I was in high school when this song came out and it was such a breath of fresh air - we had had so much male-driven "sexy" rock, to have her say "I love myself and I want you to love me" and follow that up by unapologetically singing the title was such a female empowerment declaration in the landscape of music at that time. And, by your reactions, I can see that it remains as potent now as then. I respect this song so much because she is owning all of herself and doesn't have a moment to waste on shame. I recommend follow ups from Divinyls as "Science Fiction," "Pleasure and Pain," and "Boys in Town." RIP Chrissy Amphlett - lost and gone far too soon.

Chrissy Amphlett was a true tour de force of Aussie music, and is greatly missed. She sadly died of breast cancer 10 years ago, and was unable to get chemo therapy due to also suffering from MS. she and her husband, though, agreed this song should be used to raise awareness of breast cancer, and has been used to that end by the Breast Cancer Council, with all proceeds from the song going towards cancer research. So, despite Jay’s embarrassment, this song has most likely actually saved lives by being used to promote the early detection of breast cancer. While I Touch Myself is probably The Divinyls’ best known song, and was a worldwide hit, they do have even better ones. Boys In Town, Science Fiction, Pleasure and Pain, I’m Jealous, and Elsie are all amazingly great songs (Elsie best experienced with a live performance). I certainly hope you explore Chrissy and The Divinyls further, despite Jay’s blushes!

Great song and band.... Listen to Pleasure & Pain as well..... SO funny to watch your reactions.... Loved this song since its 80's release. A true hero in the Breast Cancer world Chrissy was such a great worldwide advocate...... My late wife (who also battled and lost to Breast cancer) was appreciative of Chrissy and many others that were staunch Breast Health advocates and how they reached out to women on behalf of the cause. Thanks guys....

I have watched so many of your reactions to songs(and movies), Jay's reaction may have made this my favorite to date! As some have mentioned, the subject of "touching ones self" has been done many times before this song. It's just that this one is so blunt about the subject that catches one off guard .. and I LOVE that. As said by others, Lauper's "She Bop" (probably the biggest hit on the subject), The Vapor's "Turning Japanese" are 2 songs... but how about Jackson Browne (yes that Jackson Browne) and his song "Rosie"! They are all ore disguised in the lyrics but still in the end .. THAT is the subject!
@veaton77 Жыл бұрын
Or they are just blatant about what they are talking about like The Radiators 'Gimme Head'. LOVE She Bop! Probably My fav Lauper song

Released in 1990, this is the most famous song from the classic Australian band, Divinyls. Some of their other great tunes from earlier in the 80s are *'Pleasure & Pain'* , the hard-hitting *'Boys In Town'* , and the quirky *'Science Fiction'* .

Chrissy Amphett came from an incredible family. Her aunt ('Little Patti' Amphett) was a rock star of the 60's in Oz. Whilst doing a USO gig in Vietnam came under fire at Long Tan, not many Rock Concerts come under mortar fire. In each generation those girls were at the top of the music business. Great film made about the Battle with cuts to the concert and the band being flown out as guns blazed - 'Danger Close:the Battle of Long Tan'.
