No girl group brought the funk like En Vogue. Destiny’s Child was never funky and TLC had some funky tunes, but that type of R&B died at the end of the 90s along with almost all good music. There were a few decent songs in the early 2000s, but since then, it’s one assembly line piece of trash after another. Even pop singers can’t sing. Didn’t that used to be a prerequisite?

These lady groups of the nineties were groundbreaking in their open discussion about current event issues that we still battle to this day. Salt N Pepa had 'Let's Talk About Sex' and it was eye opening and brought the subject of sex to the forefront. En Vogue talking HARD about prejudice. Groups like this brought the talk to the table. We still have so much to learn and do.

My favorite part about the statement of the song is that they are an R&B/Hip-Hop band, but they went completely to rock for this song to show they aren't stuck in a stereotypical genre because they are a black woman group. Always loved En Vogue, super talented.

I think the issue was initially with management, which then lead to resentment between the two disagreeing parties.

Dawn Robinson has stated in numerous interviews that En Vogue's Management had EV's members sign a lengthy, convoluted contract in which it was buried in the fine print that the 4 (original) members would get $0.02 each per record. Keep in mind that Dawn, Maxine, Terry, and Cindy were ALL young at the time, all between age 20/21 (Dawn), and the others were likely around their mid-20s. Dawn has stated that none of them were aware of these royalty terms in the contract, and based on other remarks from her, my understanding is it seems like collusion between the Management and the label's Legal Representation, which is all too common in the music industry. Lastly, during that time in the 1990s, Terry dated music producer Denzil Foster, and I don't recall most of the details, but from that relationship, she was able to record and release a solo record in 1995. That, along with the financial manipulation of En Vogue's members, created turbulence and tension, and unfortunately, the group's original lineup was not sustainable. Dawn left in April 1997 and Maxine left in 2001.

I'm an old guy I've been listening to music for a very long time. My favorite genre is blues driven Rock but I do like all music. When this song came out I asked my friend who worked at a rock station in my area. Why don't you play this song or even Michael Jackson's Dirty Diana. They're both great rock songs. His answer was correct and it was it's the Public's perception of the artist is why we don't play those songs. Kind of sad isn't it. Great music not getting played. I was curious and went back and watched Moonwalker. When Dirty Diana started playing I was thinking to myself, "wow...why didn't THIS song hit bigger?" I think the 1st really popular girl group is The Andrews Sisters in the 1940s. They appeared in a lot of movies. En Vogue even did one of their songs called "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" on their debut album, except En Vogue's version is called "Hip Hop Bugle Boy". Another popular girl group is The Shirelles from the early 1960s. There were a little before The Supremes made it big. Also check out the female gospel groups The Caravans & The Clark Sisters.

I was a woman in my early adulthood when our fabulous greats like our Sisters' here hit the scene. I grew up in an environment where color wasn't even a thought. We all came together in dance, music, and in friendship on the dance floor, at people's homes, and Jammin in the car together. My friends came together in nothing short of friendship, love and respect. Back in the late 80's 90's I knew Cammie Herron the older sister of Cindy Heron a member of En Vogue. You can see the younger sister, Cindy do her line beginning @ about 2:53. Cammie was knock out dead gorgeous and a singer as well as an actress that I got to know with her work playing Billie Holiday in play at a community cultural center where I used to work. I was a visual art teacher who had her son in my elementary age art class in San Francisco. When En Vogue came to visit our community art center, I was so star struck that I almost fainted and could not speak. The members of En Vogue were just so beautiful in person! First of all, that first line in the song... I wrote a song about it, wanna hear it, here it go. That comes from the television show (In living color). Second, the phrase (Free your mind and your ass will follow) comes from a George Clinton and Funkadelic song.

This song blew everyone away from the get-go. EnVogue was badass. Guys used to just gape at the video screen in clubs and bars when this played. Another incredible song with amazing meaning is Colors by the Black Pumas. Different style, but one of my favorite songs.

I rememberred seeing a picture of En Vogue in their prime with a young Destiny Child when the original 4 DC girls were still pre teens. I think they met them during a song contest while touring & at the time, they were looking up to being the next En Vogue You should look at more videos of En Vogue like "Giving him something he can feel" , "Hold one to your love" or "Runnaway Love". They were one if not the best vocalist female group of all time.
