Interesting video thank you for showing the install. A surprising choice by the customer particularly in view of the property (from what I can see) - I would guess that house has a heat loss of around 9 KW at - 2C, his bills are going to be eye watering unless he heats his house to around 10C.😉 There’s a place for electric boilers and high heat loss properties are not the place for them - well unless you are minted of course.

@@MJTiffPlumbing Well, of course any contribution by solar generation on an annualised basis will reduce the annual electrical bill a bit but unless he owns a huge barn, not shown in the video, that he can deploy about forty panels on - it is not going to touch the sides in terms of meeting the heating demand.

I can really see the benefits of press fit its clean and time saving, and yes you have to think ahead,but that comes with experience of using it . I would really like to have a go with it . One good thing I can see straight away is that you can make half a tee without having to press the whole lot ,thats something you cannot do with soldering. Electric boilers have come on leaps and bounds since the last time i fitted one which was over 12 years ago. Also it incorporates the cirulator and bypass as well. It's good that you had basically a clean canvas to mount everything out of the way. And another thing is that pre-plumbed cylinder worked a treat, never fitted one,i always fit the standard type unvented . Yet again another quality install, and a real insight into what we go through to provide customers with heat and hot water. Yours is the only channel i watch which is not full of click bait and stupity. Fantastic video as always.

Hi Mark, getting to grips with the press fit, I think the job looks great with the pressed fittings, in that setting. As far as thinking ahead about what to press in what order, an element of that goes into it when soldering fittings too. You just get used to it and it becomes natural after a while, as we say, press, push and solder all have a place depending on the situation. I’m looking forward to the film on the cost of press fit fittings etc, have a great week and take care, regards, Chris. 👍👍👍

Im not a plumber but heavily reserched press for a commercial project i was planning. Id suggest clipping before pressing. When you did the first press the pipe was flapping all over the place. Another recommendation is to use McDonald water storage for cylinders. Might not be cheap but they are all made to order and can be whatever you want with fittings wherever you want them. If likd this job youve got fixed pipes to hook on to you tell them where they are and theyll put the fittings on the cylinder where you need them.

Would have been miles better putting an up to date low kw oil boiler back in if the infrastructure was already there. Statistically miles cheaper than electric with or without solar pv (which doesnt give you much contribution in the winter months) oil is great if set up properly and not slung in, add in some pipe stats on the return so it doesn’t produce unnecessary heat and they can be so efficient, bizarre to change to electric in the current climate with costs of eleccy.

Sounds like that would be 3 phase as they run more than 14.4KW & need 3 phase to achieve it & are used when a bath is supplied by it or when higher flow is needed for hot water. Also possibly when more radiators are needed & more than 14.4KW is needed which draws 63 amps at 230V.

Rented a house with an electric boiler......very expensive to run and it didnt modulate......it's just full on or off. A properly specced air source heat pump is the way to go if you want electric heating, on milder days they can cost 5 times less than an standard electric boiler. Only problem is they are mega expensive at the moment and lots of negative press due to cowboy installations.

Nice neat pipework, but why not just fit a direct cylinder with two immersions? Cheaper, and similar recovery time plus less complexity for the pipework and heating controls, and it means you always get full power for the heating even if the hot tank is calling for heat.

Thanks mate….. customer wanted this set up as it’s doing a full heating system aswell so made sense
@triax7006

The electric will heat the water faster & feed the cylinder & it's pressurised meaning you gain efficiency as the higher the pressure the more heat per KW of electricity (higher pressure = higher temperature). Also no problems with the immersion heater elements going - albeit it means the coil in the electric boiler doing more work & could fail faster. Also as the heating side of the boiler would not be used in the summer it means it would be wasted, whereas as as it is it will be supplying hot water even in summer.

If it wasn’t for the cost of electricity vs gas, these boilers would be everywhere. They’re simple, cheap, don’t have to worry about explosive gases or venting off exhaust. Maybe with solar and batteries this might be a better solution than a heat pump… Of course a heat pump would be more efficient, but given an electric boiler is 1/10th the cost, better to put that extra in solar and batteries and offset your usage with cheap night time electricity.

Kind of makes a mockery of the CO2 debate doesn't it? If climate change was an actual issue then they would make gas the same price as electric & people would ditch all gas supply from their homes especially as electric is 100% efficient with regard to heating & yet they are burning gas to generate electricity.

An electric setup will not usually save money unless you have a PV and battery setup. One Litre of oil at say 60 pence per L gives 10KWh of heat. One kWh of electric gives 1 kWh of heat at say 40 pence. The oil setup will be say 90 % efficient where the electric is 100% efficient. The electric setup will cost significantly more to run. Time will tell.

hi buddy, just dropped on your video, i am at the point where my old gas boiler has pretty much died. The gas main is being renewed in the st. I am thinking about having it disconnected, save on a gas standing charge. To fit an electric boiler, but don't know much about these. Any thoughts??
@triax7006
@triax7006 8 ай бұрын
I am in the same position. Gas boiler finally packed up & thinking of an electric combi & as I only have 5 radiators & no need for a bath as a shower can be supplied via the combi with the option of an electric shower fitted as well it seems ditching gas would be apt. They do cost more to run, however no need for servicing as regards to the gas & if the gas was ditched saving on the standard charge as you also pointed out. The only downside would be no heat or hot water if there was a power cut, not been an issue but it is nice to have the alternative just in case but not a deal breaker.

@@grimawormtongue2014 hi, well long story really, they stopped replacing the gas main in the st and disappeared and not been back since. No information, typical shit utility company. Done a lot of research and a conversation with a trade friend. But the numbers just didn't stack up TBH. Boilers were around the same money but electric was 2 years warranty and the A rated gas boiler was 10 year warranty, so no brainer really. Had a whole system revamp in the end. Best move, lovely and warm and saving around £40 a month with the new gas system.

Itll be the same. A kw is a kw wherever it comes from. The difference is how its produced and at what cost. More interesting is why indirectly heat HW with electricity when directly heating the water has no loss across the boiler HEX and the HW coil. Im sorry to say not much thought has gone into this.
@migsteele
@migsteele 11 ай бұрын
@@tomplumb7754you can heat the hot water on night time electricity which is cheaper with certain tariffs. So having a heat only electric boiler will actually help as they will save on the hot water. I live in an electric only property and we use a heat battery, charged on cheap night time rates (I use octopus go) and we spend about £7-8 per month for all hot water. All direct electric. For heating we use air conditioning.
