While our main story on political threats to Brazil's Amazon rainforest can currently be found on Netflix and on KZbin later today, we’re first focusing on the Philippines as the country’s citizens prepare to vote in their midterm election.
With several of President Rodrigo Duterte's favorite senate candidates leading in national polls, Hasan weighs the costs of a brutal drug war that has killed thousands of civilians without trial -- and points to brave Filipinos who are risking their safety and freedom to push back against the powerful president.

Welcome to the Philippines, where politicians focus on their interests instead of the people that they are serving, where Politicians quarrel make issues about each other, instead of unifying the government. Where people vote because the candidate gives money, or is very popular. Where candidates defame other candidates for the sake of winning. How can you unify your country when the government itself isn't united? I don't get why people who have been thrown into jail and proven guilty still gets a seat in the senate? I don't get why being so popular can bring you to power instead of looking at other people who are sincere to help the nation. I don't get why the same old faces and same old people get elected over and over again? Aren't we tired that our nation is still the same like it used to? Aren't we tired that we elect the people just based of their number of terms served in the government, but didn't even do anything to help the country? The same old issues are still the same. Since in time immemorial. When the USA gave us independence on the 4th of July, our country has been unstable. We people must be unified, we should not be divided because of just disagreement regarding political opinions. We should think about ourselves, and for the future of the Republic of the Philippines, we should bring ourselves closer together, we should be patriotic, singing the national anthem or raising our flag isn't enough to describe and praise ourselves that we are proud to be Filipinos, and we are proud of our motherland. We must unite under one voice and one goal, we must not let other Filipinos go down. We must unite to give the politicians a wake-up call that we are Filipinos, without us you are nothing. Without us, there is no Philippines.

I'm Filipino and I live in the Philippines. Applying for a job in Mcdonald's here requires certain clearance such as a criminal record, meanwhile running for a president post only requires you to be a citizen. F*CKING RIDICULOUS, RIGHT?! Officials and Politicians in other countries step down from their positions when they had been allegedly involved in a controversy, in my country? After being convicted and spending time in jail, they run to even higher positions in the government. So to wrap it up, it's the people here who are the problem, not the elites. But are we? Besides, the Philippines has always been a ground for psychological warfare which the U.S government had been using against us ever since they set foot here.

This is true, but in my case, I still could say that Duterte still affected my community in a good way. Since he became the president, besides the free education, kids in my area stopped using drugs and men stopped drinking outside their premises and I feel safer when I get off to work at night. And yes, there are bad things and good things that happened but I am satisfied with what he has done. (except the so-called collateral damages) ...so what's your opinion about BBM?

some of the things you said are true. as much as it pains me to admit, elections in the Philippines is usually just popularity contest. No good or bad publicity, that's why alot of celebrities joins politics, they already have a fan base for support. in small towns people will vote for you if you buy them drinks etc while campaigning. Isn't that the point of "democracy"? a popularity contest of politicians who could appeal with the best national policies for another administration? I doubt celebrities are now making impact as drastic today compared 20 years ago, you got a famous movie actor at that time (Ferdinand Poe Jr.) or Noli de Castro during the 2000s, but nowadays, candidates are mainly with academic and administrative backgrounds such as Lacson, Moreno (even though he used to be an actor, he studied political science before joining politics, just like Ronald Raegan of the U.S.), BBM, and Robredo Even though Pacquiao is knows as a boxer mainly, he's not quite popular in national politics because of his political blunders during early-2010s The paradigm of the Philippine politics is now this, one who have great academic and administrative background, one who has good economic and social policies, and diplomacies. Presidents following Estrada are now composed of people with notable academic and political backgrounds, such as an economist (Macapagal Arroyo), former governor (PNOY Aquino), and a former mayor (Rodrigo Duterte)

The fuq!? We have a bunch of dums-dums and nationalists in power. Well to be fair, we Filipinos never really internalized democratic values anyway. An example is the prevalence of private schools with an emphasis on religious values. Sure, they might be more efficient than say, the public school system, but the private schools are no better. They might be different in the sense that they're privately owned but fundamentally they operate in the same way. I mean come on, schooling itself is already considered outdated in the minds of some intellectuals, but in here there's literally no opposition or critique to an inherently flawed system. I mean there is, but there's a lot of pushback if you say things like, "schooling is outdated" or "it's authoritarian BS" or "it's not giving us anything useful in our lives." But let's not kid ourselves here. We all adopted the current form of schooling from one of the worst aspects of the culture of one of Europe's most authoritarian states during the 18th Century, which was Prussia. Their system, which all of us still use today, is not meant for us to be seekers, but rather docile buffoons who are obedient to those at the top, free choice be damned. So while the rest of the world calls for reform, we are doing nothing of the sort. So much for Filipino democracy...

They like him because he represents the people's bad desire and turn it into something normal. Like: Is it normal to kill people? Supporters would say: Yes. They do drugs and they rape and kill other people. They find this solution to be the best one not knowing they are doing the same. But even though I hate this whole drug war, I cannot take for granted his action to free up colleges and universities. And trying to have the Universal Health Care. Fine! That's something to applaud. But the same as Marcos, I think that doesn't cover up other things he had done. 1. A lot of the victims on war on drugs are either caught up in the cross-fire or actually innocent. That's something no one here should deny. 2. His buddy-buddy relationship with Xi even when Philippines and China are fighting over some islands. 3. The increasing debt of the Philippines which I might say is like paralleling with Marcos then. I wonder if he knows who will pay for it. And he even borrowed a large sum from China who gives higher interests than other countries. 4. The corrupt officials he just let go from prison. That says a lot, right. 5. And take note, it is June 22, 2020. We are in the midst of the pandemic. And we have the longest lockdown in the world. Yet we have no plans. He simply say, "Try to survive until 2021". I mean, seriously?

People go batshit crazy when condemning the drug war, but where was this energy when the drug problem was out of control? Man I tell you, I've witnessed the drug problem and its effects on society first hand. At the height of the drug problem, drugs were so rampant and no one dared to challenge drug traffickers since they were untouchable. The drug problem perpetrated every level & demography of society: Poor, working class, upper-class, mothers, brothers, sisters, sons, daughters, students, police, nurses, doctors, businessmen, etc. Some even exaggerate that if Duterte didn't become President, their dogs and cats would be influenced with meth. All throughout the years, traditional politicians and the church turned a blind on the drug problem while the rest of society are left to fend for themselves against drug lords & traffickers. DUTERTE is the symbol that the Filipino people HAVE HAD ENOUGH. And ever since Pres. Duterte took office, we have seen radical change in our neighborhoods, once emboldened drug traffickers were now in hiding or have gone rehabilitation to avert dire consequences. And I've also noticed that most anti-drug war activists are sheltered privileged individuals who live in posh neighbourhoods and being driven around by personal vehicles. Their testimony hold no weight to me. People are quick to point out the statistics about the damages of this drug war, but can anyone point out the damages done by the drug problem? Pres. Duterte's drug war wasn't perfect, but he did provide a necessary shock to the system.

In the Philippines, the "drug suspects" being killed are exactly that: suspects. Who under the Constitution are to be presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. And Duterte and his police lump them all together and see no difference between: drug lords, miserable street corner dealers selling a hit in order to eat, mere users, and FORMER users, including those who had successfully completed drug rehab programs and were already leading responsible lives. All are ripe for summary execution by the police, who just want to impress the higher-ups by picking human targets from a sinister little list compiled with local officials, then shooting them dead in raids, even if the guys are unarmed and begging for their lives as they are being shot right in front of their children, spouses, neighbors, relatives.

Duterte made his stance long before the closure that ABS-CBN will be closed, later retracting his statements.

This war is brutal, and obviously Hasan points out it’s not as effective as it seems. I kinda remembered this being in a news here in the Philippines. It is said there that the people in Malacañang didn’t like this segment for it will be election soon then. But then, whatever... Politics in the Philippines has always been attached to killings and corruption. I can’t even count how many died near our place because one just wants to win the seat. It is indeed position is equal to power. I think that one of the biggest problem in the country is political dynasty. Because families kept on trying to get a hold of the positions their father/mother got into, they want to do everything they could to remain seated even it cost blood. Because of poverty, a lot Filipinos are being tempted to sell their votes to the highest bidder. And because of the low quality of education and spread of facts, rampant misinformation came to other people. Many came yo believe that it is their salvation and whatever the social media or a celebrity idol tells them is rather the truth. Just take the case of Bong Revilla. He is a senator who already been jailed for corruption but denied this case and ran again in the senate with no particular platform and simply just danced Budots and he won. I was like looking at the news and saw that he really has a lot supporters just being a former TV icon and won even him being a criminal. That was the time I wanna shout at people of the Philippines if they are dumb. But then, I realized that I might not be too understanding how other people get their information. In reality, I really want to say so many things about this particular election. From all the cheating and all the candidates ran for an office. But ai think that my comment might need a lot space just to say everything. I think what can summarize my feelings about this government is “it sucks”. Seriously, it does.

Well, I’m a Filipino so I guess I can give my perspective on the matter based on my experience, and the few things I learned from school. We Filipinos never had a chance to experience great leaders, and if we did, we demand more from them (it’s like we were never satisfied, like ever). As what Mr Minhaj said, we have close family ties, and reflects on our political system, we’d rather hire(support) someone we know, than someone who has the merit (cronies over merits), that is why if you’re going to hop from one place to another, you’ll see family members occupying almost all of the positions. That is why many political analysts discusses the idea that the power of democracy and the culture of Filipinos are like two positive charged magnets that will never click - we just don’t know what to do with it. Probably that is why we choose “lesser evil” cause we never realised that there are other, better, choices for us...

I voted Duterte in 2016 only because he was the only one open to charter change. The 1987 constitution is broken and its restrictiveness to foreign investment is really hurting Filipinos for decades (no jobs here, need to work abroad just to make upwards mobility happen). He has campaigned about this way before he was rumored to be aiming for the presidency. When he finally submitted his candidacy, his platform suddenly focused mostly on crime and war against drugs. I understood this because it was easier to gain supporters this way than to nitpick about the constitution to a flock of people who were already lead to believe by the status quo that any politician that's pro-chacha has only evil dictatorial motives. His drug war has highly unrealistic goals in the first place. It only tarnished his name and gained him many enemies and critics. I was disappointed that our must-needed constititional reform has taken a back seat to something that was only a band-aid solution to a festering problem.
