i feel like cases like this really showcase how truly damaging bad parenting can be. it's a shame that there aren't more systems in place ensuring children are safe. these types of cases also make it very clear that governments should have better and more accessible mental health systems. who knows what might've happened if tracy had gotten help as a young adult.

A lot of killers emerge because their parents/guardians severely failed them, either in the form of abuse, negligence, or condoning them. Obviously this in no way excuses what they did, but sometimes you really have to think twice before becoming a parent. Not just for yourself, but for the sake of the child's upbringing

I truly hope that everyone knows that one should not necessarily believe the accusations against her grandfather. The hypnosis techniques for repressed memories during that time have turned out to be wildly ineffective and in nearly all cases a false memory was accidentally planted instead. This type of therapy has been both abandoned and discredited because countless innocent people were accused of things like that and because even though the memory was false the patient who endured this "treatment" still had to live with the trauma as if it were real. That really should be noted and explained here. If anyone wants info on this, let me know. It's something I studied a lot during my time going to school for psychology. I'd be happy to help people find some good info or whatever.

Thank you! The landscape of the Satanic Panic integrated greatly in psychology leaving innocent people to be burdened by the blame. The mixture of leading questions and being in a suggestive state (or a suggestible person) is not in the least reliable. People have been traumatised because they’ve been led to believe that horrific things have happened to them and now they have the trauma that wasn’t there before. I would be extremely skeptical. She has a past with grooming and sexual abuse so it’s possible for her to have transferred memories of real events to new “memories” that never occurred. It’s difficult to say “no, that didn’t happen”, but memories get worse over time and become much less reliable. Regardless if you fully believe something happened in a memory, the mind easily mixes details, combines events, dates/times, even dreams. And this is without being put in a position to where you are made to recall “hidden memories”, under stress, asked certain (potentially leading) questions, etc.

Later on the police found explicit images of me on his computer so I knew I wasn't just crazy. I don't really care to force memories to return (I don't really recall anything before the age of eight) because I don't really want to know all the details. @@Sbunisbos It's somewhat like that. I guess after the first time I had a flashback my brain "let its guard down" because I recalled some details about my life I hadn't before (from some details about the abuser to a memory of me playing with a toy vacuum as a kid). The first time it had to be triggered out (a sexual situation caused the initial flashback) and since then I've just gained some memories organically. I wouldn't do hypnosis though, just because it feels like forcefully undoing something my brain has obviously done for my benefit

im very conflicted about this case. while yes, what tracy did was terrible, i still felt heartbroken when i heard that her grandfather was sexually abusing her for years and she would block out the memories of that. Medical professionals who follow people with DID like me know that. Also, alters, especially persecutor, can change with time, and stop hurting people or the rest of the system. Perhaps, but the stolen, shortened comment has gotten more traction than my own. So, maybe I’m just a bit of a sore loser. But, @z, if you happen to not be a bot, please cease this silly thieving and come up with your own thoughts. If you are a bot, I hope your creator loses the ability to create things such as you ASAP. The simple black and white top, the subtle makeup, and (as a goofy southern American woman) your accent is always lovely to hear. I hope that the families who are affected by the cases that you cover find solace in how you present their “stories” as you always do your best to highlight the best of those who were lost and/or taken. I’ve no doubt my comment will be lost in a sea of other which are ever so much the same as mine, but I felt compelled to say something today. You’re a gem. This is a really interesting case and great information about DID. One thing to remember about this case is the time period in which it took place. DID was a very new diagnosis at the time, and there was A LOT of misinformation as people studied it. I remember a bunch of celebrities saying they had 100s of personalities and a bunch of "reclaimed memories." Some of those memories were later debunked. It was just a time where psychology was trying to make sense of what people were experiencing. So, I take her memories retrieved through hypnosis with a grain of salt because of the methods used at the time. I've no doubt she experienced trauma and probably had DID, but I think the historical context is also important.

@@amandacowen9100 You’re right, faking is a problem that really sucks for the community. I will say though that DID isn’t as rare as people think it is. It’s about 1-3% of people. That like the percent of people with naturally red hair. Its just as common as bulimia. It’s a spectrum like all disorders are too, and some people don’t think about that and think it’s either extreme. None or several super differentiated alters with full black outs between. Though some people fake it, most of the time it’s probably real considering it’s not too uncommon. Even if it’s not, then it’s likely that the person is just confused and trying to figure it out. I’ve done a lot of reading and research, and my opinion on self diagnosis, which you can take or leave, is that most of the time it’s okay. Diagnosis can be thousands of dollars and insurance won’t cover it. Especially if you have DID, it more likely that you aren’t going to be in a situation where you can get one. I have informal diagnosis of therapists saying that I definitely have DID, but I do not want to get professionally diagnosed because of the stigma behind the disorder and what limits that could put on my life. I think for the 1% of people who say things like “I keep my room clean omg I am so OCD”, there are 99 people who are doing their research and just want to figure things out but don’t have the resources to pay that much to go get it in official writing.

@@Lasagna498 Very well said 👏. There is another factor that plays into all that as well. Many psychiatrists and psychologists don't believe it exists at all. I've had dissociative episodes all my life from a torturous childhood. (My first episode I've regained access to was at 3 years old) One doctor suspected it when I was 7 or 8, and begged my adopted mom to let her treat me. She refused because she was physically abusive and worried it, among other things, would come out. After that, I told another 8 psychiatrists/psychologists, and only one even acknowledged that it was an issue. A few told me it was normal. One told me that I didn't meet the criteria for a diagnosis because of how short some of the "black outs" were. He believed I was attention seeking. I was in my mid 30's before I finally got acknowledgement that I have some form of dissociative disorder. He warned against me getting an official diagnosis, and told me the only treatment is integration. Keep up with therapy, etc. It makes me wonder how many people have it, but don't know because their doctor doesn't believe in it. Or end up misdiagnosing it as schizophrenia or something like that.

Hello! A DID system here! You explained it very well! Thank you so much for not painting DID in a bad light. It means the world, to not just us, but to others in the DID community as well. We are, however, going to explain some little misconceptions! DID is a trauma based, formed by repeated childhood trauma before the ages of 7-9. This trauma can be any type of abuse, neglect, and even medical trauma. DID forms as a survival mechanism for children in awful situations. This happens through structural dissociation: This is the theory that a child is born with unintegrated parts. So think of it like little bubbles in your mind that are assigned to your daily survival. One bubble makes sure you eat, one makes sure you drink enough, and so on. When you get to a certain age, these bubbles are supposed to come together to make one big bubble, know as you. Or your integrated personality. However, repeated and severe trauma can cause these bubbles to conflict, which stops them from coming together, and puts up walls(the amnesiac barriers)between them. So now, instead of one bubble, there are multiple. And these “bubbles” are known as Alternate states of consciousness, or alters. Over time, yes, more alters can be developed, however, you cannot lose alters. Alters can go dormant, which means they are inactive or “in a deep sleep” as some describe it. And alters can fuse, which means two or more alters come together to make one alter(two bubbles come together to make one) this is also know as integration, but the terms “Integration” and “Fusion” are often mixed up. DID is also not uncommon. 1-3% of the population has DID, so for every person you see with Red hair, someone out there has DID. It’s honestly heartbreaking. DID is not quirky, it’s not fun, and it’s not a joke. What this system did is inexcusable, and horrible. However, to those who are influenced by movies like “Split” that put DID in a bad light, please remember that we are NOT serial killers. We are not murderers. We are deeply traumatized children who were and still are seeking survival. - Cainen (System host)

fun fact: Back when I discovered true crime and more importantly Eleanor, I was super busy preparing my move across country, working full time and also finishing my bachelor thesis. So to not get distracted so much, I told KZbin to never suggest me any of Eleanors videos anymore. Not much later I subscribed but KZbin never shows me new uploads of hers due to my initial wish. So now I like to most of the times be happily rewarded when manually checking her channel because I am in the mood for true crime :) I know the bell exists. But I have more joy this way as I never know when I'll find a new video when I am in the mood for it.

It makes me so sad to hear when older kids, especially adopted or foster kids, are treated so badly in their homes and used as substitute parents or scapegoats. I was in that situation so I can sympathize with that. I was lucky enough to have an amazing dad who always took care of me when he was home, but it was always hard. It breaks my heart to know this girl wasn't able to turn to anyone. It's good to hear that she was able to get out of that situation. I know that's not the focus of this video, but it just stuck with me.

I think it would be really interesting to see a video about Jeni Haynes from you. She's incredibly brave and I'm pretty sure she made a legal "first" with her and her alters' testimonies at her father's trial. The brain is so strange. From a physical aspect, there are traumatic brain injuries that completely alter personalities (me, for example-I have zero shame or self-consciousness post TBI). From a psychological aspect, there's the way a brain can divide itself and create personalities that can develop the skills they need to keep safe.

DissociaDID sounds great on a surface level but is actually incredibly problematic in the DID community. I liked them for a lot time too, because the videos are high quality videos, but as the content goes along there's issues of racism that pop up, issues where there's dramatization for the audience or certain alters are fabricated (with proof) from other DID forums, high evidence of the platform being used to bully smaller platforms and voices, and, WORST OF ALL, Nin supports someone who was caught having issues with pedophilic urges and defending drawing incredibly disturbing depictions of CP - especially ones that involved real people aged down to being children.
