A long ways from when you guys first got the boat. I remember seeing the keel sway when you had trailered it after purchase. I thought these guys are in over their heads. It is such a beautiful boat now. I am carpenter from Canada and just thoroughly impressed with Dan's prowess. Few people can be a good builder, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fiberglass etc.. thanks for your content guys keep going.

Kika and Dan, I came across your channel...well, more like stumbled upon it while watching surf videos, which morphed into dive videos...to sailing and adventure videos...to Uma. I was immediately transfixed. Aside from the fantasy I have always had about "selling it all" and living off the grid, there is something so absolutely beautiful about YOUR partnership with each other. I binged a dozen Steps, joined the Uma Nation and have been vicariously living through your eyes. I am beyond the least handy person on the planet, but you make me want to build or fix something :). Love to connect one day. Until then, keep doing what you do.

Most impressive part of this video is her painting the engine room floor. An area that is out of sight , no one will ever see . But paint it she did because it's the right way to do things and they both take pride . It's nice to see people who wont settle for "ehh , good enough"

Of all the sailing/refitting/adventure KZbin channels, and there are a lot, your channel is the best. By far. I have great respect for Dan's mechanical abilities, planning, thinking/thought process AND of course his wife's courage to help with anything and everything. It's been said that beside every great man is a great woman. Actually the quote is "behind every great man..." but in this case there was a need to change behind to beside. Definitely beside, as she's not just a sidekick, she's 50/50 as I see it.

what a waste of time all that effort and one careless mishap with a reef and the boat is on the bottom If it were an outboard, it would be an easy and cheap installation, and they kick up when they hit something. All you do is mess up the propeller not sink the boat. Dont they have powerful electric outboards?

@@rogerd4559 When the reef magically sneaks past the enormousness keel, the last of their worries will be the tiny, head sized hole for the inboard electric motor. Their new concern will be that the normal laws of physics no longer exist. They have very good setup.

Yes, we’ve looked into them, but the still require “fuel” usually methanol of some sort to work and are about 2-3 times less efficient than a gas genset. If/when they come up with a system we can run sea water though, add a little electricity, and hydrogen comes out and can be stored, THEN we’ll look into it seriously.

And is there an alternator built in, or will you be adding something else? I'd love it if you could chalkboard up how the electronics work. Also, will you be filling in the holes from the shaft and (bracket) and flashing up in the inside as well, or do you only have a thin veil over those spots? And will there be a bottom cover over the remaining skeg hole? I love you guys and all your videos, Uma has come so far, she is so very beautiful and efficient. A motor is an generator, if the energy flows in the opposite direction. If the motor is an AC motor, you just need a switch mode power supply (SM PSU) that can work from DC to max frequency. After the SM PSU come the battery charging circuit. There are also some switching circuitry that make everything work together.

Do they work well on fiberglass surfaces? I thought washers like that are more suited for harder surfaces like metal?
@tchiwam
@tchiwam 4 жыл бұрын
@@propbraker They do better than the normal Lock washers, I would always put a washer between the lock and the fibreglass. In a pinch I'd use the nordlock on fiberglass. I would probably not use the normal spring lock directly on fiber glass, I'd go for liquid lock or Nylocks or bar nut if really stuck and check the torque a couple of times. I use washer with the sharp edge on the surface. I used these a lot on diesel manifolds, snowmobiles, cars, antenna masts etc etc..

I don't remember all of the details, but AVE did a show on lock washers, starting with a presentation from NASA. The split ring ones are worthless (literally no benefit), but I think the Nord Lock ones were good. FWW, teflon tape also lets you get a snugger/more secure fit, and prevents galling on stainless. Thank NASA for the teflon tape too!

The Saildrive is a very neat and tidy solution, for certain. I love it and I really think that this is the way to go for propulsion. Replacing the big, dirty and noisy diesel with a quiet, small, clean electric motor seems like a complete no-brainer. The only issue that I run into in this scenario is the cost. These drives are really, really pricey. Being a sailor that is forced to work on a very small budget, I'm always shocked when I look up the cost of these systems. I was looking into electric outboards, recently, since my largest boat is a 22 footer and I was very disappointed to find that they are several times more expensive (not including batteries) than a similar 2 or 4 stroke gas outboard. Why are they SO freakin' expensive! Keep up the very good videos!
@SailingUma
@SailingUma 4 жыл бұрын
It doesn’t have to be pricey... Our first motor we built was $100 from a forklift motor that we found on eBay. We had that with the shaft drive for 5 years before we did this upgrade. If you ant more info, We have a page called electrobeke about our first system on our website sailinguma.com feel free to check it out :)

@@SailingUma, I did check out your videos of the fork lift motor install. I really like that setup quite a lot. Maybe I can experiment with converting a gasoline outboard into an electric outboard, in same spirit as your earlier conversion. Hmmm..., It might be time to hit craigslist fr a used outboard. :-)

The old prop turning pink is due to de-zincification of the bronze. You had some electrolysis going on -perhaps the anodes were not making good electrical contact to the prop? It might be a good idea to paint the prop etc. to minimise electrolysis and this will be even more important with an aluminium leg. Also, you should not use red loctite on bolts unless you never want to remove them -blue loctite would be more suitable on the leg bolts I think. Finally isn't there a rubber gasket around the leg level with the hull (keeps the wee beastys out)? Looking forward to hearing how much power this system generates at hull speed!

I’m wondering why the external recess around the sail drive is so large. Why isn’t the sail drive skeg glassed right into the hull? (That recess seems like it would cause drag and be home for a lot of growth.)
@nachopascual96
@nachopascual96 4 жыл бұрын
Because it can pivot. When they're under sail, the whole unit turns 180° and points forwards, which makes the prop spin and which generates power for them to recharge their batteries

Maybe also related to the need to have a flat flange inside to mount the motor on vs the curve of the hull.
@joshuarosen6242
@joshuarosen6242 4 жыл бұрын
@@nachopascual96 Are you sure about that? I thought that it changed from propulsion to generation by changing the pitch of the propeller vanes. I've looked at the OceanVolt SailDrive web page and I didn't see any reference to the unit rotating and that seems like an unnecessary complexity bearing in mind that the vanes can rotate more than 180°.

Just a quick note. While you have the boat on the hard--a pair of eye bolts fitted to the aft end of the keel and the rudder skeg forward side allows a wire to be run between them as required, keeping nets, ropes and logs from fouling the sail drive or its propeller. Some areas are filled with these hazards.
