I would definitely go with "Sweet Talkin' Woman" for your next ELO song. If you want an upbeat ELO song that's well-known and isn't disco, it about has to be either that or "Do Ya". "Can't Get It Out of My Head" and "Strange Magic" are good songs, but they're slower.

This was basically a solo song for Jeff Lynne. He plays most of the instruments, vocals, etc. Done after most of the band had gone home. Rest of the band wasn’t too thrilled, but went with it.

This was one of the most played songs in 1979. To say it was everywhere and played constantly all day is likely an uderstatement. I always felt that it was designed for roller skating which was HUGE at the time. The first ELO song I purchased was "Showdown" as a 45 rpm. The tone of that song is pure angst in the best way possible. I still love hearing it today. My favorite song of theirs is "All Over the World". It's a feel-good pop anthem that withstands the test of time.

Jeff Lynne, singer and leader of ELO, worked in the studio with the Beatles on their White Album and Abbey Road, and became good friends with the Beatles' lead guitarist George Harrison. Lynne formed ELO partly to project what the Beatles sound would have sounded like if the Beatles still existed in the 70s with the stringed instruments and all. Lynne and Harrison later teamed up to form the Traveling Wilburys in the 80s with Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, and Bob Dylan. So YES! There is a Beatles connection with ELO.

Jeff wrote this song by himself in about 1/2 hour. The guys were at the end of recording the "Discovery" album, but Jeff thought that they needed a harder driving song to round it out. So he sent everyone out to play football (soccer) to give them a break and by the time they got back, he had written the song and played most of the instrumental parts by himself. All that was left was to add Bev on the drums and Richard added more piano and synth, and of course, the background vocals. Jeff never imagined that it would be one of their biggest hits! It was, I believe, the first song they recorded without any strings at all.

Andy, you were on the right track when you said this song was made for moving - this was tremendously popular at the skating rink! 🛼🛼 When you’re grooving to this, those extra verses don’t matter. Jeff Lynne just can´t be pigeon-holed. He has lots of styles, even his new stuff is wide-ranging. He is a musical genius. Summer and Lightning, Midnight Blue, Across the Border, Wild West Hero, Last Train to London, Jungle, Rockería and Calling America should be a short playlist and then ask yourself, "What style CAN'T he do?" Not all of those songs got famous but they cover a broad horizon of music.

I knew you'd love this one, try Boy Blue or Laredo Tornado. For that matter, do the whole LP 'Eldorado', their only concept album. ELO were Beatlesque. They had a cellist and violinist (sometimes 2) when I saw them live back when they were touring their 1st LP, so they always had a bit of an orchestral approach. Jeff Lynne and George Harrison were later bandmates along with Dylan, Roy Orbison, and Tom Petty in The Traveling Wilburys.

If you ever consider a full-album review, ELO’s “Time” is worth considering, from 1981. A concept album start to finish (a guy caught in the future lamenting the “good old 1980s”), every song stands on its own. “Hold On Tight” was the main single.

Yes!!...GUYS! You MUST MUST MUST..Check out ALL OVER THE WORLD. The song was used in the film Xanadu. I'd say half of the OST was ELO songs. The song Xa nadu was originally sung by Jeff, but felt Olivia Newton John would sound better singing it. Plus it fits during the end scene.

I love everything about this song... it's wonderful and not long enough for me... The thing is, too, that all this music was the soundtrack of our lives, those of us who lived through it and it has an emotional pull. My friends and I as teenagers didn't analise the music, we just felt it.

Discovery was one of my favorite albums as a kid. So many good tracks. Last Train To London is another great song that doesn’t get enough attention. When you have the time, I’d recommend listening to the whole album.

I was 11 when this came out. "Discovery" was the first album I ever loved. Prior to this I was a song here and there kid. But got this album as a gift and loved it from start to finish. DBMD was the original draw, but now I consider it the weakest track on the album. If you want to experience some Jeff Lynne brilliance, do "The Diary Of Horace Wimp" from this album.

I have a similar feeling about this album. I was 8 in 1979 and I loved the song Last Train to London from the radio, but I didn’t know what it was called or the band’s name. My sweet mom took me to the record store and bravely did the woo woo woo siren sound effect for the clerk. Bless his heart, he figured out the song we wanted and sold us the Discovery album on eight track. I knew every song on it by heart.
