Netflix Is A Joke

Күн бұрын

On the latest Patriot Act, Hasan breaks down of the growing threats to Brazil's Amazon rainforest. After a long and welcome decline, Brazil's deforestation rates have begun to rise again, just as climate science shows how desperately we need the forest to survive.
Now, backed by the country's powerful beef industry, the country's inflammatory new president Jair Bolsonaro has vowed to exploit Brazil's natural resources. Standing in his way: the determined indigenous peoples whose domain over the land are the last, best shot for the rainforest -- and possibly the world's climate.

In most of his shows he speaks about “what we can do” and this is one had a very obvious call to action (besides donating money) which is to eat less meat(beef) but except for a few cow jokes here and there, the whole topic was overshadowed by corruption. The industry exists and continues to exploit because there is an ever-growing demand for beef. You can LITERALLY start with-eat less animals. It’s that simple. Or at least boycott this particular company’s meet, but people are so scared of telling people that their food habits may be destroying the world.

I think the better way is to get the population down. Like we just don't have a choice anymore. Anything we do just harms nature. The products we use come wraped up in plastic, The food we eat comes in plastic,The clothes we wear. We poison the air around us by just existing. The existence part of the equation needs to be removed. So I really just thank covid-19 for coming to nature's aid. Enough is enough

I know on the surface what I say is shocking but if u looked at the world from outside u wouldn't have a doubt about the destruction that we have caused. I see the world burning and I burn alongside. Genocide is a small price to pay for what humanity continues to do to ourselves. Forget what we do to nature and other species If u just knew the possibilities of a human life and how people choose to waste it. U himself would be itching to use the nuclear options. U just haven't seen what people have done with everything that is given to them . Beyond there compulsion they refuse to see the consciousness of their actions. It's beyond infuriating. So ya if I had the switch I wouldn't think twice about using it. The world needs a firm reset. And it will happen whether u or I want it or not.

Stephen Jenkins In the whole clip she clarified that Climate change is at fault. She constantly talks about drought, heatstrokes and hurricanes causing climate change related death Also a poll came out that showed that AOC is actually moderate on issues when compared to voters. She’s only seen as “extreme” bc the Dem party has shifted to the right of their voters. You saying ppl dying isn’t a “massive cause for concern” is pretty privileged. It doesn’t concern you bc you and ppl you know aren’t dying

Stephen Jenkins You idiot, ppl are gonna have a harder time feeding them self bc of climate change. Climate change has affected the poorer countries and ppl first bc they can’t afford to relocate. Hurricanes form stronger in warmer waters and more evaporation means more storms. Here is a scholarly article describing this: pdfs.semanticscholar.org/0a92/a8196fa0951fb43441094ab9b172051d10dc.pdf There’s nothing wrong with being a populist. She’s doing what the ppl want and doing it from a humane perspective. The majority of Americans want medicare for all so she’s pushing it. Hey Hasan, please talk more about indigenous rights around the world to spread awareness as people know little about how protecting indigenous land is equal to protecting forests. Also, how replanting is not an option, as we can't afford losing old trees at such a critical time of global warming, which holds water table.

Great show! I'm so glad this is back!! Just a thing though: Lula's trial was super shady. Fastest trial in brazilian history, mainly so he couldn't run for president (cause he was projected to win). What they have on him is circumstancial at best, and even if proved to be true, isn't enough to prove corruption, only that he had an undeclared apartment. He went true some pretty bad stuff during the trial period, being denied basic rights. His situation is closer to political arrest (illegal in Brazil) than fair trial.

If you think we chopped down all our trees, you must never have visited the east coast... There has been massive reforestation here on a scale not seen before in human history. It's an amazing testament to nature's ability to heal itself. As long as the land isn't developed with concrete, the trees will be able to come back if people stop clearing and farming it

Wish you'd talked about people cutting down on meat and dairy consumption. Its the demand that is making these people raise cows for beef. Not to forget the amount of methane released by cows that is way more potent than CO2!

Ecuador tried it. Tried to raise money to keep oil in the ground - underneath one of the richest forests in the world. Countries simply didn’t put enough money up. (Last I checked). From what I know of the workings of UNFCCC related commitments on climate change as well as parallel funding opportunities like REDD+, countries will do everything to not give additional money (of which a lot is needed) and OECD ones will call meeting after meeting on how to creatively account for financial commitments made AND continue polluting. The only way to do this is BOTH raise money that countries need to protect forests, adapt to climate change, etc. but also drastically cut down our consumption. Not depend on consumerism fueled economic growth. We did it once before - created a proper international agreement to protect the ozone hole from getting bigger (and except for a recent spike in HFCs, that remains one of the best climate related treaties ever drawn and enforced). Annex 1 countries like the US coughed up the money for Annex 2 countries to not go down the same path Annex 1 countries had - common but differentiated responsibility. Annex 2 countries were also given access to technology. They also put in exceptional monitoring mechanisms in place - to track CFCs and HFCs. What helped Ozone treaty was also the fact that companies in Annex 1 countries came up with a technological alternative they wanted to sell - the treaty opened up markets for them in Annex 2. GHG emissions are a bit more complex, in many ways. For instance, we can’t actually measure how much CO2 is emitted by each country - we know what’s in the atmosphere, but country emissions are complex calculations. Organizations and fossil fuel rich nations are not positioned enough to capture the benefits of say a transition to a renewable energy based economy. The money needed for mitigation and adaptation is huge...well beyond what was raised for Ozone protocol. But then, the costs of not acting - as humans have since 1980s - is significantly large as well. Hassan is right in that we are fucked.

@@MrBharath91 well today the world order is changing. We don't like to listen to our politicians, we like to listen to our comedians. Why not provide a hint of a solution as well? While I thoroughly enjoyed the episode, I would like Hasan to encourage Americans to consume less beef and only procure from local butchers. Seems like a logical end to the episode!!

Brazil 1.1 by a brazilian: (and a lot of other brazilians will disagree here) The latter governments were poorly trying to enforce the laws that protected the ecosystem. The corruption scandals, impeachment and prision of two of the former leaders had a big influence by one of the most powerful groups in the brazilian political scheme, The agricultural and cattle companies lobbysts. The new president has been elected with major support of these companies and is enforcing the removal of laws and policies to protect the ecosystem, what will generate more profit for those companies. We are now pretty much selling the amazon and in the process killing native tribes that lives there.... oh, and it's highly possible to have some involvement under the sheets of american gvnmt in the process to remove our two former leaders previously mentioned.... but it's still uncertain yet.

Thank you for bringing attention to Brazil, the indigenous people, and the importance of preserving the Amazon rainforest. I would like to note that the ocean should probably be considered the Earth's lungs, even though most people probably think it's forests that provide our planet's oxygen. But both, of course, are extremely valuable and needs our protection. In any case, I hope Patriot Act can one day also bring some increased attention to the huge problems the ocean is facing (eg. overfishing/unsustainable fisheries practices, ocean acidification, harmful algal blooms).

Aside from the corruption and governmental inefficiency in Brazil, it is important to know that many countries who have pledged to help protect the Amazon, actually have some of their companies involved in the deforestation. Many European companies have been caught cutting and transporting huge logs of high quality rare tree species. The problem is very complex. Even indigenous tribes have been found to have been bribed to allow the mentioned companies to explore their lands.
