this one. Were you aware that at this end of the county, folk lore says you should never burn Elder.

Cheers Jeremy - I haven’t heard that saying - I’ll have to make sure I don’t accidentally chuck it on the fire! 🔥😁

Why not a longer *bellows? Why only 5 or 6 inches? Wouldn't a foot long be safer and more comfortable to use? I only ask for information. Corrected the mis-spelling.

Purely for packability. Although it works really well, even at a distance for safety. 👍🔥

Elder flower champagne nearly killed my Father, it was fermenting in the bottles, sadly not knowing why you use corks my parents used screw tops. One exploded and the neck of the bottle buried itself in the wall 6 inches from his head!
