As much as I listen to ELO’s songs, I haven’t heard a single bad song from them yet, they have the impression that they don’t have any, a unique, original group, of which there are only a few in the music industry.

It is crazy they never hit number 1. ELO is one of my top five groups that I can listen to all day every day. Not a bad song on their albums. ELO, The Beatles, the Carpenters, BeeGees and Journey. Thinking about it I guess I would add ABBA and Home Free but I am trying to keep it short! And then there are solo artists! Thank goodness there is so much wonderful music out there for us to enjoy!

“Pop” is nothing to look down at. Jeff has proudly stated many times that he loves writing “pop songs.” If you want to something fun to listen to, try the long version of “Rollover Beethoven.” It from their rougher beginnings, was a minor hit in 1972, and is their live performance signature encore song. Jeff also played it as a Chuck Berry tribute (he wrote the song) during ELO’s Rock Hall Of Fame induction.

Sal, I would REALLY like to hear your reaction to ELO's "Believe Me Now/Steppin' Out" from their "Out of the Blue" album. A “deep dive” would be the album “Time” (1981)… but the WHOLE album as one listen. It’s a concept album beginning to end, and there was at least a couple singles off it, notably “Hold On Tight.” According to Wikipedia, this album has gained new life as a “retrofuturist” icon, with time-travel being the key subject. To belabor the point, this was “ahead of its time,” a little different than most ELO offerings, but a standout for certain. Check it out! PS: I use the intro to “Here Is The News” as my ringtone, which drives the family crazy.

Definitely agree that this should have been a US number 1 song, but when you consider when it was reaching it's peak it was competing with The Knack's 'My Sharona' which was the biggest song of the year, Chic's 'Good times' and Earth Wind & Fire's 'After the love has gone', you have to appreciate it did pretty good

I think I know why they never had a #1 hit. This was the '70s. A ton of great music was made concurrently. It's hard to compete in such a crowded field. As many have said, there were no clunkers from them. But when you are going up against the likes of Chicago, ABBA, The BeeGees, Boston, and too many others I can't think of at this moment.
