Nice but Very complex.. why the 90 degree angel? if you can simply it and have power output rage between 40 and 110 hp and variable propeller would better. Such unit would be really nice to replace old engines

These would be OK with a diesel powered generator to run them. I used to captain a diesel electric tow boat and it was a good system.

@Jim Lake with the proper solar setup to go with this system you would only need a generator if you night sail or have bad storms for a few days but even if you only ran a generator you would use way less feul compared to a conventional engine

@Jim Lake Diesel electric propulsion has been a standard aboard modern vessels at least the last decade. No complexity would be introduced if there is not a reduction of cost in another area. And this pod design is not uncommon aboard larger vessels. Aboard a sailboat you could have a 10kW sail drive motor, 10kWh battery and a 4kW generator plus 1kW solar, you would not get 24h 100% usage of the motor but it could help you out of a pinch.
