Because of this all the shotgun pellets aren’t as grouped up when they exit the barrel- they spread out and cause widespread damage to things up close. You’re more likely to hit close targets, but doesn’t work well for shooting things further away. No one has a sawed off shotgun for legitimate reasons, that’s what pistols are for. People just saw off shotguns because shotguns are easier to buy than pistol permits, and the sawed off barrel makes them easier to conceal. It’s illegal to saw off shotguns in the US because of this.
